You will need to purchase a new CD-Rom drive, these can be purchased very cheaply at local computer shops and online. (Try pricewatch.com or newegg.com). Installing a drive is very easy, somewhat decent directions can be found at:

I hope all of this helps. I have had 2 cdroms go out in my moms computer, and even found a replacement at a thrift store for $5 and it works fine.

i agree... CD drives are so cheap that it's probably a waste of time trying to fix it anyway..

tho you might wanna look into one option: check drive letters and paths, if you've added a HD or something the game may not find the CD cause it's not at the same drive letter as it was...

if
you know that's not the case,
then
goto 10

Make sure to check the cables inside are fully connected, I know it sounds lame, but sometimes the easist solution is the best. Also take it out and try it on another computer if you can, that will tell you where the problem is, CDROM or system. Try switching it to another cable connection too (if you know how to do this properly).

If you can't fix it, just make sure you don't buy a cheap *** one, I bought one for $50 a few years back (when they were normally like $100-200) and will loath it forever, damn thing just could not sync with the computer because of power down feature, so the system would request data, it would spin up, and the system would give up, it would have the data, and then the system tried again, but by now since the system gave up it powered down and it all started over, sometimes I had to reboot. It was just sad. And yes, I got its new drivers, even emailed the tech support, they basically said it was just a feature of the drive, arg!

While you are at it, why not just buy a dvd-burner and you can burn up to 4.7gigs of **** onto a disc! They are cheap as hell, I got mine for $150 CND, does every media type and came with great software.

hm ... i'd recommend a cd/dvd combo. You can read and write r/rw +/-

You can't burn back up ff11 cds. Not possible :P ( or was that back up the whole game so you don't have to update from the beginning ? *shrugs ).

optical drives are getting cheaper atm :) especially cdrws. But you'd also want to be able to play dvds thats why i said to get a combo :) and also theres 2 dvd formats the - and the + =^-^=;

and to top things up you'd be happy being able to back your stuff up on cd =^-^=;

e.g. to store your animes/music on cds and keep your hard drive space free so you can play final fantasy 11 without laging heh.

Well, I also have a DVD drive too, and my brother told me he used that once before to play a game, not sure if he is right, but would I be able to play a game in the DVD drive or is it not good for the computer or something?

of course you'd be able to play.

of course some dvd writer combos only support certain formats and also probably some compatibility issues with writable discs e.g. verbatim and others.

anyway heres and example of a review of the Plextor PX-708A (DVD±RW)

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/121

you can find other reviews of the latest dvd combos out there here www.cdrinfo.com and etc :P

if the thing says support cd rom and dvd rom, your good to go.

cdr/rw , dvd r/w +/- is just a plus. Thats all you need to know :)
