The impression i get from reading articles and speaking to people that unless you have another character at lv 60 it is not possible at all to get ANY of the avatars?

I have put serious consideration into becoming a summoner but if im going to be stuck with the bloody blue dog till llv 60 i dont see the point and i should just stick with my DRK

Is there no way to get the summons before you get another job to lv 60, coz from what ive seen, summoners with only carbuncle, are weak and of no use to a party unless they have WHM sub and can heal?

Somone please correct me..i do hope im wrong

There are 2 problems with the summoner job that I know of first if that you can't even get the quest for the different summons until you have enough fame. From what I understand you need to complete about 150 quest at least total. The 2nd is that you need to be high enought lvl to actualy complete the quests once given to you I think thats where the lvl 60 comes into play.

I still haven't finished the job quest for it yet (need heat and ice for gem and don't feel like sneaking around to get them) and even if I did complete it I don't want to even try to lvl him up with just that blue skunk. The only other summons I know about are the earth, wind, air and fire summons but from what people tell they are realy weak compaired to the avatars. However I know you can at least of them (earth I think) from Norg and I 've seen a few on sale at the AH on my server.

Another character...?

In this game you don't create another character. You level up another job. And even if you did have another character, you can't get the avatars for any character but the ones engaged in the fight.

Yes, a group does need to have an average level of 60 in order to do the fight (although getting to the location for the fight can be even more difficult). The route I'd suggest is quite simple.

Level up a class to 18 and finished the subjob quest.

Level up another class to 37.

Go back to your original job and level it up to 75. Finish the avatar fights in the meantime.

Switch to Summoner and start leveling up with all of the avatars.

Summoner here.
Yes, unless you have a lv60 job and a few high lv player friends OR you manage to get in a high lv party while you hide cowardly in the corner, you are stuck with the blue/green rag doll.
you need 120 quests (repeats counts) done in EACH region you want the summon.

OK YUNA WANNABES
Yeah, i will level my summoner only after I have capped everything else. I have better things to do than lvl 30 shouting in the autotranslate mode <SUMMONER> <AVATAR> <QUEST> <PLEASE>! In fact the Japanese players look at u and laugh. They think what a moron! You see, being a summoner is not about the job, its all about the journey you take to get there. Now that is RESPECT. If they made it easy, nobody would care as much.

Respect for what? That you were crazy enough to get insane fame for not only yourself the 5 other people to even try the quest? Lets not forget the fact that the "avatars" are **** poor in combat (from all reports and my own experience) and only useful for their "buff". What a pointless exercise for something that only allows you to be a buff bot.

Have you even see Astral flow? The great 2 hour of summoners? Not only can you not use it with low mp but if you have mana to use it, say 500 at the time, you lose ALL your mana ... and for what, the thing to MISS! I used my 2 hour last night to see what it would do and it did in fact MISS! Thats a fine use of a 2 hour and 250 mp.

I don't respect any 75th level summoner with avatars, I pity them.

Ok, I'm planning on taking up SUM as a sub-job for my Red Mage. One question, though. Is there a difference between the Summons you can buy in the AH and the summons you fight to get? I'm confused on the whole thing...

The avatars are the summons that you have grown to know and love. Example: Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh. The elementals are well....just elementals.

I dunno...I've seen summoners with white mage subs who were better than 2 white mages together. At level 25 they can get their garuda summon to cast aerial armor (group blink), and you can take down some insanly tougher creatures with that one on.

I am a summoner, summoner/white-mage in fact and you're better off in my opinion being a white-mage/summoner. You'll get the MP boost and regen from summoner which are two awesome features and not be a hamstrung white-mage.

Read any FAQ about summoners guys, they ALL say the summoner is in need of serious help. Don't take my word for it, or anyone elses here.

The ONLY class I ever looked forward to in this game is summoner... I thought about a dragoon, but nah I am a summoner-type-person.. Now I have heard from about 50+ people, and they all told me the same thing "If your going to be a summoner, get your main job to level 60+ and get all avatars before making summoner" I thought.. Well thats stupid, I dont want to be any class BUT summoner (Though the class I'm gettin to level 30 will be its subjob <WhiteMage>) But.. Since they all told me I'm basically useless until I get all summons, what chioce do I have, since its the main class I want to be, I am jus going to do what I have to do to make it enjoyable and useful
--- This is all jus my thoughts, I may be wrong on some parts, but oh well ---

To be a good summoner it will require a major time investment. It's just like a previous poster said (minus the Japanese butt licking of course) That a good summoner has paid their dues. It takes a lot of quest completions to be able to get what you need for the summons. You're probably not better off making SMN your second or even third class to level. Thankfully it looks like Square is about to majorly expand on the high end game here so your uber SMN will have things to do once you dinf yourself there :) *clink clink* two gil!
