I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to change my text input (in game) into katakana, hiragana and/or kanji (i believe all three are used in FFXI) I stumbled upon this a number of days ago, but i have not been able to rediscover what i did. Changing your windows keymap to japanese input does not do it. Thank you for any help/information you can provide :)

Yeah I've been trying to figure this out for such a long time and I still don't know how to set it up. I've heard that the North American version of FFXI does not support Japanese Input support but i'm not 100% sure about this rumour.

There are some FAQs in FFXI Online about this:

I think it might be required to own a Japanese PS/2 keyboard in order to type.

Does anyone have any clue on how to do this?

You need a Japanese keyboard to input Hiragana, Katakana, etc..

IME doesn't work.

thanks for the links, the win2000 equivalent ( http://www.ffxionline.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=45 ) was able to get it so i could switch to hiragana and katakana. However, in PlayOnline and FFXI, it will switch to Japanese input, but will not change the IME to anything but direct input (regular qwerty kb). A japanese keyboard may solve this, because it has a button built in to convert between alphabets, where as in my case it is a key sequence. there may be a key sequence that works in game, but i haven't found it. Trying by using the icon in the taskbar (avoiding key sequence) in PlayOnline does not work either, which suggests the programs have been coded to not accept non-japanese keyboards.

Edit: which Okan has said in a much shorter, and simpler way already. :)
