Ranger? grrrFollow

#1 Jan 27 2004 at 2:13 PM Rating: Default
I just did the ranger flag quest to try it out, and I have to say I'm quite a bit dissapointed :( but I'm not posting this to ***** about the job. There are 2 things however that I find completely absurd, and I hope I'm just missing something...

1) I've been attacking with "/ra <t>", but the bow won't stay out. Is the only way to attack by mashing the macro key throughout the whole fight?

2) I tried to do a weapon skill with the bow, but it said that I need to be in battle. Is the only way to to a ranged WS by pulling out your melee weapon first?

There are a few things I like about ranger, and would like to see how it turns out around lvl 30ish, but the above is the deal breaker for me :/

1) yup, as far as I know there's no auto attack with bow. The best you could probably do is set up a macro alternating /shoot <t> and /wait ## (##=apx reload on the weapon) but even so you'd still have to hit that once it fires all the shots. All I can really say is you get used to it. You could always use a bow with longer reload so you didn't have to do it as often as well.

2) Yes you need to be in battle mode to use the weapon skills. You'll probably get used to this too. The good news is you do not need to be in battle mode for the 2 hour - Eagle Eye Shot. So if you wind up needing it unexpectedly you don't have to wait to pull out your melee weapon.

1.) Ctrl + D works too. Why it's "D" I have no idea. Maybe range"D" attack?

Hello,

There is some light at the end (midway) of the tunnel.

Like the others above me have already said, Control D and being in attack mode to do your weapon skill is something you get used to very fast.

Just some pointers that will hopefully be helpful:

Get in the habit of always being in attack mode once the mob is in camp unless you are the puller. Actually after you get used to all the delay time/timing you can figure out your own groove, but one thing to keep in mind is:

You can Control-A and then wait a split second then Control-D.

Basically what this does is that you pull your dagger out and then instead of the delay you usually have after auto-attack, you in essense use that delay as your delay time you'd normally have for your ranged attack. Takes some work to get used to, but after a while it becomes second nature.

Wide-scan is a god-send to pulling. The trick is to start searching for the next monster while you're still fighting the first one. What I usually do is Control-D to activate bow, and then hit my /map hotkey and wide scan and quickly scroll down to the closest VT/IT (that preferably have no other red dots in my way of getting to it), hit enter twice, and I should go back to the normal screen just in time before my arrow even shoots. This way, you already have XP Chain #1 on your tracking radar while you are still killing the first mob. I usually disengage when the mob is at about 20% life (same concept, Control D, then Control A, so that the delay it takes me to disengage I fire off another arrow) and then go pull the 2nd one. I leave even faster (group ability permitting) if I'm in between XP Chain 4, 5, 6, etc in an effort to maximize xp (my group isn't all that content if we don't see 240xp at least once a cycle).

If you haven't caught what I'm trying to say is: being a ranger (well, this can also apply to a lot of other classes) heavily deals with being able to "multi-task" in-game. You must be able to do many things at once (I am assuming you, Sir Ranger, are designated puller at all times for your group) while at the same time make sure your group is taking the heat just fine.

----

Some other notes... sorry for rambling but I'm hoping this helps.

You get used to Control-D (ranged attack) at maximum range very fast. This is because you simply can't take hits very well. In fact, if you don't have at least up-to-date armor I don't think you can tank anymore than that Taru Black Mage next to you can.

This is a good habit but a problem for weapon skills. Why? If you've read other threads about Rangers you are probably well aware that our weapon skills don't have the same range as our normal ranged attacks (even though it IS a ranged weapon weapon skill... hmm, very interesting is it not?). Well, for some strange reason sometimes when you're out of range your TP goes bye bye anyway. Well, doesn't that suck.

Well it sucks more. Flaming Arrow and Piercing Arrow both have pretty crappy to-hit rates compared to normal weapon skills. Then again, your bow itself has pretty crappy to-hit rates. That is, until you are 14 and get your Ranger Necklace on and then all the other goodies as you get higher.

Nothing is more important to you than Ranged Accuracy and Agility. It doesn't matter if something gives minus dexterity and plus agility. Use it. If you're going to pay money into arrows, make sure you're using the best possible equipment and bow to go with it. With that, my recommendations are (starting from 7, before then you really are more efficient just soloing like crazy with a meat mithka-bob. You should be able to go from 1-7 in 1-2 kabob's worth of time.

7 - That one bow with like 17 attack 540 delay or something. Not self bow.
10 - Royal Archer Longbow
12 - Hunter's Longbow
16 - Power Bow+1

If you can't afford/find Power Bow+1 for sale, don't buy Power Bow and just stick with Hunter's Longbow for the ranged bonus. Once you get to Power Bow+1 you're good to go for a while.

Hey, I babbled a lot. But I'm at work and bored and so finally cracked down and registered for an Allakhazam account and this is my first post so I typed a ton I guess. Hope this helps. I apologize ahead of time if all this is info you already know/useless/plainly wrong and stuff but it's just my very limited experience from playing a ranger and would like to share and help.

~Nall

Note: If you see me on Titan and not in a town, I can not teleport nor can I raise. If you see me casting those spells it's because your graphics card/computer has some major problems and I'd suggest you change it instead.

The Damage is worth the wait just always pull with the Bow and get a AXE to fight with as well. I always hit ctrl+a then just keep hitting ctrl+d while fighting most mobs dont last long. I still hate missing a weapon skill ;p

I'd suggest a beestinger at lvl 7. It gives the AGI bonus a ranger needs. Additionally...very nice post NallonTitan. One thing I've noticed though...with inexperienced ranger pullers, is that when they disengage, fire off one last arrow, and leave for the next mob...they've pulled aggro and the rest of the PT is chasing after you. Just something to be mindful of.
