I've looked into this as well, and the windows IME for the japanese language does not work in FFXI. However.. i have switched the alphabets once before... but since then i'm beginning to think i was either hallucinating, or i drempt up the whole thing. If it really is not an available feature in the NA release, I think I'll mail SE about this. Personally, i would love to use FFXI as a medium for improving my japanese language skills, and i don't see why SE would object to the promotion of the japanese language.

Mostly because it is something they would have to spend more time and money on, and it would be an option so rarely utilized that they would probably have a hard time justifying it. Between the auto-translator and the ability of nearly every Japanese player to read romanji, there is no practical reason to implement it.

"Rarely Utilized"? I don't think so. I know MANY people who would love this option as they speak both English and Japanese. I also speak some Japanese and I don't think it's fair that we only get the option of writing out in romaji any thing we want to say in Japanese, especially since not all Japanese can even read romaji.

It forces us to use the Auto-Translator, which although very cool and a great idea is lacking many things. But to reiterate the initial point, there's no reason at all why North Americans shouldn't be able to enjoy the same pleasure that the bilingual Japanese clients enjoy.

press tab while the text input box is up. it will bring upa menu. you can also start typing an english word and press tab and it will give you a list of words to choose from that start with that(those) letter(s).

I looked into this extensively when I started. There is only one way to get Japanese language input.

Buy the Japanese version of the game.
Set your windows system language region to Japanese.
Install

Play in Japanese, -everything- will be in Japanese, except for some stuff they've deliberately kept "cool and english" like Character names and the names that float above npcs and monsters.

It -is- tremendous Japanese practice.... but unless you're near native you'll have a pretty steep learning curve.

P.S. I actually play this way, btw. So I know it will work.

Romaji's nice. I haven't had any Japanese people complain to me about doing that. ^^;

Have you noticed how they kind of ignore you in the group though?

When I had a group for hunting the magic papyrus, uor entire group needed to sneak through Eldieme. I take 5 steps and my sneak starts running out so i say, "suni kiresou". No response. Couple seconds later, another member says, "ƒXƒjØ‚ê" and he gets sneak cast on him. I ask again, and nothing. Only when I used the auto-translator did they see and sneaked me up again.
