does anybody know if AH prices are available on the internet? and if not, for the computer specialists, how hard would it be to get them out of the game?

unless you wanna try hacking into SE's servers (which I don't suggest you do) you aren't gonna get the prices out of them. It would take WAY to much time and effort to do any other way, esp since you would need different lists of thousands of items for each server as they have different economies and the prices can fluxuate by the hour. Be nice to have bigger price histories, more search features, ect, but it isn't gonna happen outside of Vana'diel.

P.S. And even different lists for each nations AH's.

When you use the AH, isn't the information sent from the server to your computer? would it be possible to record that information on somewhere on your own machine?

*disclaimer: my knowledge of the inner workings of computers is beginner level at best

might be possible, but it would be HIGHLY illegal, forget getting your account banned, expect FBI agents to bust down your door and drag you into the street in your undies.

If he hacked the servers, yes. But if you had someone constantly checking the AHs and capturing that data for a web site you could do it without the FBIs involvement. But that would be so time intensive as to be virtually impossible.

Might be able to do it with SQL and RDBM but how to draw the info from the AH to the daabase is beyond me. That in itself shouldn't violate any rules or policies, as I've seen it done in other MMOG's such as Planetside.

Would be nice, but will never happen... 30 servers constaly updated with hundreds of item prices? Heck even the online item DB's are incomplete....

Here's a much better solution, keep a list of item you are commonly dealing with, for my this is fish, cooking ingreds, farmed items, etc. Update the list from time to time when you notice a price changes. I also write down the proce to buy and sell the items at NPC or Guild...come in handy when I'm working on synthing.

for research purposes, i'd only be interested in charting the data for a select set of items from just one server (start small, altho thats already pretty big).

more thoughts on how it might be possible greatly appreciated.

I sent a message to SE about this issue requesting a possible XML feed or even an hourly file download. I have heard no response yet. If anyone has had more success or would like to put together a team to try to replicate it as best as possible let me know. I'm good with SQL and ASP, ok with perl and PHP.

Man, I would love to see this.. but I think it might ruin the economies in the game.

Some people make money by buying items in one AH or vendor and selling in another AH, virtual import/export dealers if you will..

Some people use mules to quickly check prices and/or sell in other countries.. or to buy and ship goods to another character to sell, synth, etc.

All of those things are within the rules of the game, but I think if you were able to check prices just by clicking a query and see the prices in each countries AH and the history of the sales.. you would quickly be able to find ways to make a ton of gil by manipulating the economies on the entire server which I think would be a very bad thing.. The markets would crumble... and mass hysteria would ensue.

It would be something for me to do at work besides spam the forums here though. :) and wish I had hundreds of thousands of gil to buy sweet items.

nice thought!
However, i dont think it would ruin the economy of the game. Since I personally think it works very well, the only ones that will suffer from this are the people making huge profits by charging way too much for some items. Eventually, there will always be a certain demand and supply for items, deciding on what the price will be.

In my linkshell, we often ask each other what the price differences are. I once shouted in Sandoria that brass flower pots were about 1k in Bastok in a shop, while they sold for 2k in sandoria at the AH. Result: in 1 week, the price went from 2100 to 1400. Somehow, it is back up again, so i think the people importing those flower pots were tired of big effort, for the small trouble.

Perhaps one day SQUENIX will post a link on their site where a person can log in using their POL information and whatnot. They could provide a link to see the going prices in the AH and you could check to see if your items had sold or not. Possibly even check the conquest campaign on your server. I have absolutely no idea how hard this would be considering they probably have their hands pretty full as it is... especially getting ready for the influx of all the PS2 users. Eh it's a thought.

But just imagine the server load and bandwidth...I'd at least like to see my character's current info (location last logged, gil, equipment, levels for jobs, weapons, magic, and crafts) which could be checked by logging on with my POL account ID and password via a SSL site. That shouldn't take up too much bandwidth and server load, but a dynamic AH web database would seriously tax the server, IMO.

bandwidth shouldnt be a problem. Personally, i would suggest making a website and use PHP/XML technology that can withstand the amount of traffic.

It would be a nice idea though. Maybe there are really fanatic japanese linkshells that actually have this. Unfortunately I dont have a very good insight on what the knowledge base is on the Japanese sites, but i think it is generally spoken higher than mine/ours as Europeans and/or people from the other side of the atlantic.
