Need Serious Advice... (Please Read!)Follow

#1 Jan 23 2004 at 1:18 PM Rating: Decent
Allright - before I get going - let me give you the levels of my current jobs (not going to include level 1's)

Dragoon | 37 |
Thief | 31 |
Paladin | 20 |
Ninja | 18 |
Dark Knight | 18 |
Monk | 12 |
Warrior | 6 |
Ranger | 5 |

-----------------------------------------------------------

Anyway - as you can see I've done my fair share of leveling, but when it comes to picking a combination I am seriously getting so frusterated at not being happy with a combination it's coming to the point its annoying myself, my friends, and my guild. Now sure, most people "commonly" say, Be what you wanna be dude! No crap - the problem is, what to do when you DONT know what you wanna do.

Here are combinations I am looking at right now - and would love some advice.

| Choice #1 | ~ | PLD/WAR |

Reasoning-
Well I hear that this is a great combination, I like Paladin from what I've played but the main problem is, obviously there not a damage dealer, they die more than almost any class in the game, and I would have to level my Warrior rather constantly to keep up with my Paladin. Not sure about how badly they are wanted at higher levels.

| Choice #2 | - | RNG/NIN |

Reasoning-
Basically ultimate damage. I may be leaning towards this right now, but a few downsides to ranger that really concern me, their armor looks horrible all the way up, Samurais, Ninjas, Monks get their awsome looking Gi's around 35-40, most Melee's get really good looking plate mail... and Rangers... they get to wear stuff that makes Mages Frown down ! Personally I've grouped with very few Rangers, there just not that common - they seem to do good damage, but I am unaware if they are really wanted in groups during the course of leveling up.

| Choice #3 | - | BST/NIN |

Reasoning-
I dont personally give a damn that most Beastmasters sub WHM, I would sub Ninja because I want to. Personally this is close to RNG/NIN for being my favorite right now because of the simple fact they can solo whenever they want, and exp is fast, they level up fast, etc. Not having to deal with constant "SEEKING GROUP!" or dealing with certin individuals in parties. I dont know -ANY- Beastmasters in my guild - if anyone here has played one or has a friend thats one I would appreciate some info on how they are.

| Choice #4 | - | DRK/THF |

Reasoning-
I think this would be fun for awhile - but the problem is there seems to be SO many Damage dealers in the game, nobody wants to play a support role. Main problems I hear about Darks is theres a ton of them, you hvae to know it -EXTREMLEY- well to play one CORRECTLY aka using Soul Eater & Last Resort without biting the dust. Not the most expensive class though - would save on some money I suppose.

| Choice #5 | - | SAM/THF |

Reasoning-
Samurais are just bad-*** in general, building TP as fast as they do and being able to crank out Skillchains is awsome. This is probaly close to the top in terms of what I am thinking of doing. Some people complain about Thief as a sub - however most see the added benefit of the DEX & AGI, and the fact you get Sneak Attack, Treasure Hunter, etc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyways - those are currently the choices, hell, maybe we can keep this bumped because its so long winded its almost like a type of guide for those thinking about similar classes. Any advice on these combinations would be awsome - especially from those who have played as one of these.
Thanks in advance for the help!
Not so much a complaint - its just I am very frusterated trying to figure out what I should do. And I'm just looking for some simple advice.
BST is fun, but when things go bad, they go REAL bad. I think that is why so many people have WHM as a sub. Although Utsusemi would probably get rid of many of those problems.
I played with a RNG/NIN the other night at lvl 32, this player was insane, very expensive job but wow no job can hold to that damage.
The other combos you posted I wouldn't bother with for me. I don't like PLD just cause it's boring to me, stand and get hit :P. I really hate subbing THF unless I am farming, I just can't stand the lame SA and other abilities cause it's subbed.
I know a few people who have the issues in my LS. All I will do is comment on your choices you have picked.
1. This is a good combo and you will make the best tank in the game. You won't be a damage dealer actualy you will probably be the worst damage dealer in the same that a true (not including rdm or bard) melee class. With any subjob you will have to lvl it up as you lvl =(
2. Realy the main reason to do this from what I understand is the ability to use 2 of them daggers that give pluses agi and ranged attack I believe (not sure). I can't realy comment on the armor but those two class are the most expesive melee classes to maintain. I mean you'll burn through arrows like you won't believe. If you want to get ninja scrolls again you'll either pay for them or pay to get the fame via beads or ore quest. I don't want to mention the power used as well.
3. Don't know much about beast other than you should be able to solo well. I'm thinking about trying this out as well but I need to clear out some room first to get some new gear in my bank.
4. Drks a cool class but because it is cool theres way too many on my server and yes you will need to know what to do in order to not die in a grp or not get the WHM to die cause of healing you too much. I think WAR/SAM/mnk would be a better choice for sub while in grp soloing thf TH is nice. If you want to go with a mage sub blm/rdm ...maybe whm if soloing are also nice to have.
5. Sam/Thf not sure if this good or bad I know warrior is normal sub but who knows. Thf will help with agi which helps you hit more but I'm just not sure if this is viable option or not.
If I look at your choices and the current lvl you have I would suggest possible lvling up your thf to 37 since your at 31 only 6 more lvl's and you can sub it and be maxed when your main choice reaches 75. Also it seems you realy like nin as sub so it would be safe to lvl that to 30 as well. Sorry if this doesn't help you decide which route to choose.
Why not try out THF/NIN or NIN/THF? They are two great tastes that taste great together from what I hear.
Another idea is to try out a casting class for a while to try tp break up the routine. I am be biased since I am a Red Mage, but there is something to be said for the spell casting set. You will see the game in a whole new light.
Well i'm a 36 paladin and it's alot more than just stand and get hit...you are solely responsible to keep your mages alive. You alone must take and hold the aggro regardless of how many nukes and heals your mages let go. The minute that aggro is gone = dead mage. Yes all you do is take hits but there is more to it than just standing there.
Sorry i hate it when people say all paladins do is stand and get hit.
Oh I am terribly sorry you don't just stand there, you need to provoke. Oh and also use protect, oh wait that is like provoke hmm. Well at least you get Shield Bash :D.
BTW - I was just messing around about standing there, it's just all his other main job from combos imo are more fun ^^
PS - :P means I'm messing around.
I love paladins. And I certainly wouldn't think their job is boring because they have immense responsibility and a lot to do to accomplish it. (flashing, voking, curing, standing in the right place if you have a thf) You would need to level your warrior as you said though, because constant provoking will help you a lot. We recently couldn't find a paladin and took a warrior instead. What a mistake. Without the PLDs mana to help heal himself, I was being drained each fight and we had a hard time getting exp chains. The only time I'd take something else over a PLD would be for a Ninja, as they make me useless and bored. (time to raise Divine!)
Rangers to INSANE damage, but are very expensive. I partied with a ranger earlier this week using a gun and your eyes just pop out when they do 800+ damage with a weapon skill that's ready to go in 3 more swings and then your jaw drops to the floor when they Barrage for 600+. All in one fight. With a ninja sub, this would make you twice as expensive! ><
About DRKs, I don't really see how it should be seen as a "problem" that you know how to play your own class. lol
Anyway, it depends what you have fun doing. If you like being a damage dealer be a RNG or DRK. If you want to feel like the center of attention, be a PLD. If you want people to fight over you to be in their party, go Bard. ^^
Chiming in on BST. I play BST and I think that just about anything with works ok (if not great) as a sub. If you are a good beastmaster you can manage the fight between your pet and the mob well enough so that you will only need one or two hits to finish it off after the pet dies.
I would agree that WHM is the most useful sub for BST, any sub will do fine if know what you are doing. I use RDM myself and BRD sometimes since its more fun for me. I could defintely see ninja being a useful sub for BST.
A few things to keep in mind with that combo. Don't expect too many party invites. People tend to gravitate towards more traditional job pairings if possible. If you use ninja anything, you will need to farm for gil. And like Salty Taco said, things often go bad--expect to die often.
A possible fight management plan for BST/NIN soloing.
1) Use EM pet on T.
2) Hit pet early on with some type of attack that does NOT engage auto attack, prefereably something that does damage over time (sorry I am not familiar with Ninjitsu).
3) Towards middle or end of the fight, engage in attack mode. Take a couple of swings and back off. Do this by using autolock "*" key. Don't actually disengage.
4) Jump in with a swing whenever necessary to even up fight. Try not to attack more than once or tiwce at a time, to keep hate on pet.
5) As mob approaches 5% hp, use pet command "heel" and allow pet to die. Mob will hit you once, then kill pet.
6) Finish of the mob.
Possible solutions to things going bad:
Scenario 1: If Mob hp is double Pet hp at any time (assuming pet is not higher lvl than mob and mob has more than 50% hp remaining). Forget pet management and jump in and tank for pet. Most pets your lvl will do more damgae than you, but mob will still go after you. Ninjitsu will be useful. You will lose 30% xp for the battle, but its is better than dying.
Scenario 2: If Pet becomes uncharmed during fight. Forget pet management and charm the mob to kill original pet. You will get no xp from battle but no xp is better than dying. You can try to recharm orginal pet and continue to fight, but it results in death more often than I like. If you go that route, you should use additional charm macro /ja Charm <st>. A preventive measure for this would be to use DC pets.
Scenario 3: You try to charm a pet and fail. Run towards zone and keep hitting Charm macro. Use <t> macro for these situations, <st> macro will make things much more difficult.
I hope you choose BST.
