Great Sword or Scythe?Follow

#1 Jan 27 2004 at 11:31 AM Rating: Decent
I have just recently attained the adv. job of DRK. This is my 1st melee job and I am torn between using Great Swords or Scythes. The GS has a lower attack but a lower delay time. The Scythe has a higher attack but a higher delay time. To me it seems that they are just about equal because of this but I really do not know since I am not experienced with these weapons yet. If you have any suggestions or comments on this matter please post. Thank You!

I guess Scythe is better, but greatsword looks cooler ;)

I'd level up GSD/GAX/SCY. That way when you get to a party, you have alot of flexibility when it comes to WS and chains.

Most go with scythe because of the ws guillotine(?) attained at level 60(?)

Anything other than scythe and you'll be lowering your attack rating significantly due to a lower overall rating with the other weapons.

Warrior = Axe / Great Axe
Thief = Dagger
Paladin = Sword
Dragoon = Spear
Samurai = Great Katana
Dark Knight = Scythe

Sorry, it's kind of the way the game was designed... you wont notice it at low levels but before too long your great sword will start capping out 12-15 points below your scythe.

Great Sword right now is just a good weapon for nobody, no job has an A+ rating in it. It's fun and it's helpful for Paladins who need to solo and farm gil, thats about it.

Well, my only thought on this now is the delay time factor. If i can pull off more hits with a GS that is only a little lower in attack than my Scythe, won't that make them almost even? I understand I can do more damage with a Scythe but I won't be able to pull off as many hits as I would with a GS. for example: I attack a mob for 1 min. In that one minute I hit the mob with my Scythe 5 times for 50 points of dmg each hit. Now I attack a mob with my GS 6 times in 1 minute for 40 points of dmg each hit. After that 1 min I have dealt 250 points w/ the Scythe and 240 points w/ my GS. Thats why it seems to me they might not be unequal as everyone says. I know the example isn't accurate but you understand what I'm trying to say. Once again this is just a thought I have because I'm not experienced that much with these weapons. Any input on this is welcome. Thnaks!

I'm not talking about speed, your actual skillcap will be LOWER with any weapon other than scythe as a dark knight.

By level 30 your greatsword will be 10-15 points behind, at least... this means you'll hit less often, and for less damage.

I wish I could justify using greatsword, but I can't. This game WAS NOT DESIGNED with your preference in weaponry in mind. You're more or less forced into using your class-specific weapons.

I was disappointed with Great Swords when I was leveling my Warrior. The swords got really expensive, and they didn't do as much damage as Hand-to-hand with a Monk sub. My WAR/MNK with H2H, +8 STR, Mithkabobs, Martial Arts, Counter, Double and sometimes berserk I did serious damage. I'd hit 2-3 times each round, and do %100-200 more damage then a WAR with a sword/axe. The TP builds like crazy, and with boosting before unleashing Combo I would hit between 100-200hp on toughs to ITs (often times hitting 300hp against easys to evens).

If you have a WAR/MNK you should seriously consider H2H weapons.

There is also the consideration of how much more costly missing is with a slower weapon. While a weapon that does half the damage but is twice the speed of another weapon may miss the same percentage, two misses in a row with the faster weapon is a lot less costly than two misses in a row with the slower weapon. I notice this only really when I'm soloing with my great sword and the mob hits me 2 times and then I miss, it hits me again twice and then I hit. In parties though, the extra damage makes up for it being slow and the weapon skills are much more devestating.

Warrior is all about the Great AXE baby the scythe is very nice and at high level looks so so sweet. Always remember the scythe gives early AOE ws at 125.
