Money Making...How do you all do it?Follow

#1 Jan 28 2004 at 10:32 PM Rating: Decent
I'm just wondering how all of you personally make yourselves the money you need for gear and spells... and share how you do it, and how well your doing with the method you use.

Right now, I'm raising my fishing and cooking skills (lvl 9 fishing and lvl 14 cooking atm) in hopes that I'll make some money later on. Other than that I'm waiting for my stuff to sell cuz I'm broke!

So yeah whats your method?

Well, personally, I grew up near a area where money wasn't a problem. San d'Oria.

Ghelsba Outpost/Fort + King Ranperre's Tomb = Money zones.

Go to Ghelsba Outpost, pull ONE orc from the very top, run all the way to the bottom, and kill them all. I get a lot of gil that way.

Go to King Ranperre's Tomb, kill every bat you see, get tons of stacks of bat wings, and turn them in to that guy at North San d'Oria for 200 for every 2.

Easy money.

Also, bring Thief's keys and open chests in Ghelsba, they usually have a lot of gil in them. Or good items.

FFXI Money making overview. "We make Gil the old fashioned way. We mint it!"

FFXI has a great in game economy. The economy means you are always making trade offs and struggling to buy the next peice of gear. If you focus purely on leveling, your gear will fall behind really fast.

This leads to the need to make money in the game. Don't waste money buying guides online. Everything you need to know is freely available, in English, on the web already.

First I will go over the basics. Then, I will talk about the specifics of a few methods of making gil.

***** The Basics *****

Nothing in this section will make you super rich, but it can help you earn a few extra gil when you need to get that next peice of gear.

Frame of Mind
You need to forget about leveling to make serious money. Getting massive XP and making gil are pretty much mutually exclusive. There is more to the game than getting to level 70. Your groups will love you if you have the best gear for your level and all the spells you need. They will love you even more if you have a steady supply of food to make you more effective. So lets get out there and concentrate as hard on making gil as you do on making XP.

The Action House (AH)
The most basic of the basics is learn to use the AH. Sell everything you can on the AH. Save anything that stacks till you have 12 and then sell the stack. This will save you AH slots. Remember that things can take a while to sell since you are selling to other players. If you want to sell fast, lower your price. Most things with a reasonable price will sell within 24 hours.

Bazaar
You can set up a bazaar on your character to sell things. If you run out of space in the action house, or have a stack of 11 you need to sell, this can be great. Remember that the price you set is per item. You may have to find a place to sit and wait for your stuff to sell. Don't do it to close to the AH, or your character will never even appear on anyones screen. I like to setup on a busy path in town that is on the way to the AH from the mog house.

Solo
If you want to make XP, join a party. If you want to make gil, solo. Also, if you are trying to make Gil, stick with the easiest mobs that drop anything you want. You can breeze through them and still get crystals. Some classes quickly get to a point where even easy monsters are time consuming. You need to just stick with the things you can kill quick and forget the crystals. Or, level up another job. One that can use the gear you already have is great, since you won't need to spend money equiping that job and use up mog house space.

Crystals
Always have signet cast on you. Crystals are a great source of income. Even when you are busy powering through the levels, crystals add up to a steady stream of gil. You can get even smarter about it, trying to target creatures that drop the crystals that sell the best. Skip bunnies, go for orcs, goblins, bats and birds.

Turning conquest points into cash
Think hard before you do this. You may want to save those bad boys up. There is some sweet equipment you can get. If you are desperate for cash though, just figure out what you can get with conquest points that fetches the most cash. Buy it with conquest points and sell it at the AH.

Quests
There are lots of easy quests that net sellable items or gil. Missions are good for this too. The repeatable quests generally aren't worth the effort, IMHO. If you have not done the Drain scroll quest, you can make 18K one time on it. If you play a BLM or plan on DRK you can SAVE 18K by doing the quest.

***** Specific Methods *****

So, you have done the basics, and now you are ready to ramp up your Gil making to the next level. Here are some techniques that are a little trickier, but pay bigger returns.

Playing the AH
Every city has it's own AH. So if I put something on sale in San d'Oria, you won't see it in Bastok. You can use this to your advantage. Either get to level 20 and get a Chocobo lisc. or pay the extra $1/mo. for a character in another city. Now, you need to identify things in the action house that have a price difference. You will see a lot more Justice Medals in San d'Oria than in Bastok. You might pick up a couple for 1000gil (if you are lucky, this is just an example) and sell them for 1500. There are two things to consider. Profit margin, and turnover. You can probably only sell a few Justice medals a day. Not a bad way to make a thousand gil or so, but be aware it can be slow at times. You will have to investigate what items you can buy low and sell high.

Playing the conquest
Whatever nation is ahead will have things it can buy in it's shops no one else can. For example, you can buy and sell about 3 copies of Cure II in Sandy when it's ahead and sell it in Bastok when it is last. You can make from 300-500 gil profit per item. If you try this on Titan, beware, I will flood the market with cheap ones to drive you out! =)

Farming for real
If you are serious about farming, the best low level thing to farm is crawler silk. Get your thief to 15 and log on during off peak hours. You can do this with other classes, but treasure hunter is a real boon. A 30RNG/15TFH is a farming machine.

Camping Notorious Monsters
Once again, having your TFH level to 15 will make a giant difference. Logging on during off peak hours will as well. Look up some NM in Allakhazam's beastiary and go hunt them. That RNG30/TFH15 or higher is a killer combo for this. Huntin NM is not an exact science and is pretty time consuming. But the payoffs can be big as well.

Crafting
Any of the craft skills can be big money makers. But they take a lot of time and money to develop. There are some good guides out there. Take the time to look one up and figure out a plan. Shoot for something players need a lot of and buy over and over. Mithkabobs are a little overdone, but all the juices for mages are pricy enough at the AH that most mages skip them. Try making a batch of juice, set your bazaar price at about a 10% profit and go party. Tell the mages in your group you have juice for sale, and you will probably be able to sell more than you care to carry. Better yet, carry the items to make the juice, and make some during the down time in the PT whenever you sell out.

Cooking
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24&mid=1073009948558277475&page=1 is the thread to end all cooking threads. How to get to a cooking level of 40 in a few days with as little lost gil as possible.

Gardening
You need to visit your mog house about 2 times an earth day to do this really well. A "mule" might be a good plan. If you can log in once in the AM before work, and right before you log onto your main in the evening, gardening can be great. You need about 20K to start a real green house. Buy 10 pots, 10 bags of seeds, and 10 crystals. You can find places online to help you tip the odds in your favor that you grow good stuff. Pikko has a great gardening log on Allakhazam.

Fishing
Fishing is a little different than the other craft skills, and I have some personal experience with it. It can be a real money maker on some days, and useless others. To get your skill up, fish with the yew or bamboo rods and little worms in fresh water. The river in East Ron. or the pools in Windurst are good. Expect to break some rods as you skill up. More expensive rods break less, but I think you get fewer skill ups with them. Never fish on firesday. Rods will break like crazy. Fish bite well on lighteningday and poorly on earthday. I haven't gathered enough data on the other days. Once you get your skill to 5 or so, a carbon rod with insect paste will do pretty well on moat carp in San d'Oria. They sell for 300 ea. at the AH. And they sell fast!

***** Conclusion *****

This guide is just the ways I have personally found to make money. As with real life you can't get something for nothing. You have to put some effort, gil, or just plain hours into it to make money. Planning ahead a little and having a goal can really help you out.

Be well and be Wealthy

good guide sainD.

i am ready for the advanced guide, but with starting from lvl 1 i think i will have to get some ls support to get me started. ill get money from gardening the most at first, repay debts to ls and then level up fishing/woodworking. i have considered making a mule for the whole ah thing. i might have to lookup which items have the best margin.

one more questions, why exactly are moat carp so wanted? is it because of lu shang rod quest? or something else?(cooking?)

As a thief, i have always focused mostly on leveling. My gear has never been behind. Advice to thieves : know what to steal. Fighting some orcs can get you 50 gil per pop. Stealing silver beastcoins, a stack sells from 4k-6k. Fish scales are also good, a stack of rock salt sells for 1.5k in Jueno. I rarely ever farm, so I am not rich. But I always have the money for the equipment I need. I am constantly in the 10k-20k range.
