Finally made it to 30... now what?Follow

#1 Jan 23 2004 at 10:08 AM Rating: Decent
Last night, I made it to 30 as a rdm. And now I'm torn about what to do. I love being a rdm and it would be cool to get to level 38 so I can raise. But it seems like I am expected to go for an advanced job.

So what advanced job even plays well as a sub to a rdm? Really, the only thing I can see as feasible is DRK. That would give me possibly more mp (but not as much as a blm or whm sub) and attack strength, since I do like to melee and cast at the same time. And it would give me some cool spells like Drain. Level 38 is so close, and starting a job all over would put it back more.

Anyhow, I'm sure a lot of you are hitting your 30 level mark and have chosen your path or are questioning your future as I am.

What do you think are good classes for me? And what are you doing for yourselves?

For what you should do:

You are not expected to do anything but exactly what you feel like. If you don't want to level again sub what you've already been levelling up to 38, if you feel you wish to level another sub, do so.

As for what I did, i hit 30 THF/10MNK then retired both for a BST/WHM (on a mithra) due to hating how long things take to get a party / etc.

If you love rdm....play rdm

I would stay against a drk subjob....but I tend to think in terms of what would be most effective

I will hit 30blm tonight (i need only 2k exp). There is no way I'm giving up this class I love to be something else. I could take sum to be my sub for the extra mp - but I love my whm sub. I'm keeping what I have because I like it, so if you like being a crappy rdm (jk) stick with it.

Unless any of you want to see a taru ranger - I might give up my spells for a gun!

Yeah, if you like Rdm, stay one. At lvl40 you will become LOVED, because of Refresh :). I know for a fact there are not enough rdm on my server, so I doubt you'll have troubles finding parties.

I really think DRK sounds like an excellent subjob for a RDM.. more attack power, drain and aspir spells (RDM already have a dark magic skill)..

However, advanced jobs aren't the only way to go, thief could work well too, i guess.. (how does sneak attack + en-element work?) or any of the mage jobs, depending on which way you roll..

my experience as a RDM is that i never go empty on MP in a group situation (as long as some debuffs stick, at least), so i'd rather have my subjob boost my combat skills.

Not subbing WHM also might stop people from getting you on board as main healer (unless you want that ;) )

For RDM, you can always level you RDM. Once you acquire convert, refresh, and dispell, you will be one of the most useful profession around!! (and, think about RDM AF outfit!!). DRK flag is very easy, so you can do it at your free time.

For BLM, KEEP IT GOING!! Nothing is better than a high level BLM at crawler's nest (or anywhere else for that matter). Then, once you are Lv40+, then you unlock SMN yourself for extra MP (that is, without asking for high level's help).

Between lv45-55+, Level Cap quests and AF quests will keep you pretty busy for long time. Once you have reach Lv45+, almost all the adv. jobs will be easy for you, so you will be able to acquire them by yourself. So, that will be another thing to do at your free time. LOL

I'm probably no more than 2 weeks away from lvl 30, then I'll immediately go for DRK and sub either my WAR/THF, I'll have to test em both to see what I like..

/em shivers at the thought of a lvl 40+ rdm trying to melee in XP grp.

But anyway do what you feel right (but realy try to stay away from melee combat as you lvl in xp grps) as a lot of people have suggested you can sub what you want but I would recommand a mage type or maybe bard.

Ninja is a fun Sub job for Red mage. The En(water, fire, etc) spells affect both weapons. If you have some cash you can use some ninjutsu too.

If you are set on staying with RDM you can get ninja to 10 for duel wield then continue with rdm all the way up.

My first class to be 30 was a Redmange. I dumped it completely and went paladin/warrior. I sub redmage when i am solo as a paladin. Though i still plan to level redmage up with either black mage or ninja as it's subjob. My guy will have 2 classes that he is high level in by the time he is done. Also summoner as sub for extra mp if you like the magic side of redmage is not bad. I myself unlocked summoner at level 32 ( wihtout the help of any high level chars, i just dont have any of the summons yet)
I will get those once my paladin is strong enough to do it. It's really all up to you to decide what you want to do. Just don't let anyone conform you to a class you don't want or don't like because the guide or people say that if you are this you must sub this. The point is to have fun and be what you want.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do^^

I hit 30 last week, and haven't done any lvling except on my thf and whm to get them up to 15. I've also been farming a lot of cash, and a lot of skill trade items (Yes I'm a trade skiller). I've accomplished 2 goals out of 4 that I set for myself.

1) ride a chocobo. At first I didn't know how long this would take, but I always wanted to ride a chocobo.
2) 30rdm/15thf so I can do some treasure/NM hunting
3) 41 for refresh
4) and finally 75 for rdm (which will take me a long time)

Like what others have said, do what you want. My linkshell members have 2 or 3 advance jobs and have caught up to me in their advance jobs, but it doesn't really bother me. I play the game at a pace I want to. If you feel like going after a adv job, go for it (summoner or drk would be my choice). If you don't want to get adv job, don't need to, just keep on playing your rdm (route I'm going to take). Don't let anyone dictate what you should do, play the way you want to play. I guess that's one reason why i chose rdm.

you are not expected to do adv job..just like you didn't have to stop right at 18 and go do a subjob (personally i hit 20 in the dunes on a good group/team session before returning to town)

rdm is a great job to continue on..stay with that if you want.

First I have to say that I have to agree with Ikaz.. a meleeing RDM isnt exactly what people are looking for in a XP party... however, if that is not that important to you and you have a group of friends or an LS that doesn't mind you meleeing then by all means choose whichever sub you would like... just know that RDM are expected to me mages in oober XPing parties... that being said one route for you that I would recommend would be to pick up bard as your main... The Flag quest is a bit annoying but easy... and a brd/rdm give you fast cast at lvl 30 bard plus various heals and debuffs... I lvled my RDM to 32 then switched to bard and havent had any trouble finding groups since... it's not the most glamorous job, but bards are fairly rare and a must for BCNM fights... if you are just looking to go RDM, then obviously id stick with whm as your sub to find the most parties.
