Make sure to check the cables inside are fully connected, I know it sounds lame, but sometimes the easist solution is the best. Also take it out and try it on another computer if you can, that will tell you where the problem is, CDROM or system. Try switching it to another cable connection too (if you know how to do this properly).
If you can't fix it, just make sure you don't buy a cheap *** one, I bought one for $50 a few years back (when they were normally like $100-200) and will loath it forever, damn thing just could not sync with the computer because of power down feature, so the system would request data, it would spin up, and the system would give up, it would have the data, and then the system tried again, but by now since the system gave up it powered down and it all started over, sometimes I had to reboot. It was just sad. And yes, I got its new drivers, even emailed the tech support, they basically said it was just a feature of the drive, arg!
While you are at it, why not just buy a dvd-burner and you can burn up to 4.7gigs of **** onto a disc! They are cheap as hell, I got mine for $150 CND, does every media type and came with great software.
