When you die, you lose 10% of the experience points you need to the next level. You can de-level if you lose enough experience points.

If you are raised, you regain 25% of the experience points you lost; Raise II and Raise III restore higher amounts of experience.

Well, first there's usually some cursing. Then you lose 10% of the xp required to attain your next level. If losing this 10% brings you below zero, you fall to the previous level. There's a demoralizing 'level-down' sound, and then usually some more cursing.

Then you can do one for two things:
1) Sit there and try and get someone to raise you.
2) Return to your home point.

You automatically return to your home point at 60 minutes real time.

But you've forgotten about what happens after you level up to something like..say...30. And then you go and get all that lovely lvl 30 equipment.....and you die..and de-level....and now you can't wear that new equipment you just got....

Then as you're eating the dirt, somehow you manage to produce a string of words...usually the same 4-letter word...beginning with an f and ending with a k.

Heh...happened to me 2 days ago.

Some other interesting things about dying in FFXI:

- Nobody really dies in FFXI. You get "knocked out" or K.O.'d.

- At higher levels, it's usually worth it to get one of your buddies to find a player to Raise you when you get K.O.'d. An exception to this rule would be if your Home Point is nearby and you're in a good, steady, XP-rolling party. In this case, it's not worth the downtime looking for a rezzer and waiting for your rez-sickness to wear off. Just warp back to your home point and run back to your party.

- A 'rezzer' is slang for a player with the ability to use Raise to resurrect another K.O.'d player. In FFXI, a WHM at least level 25 or a RDM at least level 38 has this Spell. I believe 'rezzer' is a holdover from EQ, but the term has stuck with a lot of FFXI players.

- While K.O.'d, you cannot shout or search of other players, so you'll have to rely on your buddies or the kindness of strangers to get a Raise.

- If one of your comrades has fallen in battle, use the following commands to find a rezzer:

/sea WHM 25<
/sea RDM 38<

Only one person in your group should be the designated 'rezzer-seeker' so that the poor rezzer doesn't get flooded with requests to raise the same player. Send them a tell politely asking them if they would mind raising your buddy. Don't get all pissy if they say they're too busy, they can't, or even if they don't reply at all. Just move on and try another rezzer. If somebody moseys by and raises your friend while you have somebody else on their way to do it, immediately send a tell to the first rezzer you contacted and politely let them know that their services are no longer needed. It's frustrating when I get a request for a raise and spend five minutes getting to the right area, only to find the K.O.'d person already got a Raise from a passerby. Once you're raised, show your appreciation with a "Thank you" or a bow or offer them money or items. If you choose to say "Thank you", use the translation feature. Type "thank" and hit the TAB key.

- You can also shout for a Raise. This behavior is looked down upon by some players, but I don't think it's bad form. Use the translation feature when shouting for a raise and be sure to include the coordinates. The following command is fairly common:

/shout (Raise) <pos> (Please check it!)

- 'rez-sickness' is a period of time (not sure exactly how long) after you've been resurrected or 'rezzed' when your stats are significantly lowered. You're basically useless and helpless until this effect wears off.

- A 'rez-kill' is another little goodie to look forward to when rezzed. This is when a nearby monster attacks you while you're suffering from rez-sickness and kills you in one hit. Another way to get rez-killed is from an Area-of-Effect spell cast by nearby combatants--gobbie bombs, for instance. When recuperating from rez-sickness, stay well away from all battles and monsters.

- Being K.O.'d can be used as a quick, convenient, and potentially costly, form of transportation. If you're in a dangerous or unknown area and you don't have access to a Teleport or Warp, you can always walk up to the nearest monster, pick a fight with it, and get a free trip back to your home point. Not an ideal way to travel, but it works in a pinch.

I don't know if the 10% is true for level 1. My homepoint is in Jeuno, and whenever I'm in another town and want an easy way there, I switch to a level 1 job and go get my *** kicked. I haven't hit level 2 yet, but my experience has never gone down when I switch back to that character. It's always at the level I left it.

Yeah, at lower levels, you don't lose experience. I think it's level 1, but I'm not sure, never actually died that low. Wouldn't make much sense to de-level to level 0...
