The banners are the EF. Only people that have the EF can activate the banner. It is stupid to try to get EXP from 3 mobs at a time. Thats why you fight 1 vs your party. So what you said is way way out of it no offense.

I know a good bit about the EF from speaking to JP.

Im going to steal your format ;). You might be correct but we only lost 1 person per flag. I would not think that 1 person would make that much of a difference. If say 5 or 6 died it would be fully understandable
From talking with a JP player we apparently did not take enough flags.

The gravity idea is a really really good idea. I did not even think about that. Normally my party will have the mages keep sleep on the mobs but some times they resist it. It seems after you put them to sleep once and they wake up to be harder to get them back to sleep.
