Buy the strategy guide. Look at its pretty cover. Then throw it in the trash. Info you can get here and at other sites infinitely better and its free. Now, before you do anything know how to make macros. If you dont have macros for your skills and spells you are a gimp that no one wants in their party. I think there is a macro guide under the guide section here. If not, definitely one on www.gamefaqs.com. Know your role for your job. Casters cast and stay as far away from fight as possible. Tanks hold aggro and are supposed to get beat on. And damage dealers do damage. Dont be afraid to ask questions or take advice in game. If someone tries to let you know about how to play your class listen and ask questions. If they rant about how to play your class that usually means they dont know **** and the real problem is that they dont know how to play their own class. Dont listen to ranters. If you follow these few basic rules that apply for as long as you play the game I guarantee an excellent gaming experience.

For the First 10 levels or so.. it's best to fight Solo....

Learn the Auction House. It is essential. This game has a great economy. Sell Everything you find in there. Monsters you fight drop almost NO money.. so the AH is the way to go.

There are Quests that you get from talking to the various NPCs in Town.. they usually involve bringing them some Item.. you get some Money for this and Fame throughout the town.

Then there are Missions.. that you get from the Town Guard.. these give you somting called Conquest Points. The Missions also are where the Main Storyline of the Game comes in.

Always CHECK the monsters before you fight them... if they are EVEN MATCH.. you would get 100 XP..Even Match will somtimes kill you though.. so stick with Decent Challenges and Easy Prey.... It always stays like this....
ramble ramble................

It's alot to take in .... Good Luck

what are macros

Macro's are key combinations (like pressing ctrl and 1 at the same time) that are used as shortcuts for long commands. You can use them to cast spells you use often, or use abilities you use often. They get kinda complicated in how they're worded, so check out the guide here at Allakhazam. (Guides section's at the far bottom of the left column)

Also, it would be best to know a few of the shorthand terms people use in game. You might know some from chatrooms/AIM/etc, those like AFK (Away from keyboard), BRB (Be right back), and such.
Some other terms are unique to MMORPGs. The "Zone" is the area you're currently in. If someone tells you "to Zone", though, they mean run to the nearest boundry between zones. (Monsters can't pass between zones)

I'd also suggest looking up information of the different classes, and choosing one before you start playing. Make sure it loosely fits your race of choice, though you're allowed to choose any combination. (Galka White Mages really are hard to play) Remember, you can change your class, but not your race (short of making a new character). If you know you want to cast spells, Galkans aren't the best choice. If you want to beat the **** out of anything you see, being a Tarutaru might be hard.

And most of all, no matter what anyone tells you, HAVE FUN! You're paying to play the game, so don't get into the habit of doing something just because someone tells you it's the way something's done. Experiment, and find they way that fits you best.

It's a key combination like Alt+1 that you can push that will activate some ability/spell you have. An example of a typical Provoke macro for a Warrior

Line 1: /p Provoking the <t>!
Line 2: /ja Provoke <t>

That way, instead of having to fumble through 3 menus to provoke something, you just hold Alt and press "1" and it executes automatically. It streamlines things to the nth degree.

Also, be sure to get Signet. It'll make monsters that give you exp drop crystals. Stacks of 12 crystals can generally make you a pretty penny. You can get it from town guards near gates that have a title next to their name (it would be I.M. in Bastok, can't say for the others).

Best advice I can give you:

Listen to suggestions. Usually, everyone will be much more happy if you do.

Be polite. Being a nice person never hurt anyone, but being an A-hole will get you enemies. Fast.

Get someone that's willing to help you out to explain the in-game mechanics to you when you start. It's much easier if you know what you're doing from step 1 than to try to pick it up once you've played some.

Don't be afraid to take a day off to work on making money or just go sight-seeing. The people that are usually the rude ones are the people that only care about their level and their exp. Taking breaks every now and then will help to keep you sane.

Dont forget the quotation marks in line 2 Karsh.

/ja "Provoke" <t>

Provoke will work with out them. But good habit to use them always. Multiworded spells or abilities wont work without them.

This is one of the best pieces of advice. Reputation is everything in an MMORPG.
