The two times I've PTed with a beastmaster I've noticed that they were excellent PT members - excellent pullers, using their pets to soften up the target before the PT moved in for an easy kill. But that's just it... I've only PTed with them twice... out of hundreds of times - why are they so unpopular? It's not like their pets affect the exp of other party members... I'd imagine a team of 6 beastmasters with whm subs could steamroll an area pretty easily!
The thing is, most people think their pet does effect party experience. Also, like most litte-used classes, noone quite knows what it can do. Bards are rarer than diamonds on Alexander, and quite frequently I have to inform people of what I can do as a Bard. They think Bard is either a waste-space character, or they base their ideas of Bard on other MMORPG's. This makes it very hard to get a group.
I imagine Beastmasters run into the same problem. Noone knows what they can do, everyone sees them as a solo class, and people think Beastmasters are going to cost them experience (thank you, Bradygames, you #%*$@! up again). Also, what noone realizes is how good a Beastmaster would be at controlling a fight. 3 monsters show up? No problem, the Beastmaster Charms one, sets it on the second, while the party finishes off the third.

I'm a level 50bst/whm on Sylph, and i've only PT'd with this job a whopping 2 times the entire way. My experience with BST is that because you don't have to find a group, wait for groups to get going, deal with stupid pullers, wait for replacements, wait for group downtime, and hunt in overpopulated and overpopular areas you can make far more experience alone than you ever could with a group.
As of right now i'm solo'ing Cockatrice in Ozatraja, getting 200xp a kill, never stopping (I sit to heal my mana and HP after I pull another and have my pet start fighting), and getting tons of very expensive cockatrice meat and skin. If I had to group right now, i'd probably be getting less xp. Even if it was even or a little slower with BST, i'd still go solo, because this way I never have to go farm, I collect my loot while I level, the way the game (I think) was meant to be played.
The only time I ever group is during quests and with friends for the fun of it, it's just not worth it otherwise.
Just my two cents.

Hahaha That's exactly what I said! Maybe I should get my Beastmaster's job today. :3 I sure could use a lil extra money and Bst sounds like a whole lotta fun.
You get Wide Scan as well, and lots of fodder to take out NM's that other classes can't solo yet. Meaning you can fight the Valkurm Emperor at lvl 25-30 instead of lvl 40+ by throwing flies and crabs at it untill it dies. And because your a BST and not a RNG few will know you have the Wide Scan ability so you have an advantage camping it. Unlike the silly rangers that strip off their telltale gear and go anon to try to hide the fact (but aren't fooling anyone) you'll have Wide Scan and very few people will even realize it.

Hell, I am a thief and I get more exp solo'n easies then looking for a group most of the time...

Even my level 45-50 thf friends can't solo easy's anymore, you'll find later on that most of your damage comes from sneak/trick, and aside from perhaps your first hit, you won't be getting off any of that during battle solo =\
And if you're getting more XP getting 18-43 a kill than with a group, I only have one thing to say, find some better groups :)
yeah BST is actually a good class. Other than the myth that bsts' pet cuts group xp (it WILL cut xp only if the pet is higher than the highest lvl in pt), they also can't join much in renkeis since they're only good at 1h axe and that weapon doesn't really go well much in renkei patterns. Also it can be a nuisance sometimes(and dangerous) when the bst loses control over its pet. Plus they don't have that much to contribute in a PT.
After I get my DRG/WHM Combo lvl where Im satisfied I planed on making a BST/THF. But I have a pattern to everything. :) Started as a war, lvl to 18 became whm/war taking whm to 30 after that gonna get drg. When i get bored of my drg im gonna start lvl my thf with a variety of subs war/whm/drg one of the 3 and take that to 30 and get my bst, then sub in thf with that. Its all in the plans baby. :)
