Chocobo Quest (Rant)Follow

Ok, I'm just in the process of doing the Chocobo quest. I made the Jeuno run, got lucky and didn't get aggroed.
Got the greens - cost me 4k but hey, I'm really looking forward to getting me a Choco, so it's worth the outlay. I'm so sick of running everywhere!

However, one thing I overlooked - the time it takes to feed the bird. Is it really necessary to have such an infuriating time sink? One grass per FF day - thats one each real time hour. You have to feed him 4 grasses - add two 'rejections' and you're looking at over 5 hours of trading an item to a Chocobo in order to obtain the license.

Now, before anyone says it, I KNOW in the end, I'm gonna be glad I got my lil Chocco. I KNOW timesinks are a regular part of mmorpg's. But is it really necessary to have to endure such a mundane, repetetive, tiresome task? Look at the subjob quest. Collect tree items from monsters. Another timesink, but at LEAST you were gaining exp and items/gil while doing it.

So, what do you guys think? That this is simply a coming of age task one must endure to prove yourself to the world of Vana'diel? Or are you like me, and think this is the worst designed p.o.s. quest ever endured by Elvaankind?

Well I do agree with you about this quest being a time sink. I made the best of it, doing a fun adventure of going out to qufim.

At lvl 20 finding a party out there is fairly easy. I would group fight worms and clippers till 1800 when wrights come out, which most parties hide at enterence till 0400. This give you a perfect chance to go back to upper jueno give the bird his silly grass and return.

I hope that helps you with the bird...You will also encounter a time sink with camping NM's. The one I am waiting on spawns about 3 rl hours apart and may not drop the item I need everytime.

You do know you do not have to sit there and wait..you can go out into Qufim and get a group and lvl for a while. Nor do you have to turn them in each day. You can feed him once every vana day but you could also log out and log back in 2 earth days later and give him the next grass. Just have to feed 6 total times and only one a day. Hopefully this will make it a little more bearable.

A lot of the things that people complain about most in Final Fantasy seem to actually be designed to encourage players to do more stuff *besides* xp grinds. My guess is that they didn't want people to view the feedings as a single step to be done all at once. They probably wanted people to explore Jeuno and do other quests, or work on fishing/crafting/gardening, or poke around Quifim for some hunting. I think they were going for "Oh hey - that'll give me a chance to feed the sick chocobo while I'm there." Instead of, "Hmm. What am I going to do before this *$*&$@ chocobo will eat again?"

Many of us from an EQ background, I think, have a bad habit we need to break. EQ's quests were SO buggy, cryptic, uninteresting, inconsistant, and frustrating that we all got in the habit of looking up quests on sites like Allakhazam's and rushing through them like a recipe. In EQ, you more or less *had* to. But in Final Fantasy, the quests are comprehensible and immersive and fun and *rewarding*. For my part, I have to keep reminding myself that quests in this game are something to be enjoyed rather than something work that needs to be done.

Valinos is correct, the days do not have to be consecutive, nor do you have to remain logged in. You will only have the option to feed him once per Vana'diel day, but you don't necessarily have to feed him every day. He'll love you just the same as long as he gets his greens.

I used my choco quest time to catch up on some One Piece. I feed the choco, log out and watch a couple of episodes, then log back in and feed it again. Rinse and repeat until I had my chocobo license and a few more episodes caught up. My anime collection has gotten lonely since I started playing.

Well, I got my Chocobo!

And although he is great, and the trip back from Jeuno was a pleasure, I still maintain the quest itself just seemed tacked together by a lazy dev on his lunch break. With issues.

Ah well, it's done now. How DID I manage without one???

Kweh!

Consider this your graduation into your non-noob days ;)

And its really a beeyotch without one.

im with bayler...can't believe some ranted about this quest. guess it's one of those 'i didn't start the game with a chocobo so it sucks automatically'

anyway like the others said, you are not required to leave your PC on or be logged in for 6 hrs. it just needs to be fed on 6 different days and does'nt even have to be consecutive.

while you're there in jeuno, go to qufim and level up. you might be 21 or 22 by the time you finish the choco quest, assuming you leave a group every 1.5-2 hrs . b/c where you gonna go anyway? so dont need a chocobo just yet...keep on levelling up while youre there..explore the town...explore the nearby zones, just dont die.

I just have a side rant to add.

Though i know games like this arent designed to be done quickly by any means. But upon realizing i had to find something to do for 3 hours while the guy made the katana for SAM quest i was quite frustrated.
One, Norg isnt exactly the easiest for a non mage to enter, (thus having to buy silent oils).
So two, i obviously waste a lot of time trying to swith to drg(my current job im leveling) heading to valkurm, finding a pt and trying to do something while knowing I just want to level SAM for subjob.

I know this game isnt all about leveling, but for now i have a few level goals i want to get to so i can farm in peace and without having to worry about getting dominated by half the world. I know you can fish in norg, but I have tried it for awhile(only gotten level 1 fisher) and found it to be extremely boring and mundane. So after logging on at almost 9 and doing this I found it frustrating that the earliest i could use SAM would be an extreme time like 12:30 or 1 (i am in high school). I work the next day so i still cant use SAM until late thurs for only a couple early levels.

I just wish somethings could be quicker, i mean i wouldnt mind waiting an hour or so but, three hours is a fairly big chunk of time for me.

Whats funny is that gaussbit grass is quite easy to obtain, I got it from wadi hares just outside of bastok in no more than 20 minutes.

I could make some cash off selling them lol.

The SAM quest thing is just to tempt you. What they really want you to do is get impatient, run into the Grotto, and get killed. I guess part of being a Samurai is to have alot of patience 8)

What did I do for those three hours? I..

1. Ate dinner
2. Took a shower
3. Went food shopping
4. Watched some anime
5. Chatted with my LS

That three hours took forever.

The chocobo thing by comparison is pretty tame. When I did it, I took the time to explore Jeuno, pick up some quests, poke my head into Qufim, and pick up my jaw from the ground seeing all the JPN'ers running around in AF gear, and the crazy stuff at the AH.

The most infuriating quest would be the summoner quest. The hard part isnt getting the ruby. Its getting those damned weather effects. Try going through ranguemont pass without a map(very hard to get) only to be killed by an Evil Eye once your sneak runs out unexpectedly. Square made them so hard because by then most of the Japanese had high levels, and could get help. I crafted while waiting for the chocobo to eat his McGrass Quarter Pounder. Also everyoen should consider fishing. Its great really. I sat in Rabao waiting for a PT and fished 3 stacks of moat carps. Thats about 12k. Carbon Rod + Insect Paste = Moat Carp.

What I did, after knowing my friends actually sat there for 6 hours, is this:

I hit 20 in Qufim around 11pm EST one night.. So I left my group before I fell asleep and started my chocobo quest.

I fed it once, then logged off.. and in the morning I thought of something to make it go a little more quickly.

I signed in right before the Vana'diel day changed. I'd already had one failed attempt at the Chocobo, and my second one occured at approximately 23:00 ingame time.

I waited a few minutes and once the day changed, I fed my first Gausebit Grass to the chocobo.

I logged and later checked back around lunch, again getting there BEFORE the vana'diel day ended. 2nd grass eaten. Waited a few minutes, and when the day changed, fed it again. 3rd down, one to go.

Later that night when I wanted to play for a while, I fed it once, rented my chocobo, and ran back home to Bastok. Wee :0) But I still know people who insist on sitting there for 6 hours straight.. but at least if they really WANT to sit there and craft or whatever, this shaves off at least an hour of real time... by doing it the first or last time you attempt it... ^_^ Happy riding!

Only one game day has to expire per piece of grass.

so if you fed it at 21:00 you could then feed it straight away at 00:00 so thats the two failed attempts out the way already, your then set to get the rest fed in a few hours.

Just making sure...

Again...I allways heard that you have to feed the bird for 5 hours consecutivly, this is not true from what i've just read?

So, I can try to feed bird then log/PT, the next real day I log on try agian to feed bird then log/PT, then next real day feed feed bird...rinse and repeat..

NOT CONSECUTIVELY!! Just have to feed bird 6 times..thats it

Thanks again gang.....

That's correct. The quest can be done over the span of any amount of time, ranging from 4 hours to an infinite amount of time passage. It's not like the Chocobo wil keel over if you don't feed it religiously.

My husband and I did our quest over a movie and an argument.

Rather funny, in the middle of the argument, we both stop, look at the time, and go in to feed the chocobo, then go right back at it. ;)

Seriously though, I like the fact that this game doesn't just rush you through things. I like the fact that for some quests, you need to have "non-battle" interaction with other people or NPC's. Cut-scenes are the greatest!

Right now, we're doing the Taru card quest in Jeuno, in that, unless you want to BUY all the cards, you have to run around trying to find real players to trade cards with. 'Twas fun. (I think Kishan got our last card last night..)

It's how I learned that when you see someone with an item in their bazaar set for 99,999,999 gil, it means they want to trade it, or they're showing it off. :)

Though - would you be upset if you were showing something off, and someone actually BOUGHT it from you? You lose your cool show-off-item, but you gain 99,999,999 gil.... decisions, decisions?

Looking back, I'm man enough to agree. I probably should have prepared something to do inbetween feeding times. But I was too afraid to try partying in case I died and lost my level. And was also worried nobody would then want to party with a lv19...well, I guess I was just worrying about stuff too much. I sooo wanted my Chocco! I've not taken up a tradeskill yet either, so I couldn't busy myself with that.

And for the guy who said "guess it's one of those 'i didn't start the game with a chocobo so it sucks automatically' "

Yep, you got me there. That's exactly what I meant to say. I'm cancelling my account and deleting the game.

Not really. Smiley: grin

Grats on your chocobo :). The worst quest ever is lvl50 break. That lich item just blows... Trust me it's much worse than a chocobo quest.

I am willing to wait twice as long to acquire Lv50 cap items without fighting Lich and Exoray... Lich and Exoray are both pain in the butt...
