I doubt it.

You have to have an internet connection, which means you have to have a computer already and could have had FFXI months ago.
Then you need to have a special internet adapter for the PS2, and a keyboard attachment. That's an extra 50?100? dollars when you could just have bought the game months ago and play on your computer.

Obviously there will be some market. Non-windows users/people who have really old computers/die-hard console fans.
It'll be more people, but I'd be surprised if it were a shockwave.

I know a lot of people that are FF fans that dont have PC or PC's that can handle game, and are waiting for it to come out for Ps2.

Majority of MMORPG gamers are 21+ and lots of us Final Fantasy fans are getting on in years (Final Fantasy 11 now) we have full time jobs and disposable income, im sure while it wont be on the size of the PC rush it will over a period of a couple months add quite a few numbers to our ranks.

I'm joining an LS where one of the main goals is to help out the PS2 newbies that are coming in. Perhaps it will minimize the impact of a bunch of console gamers (now with keyboards!) sitting at the AH asking how to perform basic functions and/or level their characters or find items, etc.

That's the effect the PS2 release will have on me. I'll have the chance to corrupt... err... help people.

Besides, maybe I can sway some of them away from the level to level grind and interest them in socialization, RP and exploration. Those are what I enjoy most in the game after all.

I think you under-estimate the popularity this game will receive on the PS2 when it comes out. Whatever the installed base is for the network adaptor, well take that number and I bet 70% at least will eventually buy FFXI for their PS2. The type of person who usually buys console add-ons are not casual gamers. They are either hardcore or enthusiasts and those are the type of people who play RPG's. Also don't forget that Final Fantasy originated on the console platform and has a much larger following compared to strictly PC gamers. You can be sure that the number of players flooding into the servers will be massive and the PS2's installed base itself is about 60 million I believe.
#9 Jan 28 2004 at 9:57 AM Rating: Good
I agree with anyone who said that lots of PS2 users will be flooding the servers. When you think about the demanding specs of FFXI, and the fact that buying/building a new computer can be anywhere from 4 to 15 times the price of just getting the PS2 version...

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Ya i agree with the people here....we are gonna get a lot of new people onto the servers.....i know my friend has a decent computer and i told him to buy it for the pc but for some reason he insisted that he wanted to wait for it to come out on the ps2...y i dont know but just from that i have a feeling others are thinking the same thing..maybe thinking they wont get as much lag because it will have been made to fit that PS2 or something like that. But ya i do think we are gonna get a helluva lot of new players on the servers.

You dont need a computer to have a internet connection. Contact your ISP when you get the hardware for PS2. They will abe able to set everything up no prob, I know this because I work for a major ISP.

Well, two things to think about :

1) A radeon 9800 pro costs more than a PS2+FFXI+ADAPTER.
2) There are 60+ million PS2 systems sold in the world right now. A fair part of that will have access to the game after the american release.

Now is not the time to craft. Now is the time to make as much money as you can. Come march commodities and crystal markets will crash because of the influx of people eager to get 50 gil for that fire crystal. Then you can spend that money and get a good return on your craft skills, IMHO.

All I have to say about this is get geared up guys for big time Expeditionary Forces.

Right now: "The Beastmen are on the Rise"

Come March: "Welcome to South Gobstaberg"
"You have entered the town of Sand O'Orc
"The Beastmen own you all"

We are going to need to be diligent about reclaiming areas or we will all suffer.

Another reason the PS2 release will be big, is the attraction of being able to sit on your lazy boy, while playing on a 61" screen.

I think the PS2 version will sell very well. I constantly hear from my party members that "mom or dad needs to use the computer". The PS2 verion will be more accomidating to families that share 1 computer.

Do not underestimate the power of the console.

Remember, this game is originally designed for the PS2 console, and there have been MANY people waiting to purchase it for the aformentioned PS2. And some people simply prefer console gaming (myself included).

Also, many people have PC's, but most have family PC's that are good for Word-Processing, E-Mail, and Internet. Most don't have uber gaming PCs. It is all around cheaper for a PS2 w/ Network Adaptor, a HDD w/ Final Fantasy, and a cheap USB Keyboard (around 320 bucks total).

$100 dollars is twice the amount of a regular game ($50), and though it is because you are getting a HDD with it, I can see this price being daunting to many consumers, especially younger players. Parents simply won't want to pay that much. It would be smart on SQE's part to retail it at $50 and take a hit at the Point of Sale, knowing full well they will make that money back in less than half a year.

Servers won't be overloaded because server selection is random. Remember, you can only use World Passes to choose your own server. Also, the SQE will probably add servers if the influx becomes to great, like they did with Asura.

My thing with all of this is the lower age demographic of console gamers. I can just imagine the number of young 133t h4cker$ coming into the game. If any doubt's this, go try EQOA. It's full of 'em!

Thankfully, most don't get to the high level game, so 40+ will be a little more safeguarded from this.

I am somewhat concern, but not for the same reasons...

My primary annoyance is the shout function. OH MY GOD. Sometimes I want to shout back STFU you n00b. Common now. I can see whenever a shout is necessary, but common questions can be answered by people near by. LFG or help with quests are cool...but what the hell is up with these fools asking how to make money, how to fish, or better yet....asking for money from you. What the hell? I have never asked for money from anyone. I make my money. Bleh...my pet peeve maybe.

I will help out the PS2 players as Japanese players helped me. Why? There's nothing wrong with helping...as long as the other person asks nicely. Prime example: some dude was playing as a warrior in San Doria - I was messing around with my RDM so I healed and gave him protect. I would see him from time to time dying so I helped. Well, the fool ran off and starts fighting an orc...got owned...and told me I was an idiot for not helping him. WTF? I know that's only one, but there are many more similar where they expect you to do something for them. People like that just makes me reluctant to help...So yeah...I will help if asked nicely...hehehe

*sigh* This thread again. THis time I'll just point out two things:

1) How many of you, yes you own a PS2? Exactly. A large amount of people either have XI allready and if they buy it for PS2 will be doing so they can have their mule/bazaar going 24/7 or so they can play on the big teevee in the livingroom.

2) If you're scared about all the underage/stupid/twinkie players RUSHING to the game? Well I hate to say it but the average age for this game is MUCH lower than 21. To an average of the ages listed on XI forums and you'llfind that it's closer to 14-15 than it is 21-25. Has the game been ruined yet? No.

Also, these bad/scary/stupid/young/purple players you're worried about? How many of them do you think will actually go out and buy a KB? So, big deal.. you have a bunch of players /you/ deem undesirable.. and they have no KB and as thus can't /tel bother you as easily. Gosh, seems like a type of player that is very easy to avoid.

We need to help the noobs, shape the noobs, teach them the value of things.

Make sure they know not to manual dodge.
Make sure they know how the AH works.
Make sure they know that fire crystals are worth 25 gil instead of the 15 a merchant offers and that traveller's mantles are common drops from all undead and can be sold for about 500 gil.
Make sure they know they can send those worthless Leaping Boots to Valeri's mog house on Ifrit using the person at the AH.

Ahem.

*cough*

That's all I have to say.

I am one of those PS2 owners that you speak of, that will be getting the game in March. Maybe it wont be as bad as you think cause I know I can't be the only one soaking up as much FFXI Info as I can before the game releases so I at least know the basics when I log on my first time. So some of thise "noobs" might actually know a thing or two. ;) Also about the age thing, the average age for a PS2 owner is actually over 25, so there might not be as many little teenagers getting it as there are 20+ who know a thing or two about MMORPGs.

Cya on March 24th. :)

So funny and so true.

I remember back in Oct 28th, '03, when I first signed on and looked at the region I was in. I had first joined San D'Oria, and it was ranked 1st and Bastok and Windurst were allied, ALLIED against SD to try and keep up. The map looked like a swath of Red cloth. SD controlled everything except for the immediate regions outside Bastok and Windurst, and I'm sure given them another month they might of.

Within 1 RL week, San D'Oria, had not only lost 1st place but they had lost Ronfarrau, the area right outside of their castle to the Beastman. And forest was littered with the corpses of young Elvaan recruits, their heads mounted on the top of pikes in Ghelsba. I could hear the Nippon players over the sea, groaning WTF!!!???

Yeah, be prepared to start pulling your weight in conquest by doing ALOT of expeditionary forces.

And as to the flood of ps2 players. Anyone can afford the internet these days, it's like $10 on Juno.com. But how many could afford the 2k computer to run the game. Luckily I was in the market for a new laptop anyways, but man, I had to add new memory for me to run it the way I liked it. Hi-res, weather effects, bit mapping and no choppiness. So yeah, expect a flood of PS2 people. Wait til they add Europe and we'll go through this all over again.

The good thing is, if we find any good players on the way, we'll add them to your LS. Always nice to mold someone in yor own image and have them idolize you....oh sorry, my 'God' complex getting away with me again...sorry sorry.... :)

Ah.. the smell of elitism at it's finest. Are you aware that the same caricature you're painting of PS2 owners is most likely the same one the JP people applied to you?

Oh, you're going to run and hide in some high level area, so the scary, SCARY n00bs don't hurt your precious little mind? Pfft. There are n00bs in KHAZAM, and some of you are most likely part of them. What is to be gained if all the people with knowledge of the game, withdraw from those who seek it? Sure, one can learn without a teacher, but the process is most cretainly harder.

I wish I could save this topic and all like it, so that when you finally crawl out of your ivory towers, full with self-importance, and have the nerve to complain about how the PS2 n00bs are acting, I can show you how they got that way:

You, and all like you who were too damn uber to stop questing for the almighty level, and school a new person.

Here's the benefits when Ps2ers come (so long as the low lvlers' zones aren't taken over by beastmen):

- easier for crafting (cheaper)
- profit profit profit for those low lvler crafters!
- more addition to LS
- livlier servers w/ more NA speakers (not that it's bad w/ jp players, but I always feel left out when all i see in party chatmodes are symbols)
- beta kits for the beta testers=) *cheers*

downside:

- the 'kids' w/ credit cards will spam the shout chat mode
- bigger blcklist
- less profit for some (who relies on crystals for money)
- less places to gil farm
- more trains (accident or in purpose)

Overall I think it's nice to get ps2ers in the servers =)
