I'm not yet in a serious linkshell, but I can't see giving up an inventory space for a pearl. I have 16 pieces of equipment, extra arrows, mithkabobs, and that leaves me with only ten spaces for drops (and the good drops rarely stack), plus 2 or 3 spaces for crystals.

What sort of benefit does being in an LS provide, other than having another group of people to talk to? I'm not looking for tangible effects, just some examples of how you feel being in an LS has helped you justify the space loss.

Well, I don't think I could have managed to get to 23 THF without the support of the people in my LS. Besides being good friends, My LS buddies supplied me with tons of support; helping me get the Keys to Khazam, and finishing the Final Rank 2 Dragon mission. None of these I could have possibly done on my own. It's hard enough trying to get a good party in Quifm, let alone a group of people who are specifially ready for a battlefield quest. And as you progress in the game, a reliable group of people you can trust is invaluable.

You want space in your inv? Get a Gobbiebag. :) A linkpearl to an awesome group is possibly the most valuable item you can get in FFXI.

Friends to help you do quests, missions and the like. ESPECIALLY friends that will help you do quests that give good items (i.e. BCNM fights) and will let you take the drop :)

Some quests that will require friends, most likely from a good LS: AF armor, BCNM.

Plus they might have an answer for your questions if you need to figure somethin' out.

It depends on the LS.

With my LS I can get into xp groups through my LS that are better then random pickup groups. I can get people together to do quests, missions and EFs.

If I am harvesting or doing something where I'll need inventory space I unequip my LS and leave it in my safe.

LS can be different things, depending on the nature of the LS.
A friend of mine is on one that is basically devoted to power-lvling; most of the users, apparently, started in October and have multiple classes over 30 by this point.
Some LS are devoted to RP, which is hard to do with the "regular" people running around.
The LS I'm on is, I imagine, like the majority in that is it just a group of people who rely on each other for information, assistance, and just familiarity. We've done missions, help each other with quests or keys or such, but mostly just pick on each other and keep the entertainment factor in the game.
I've already got my third gobbie bag quest (haven't finished it yet), so 1 slot in my inventory isn't a big cost for the gain of having that group of misfits always there in case you need them.

It is kinda lame that you need inv space for a linkpearl, but a link shell is defenantly worth it if you get one that has what you looking for.

In EQ my guild was powerful and high level, but we were still honourable and respectful and we didn't let just anyone in. It got to the point where I couldn't stand grouping because you would just get idiots, but grouping, or more often raiding with my guild was all I would do. I wish my guild had formed in FFXI, but there was just to many other games that caught peoples attention.

Just watch out for drama, it happens, two people start arguing in chat. If this happens, don't step into it, if you try to be nuetral they will only think you are backing the other guy. Once one person steps in, another will step in to even the scales, and pretty soon you have everyone yelling. Let the leader or officer type (whatever they are called in FFXI) deal with it, if they have to they will do some kicking, and if you step into the fray, you may find a foot shaped mark on your *** too.

i agree that a linkpearl is the most valuable item you can have!

Having a few good friends is invaluable in this game, IMO, especially when it's a linkshell of people close to you in level and play style/interests!

you'll always get a good PT this way, and you'll always have someone come back you up when a quest is just too much to solo..

can't imagine how playing without this LS would be now :P

I have to give my 2 cents here... My GF and i started a LS on Ifrit. I really enjoy having people to group with and to share info with. we have a leader and 5 "officers" who do the recruiting. think of it this way: with all the idiots in the game (quefim) isn't nice to have a filter? if the link is right, the people recruiting will be selective. Please, please. please DO NOT enter into a LS because some idiot is spamming every 30 seconds with "My linkshell is recruiting send me a /tell" I feel that you should party with someone and get a feel for them, before you invite them.
The flip of that is if you get a linkpearl, hang out and at least talk in in Linkchat a while. Give of yourself and see if the link is right for you. If not, then be glad they made a "Throw Away" button.
Our linkshell is awsome... we are a bunch of smack talkers who will, and have, run across the world to help you out. we don't take things too seriously and we have a lot of fun. It's just nice to get to know people, and have people get to know you

Thanks to my LS I have rank 5, thanks to my LS I'm about to get my AF lance for DRG, thanks to my LS I rarely have to buy gear (everyone donates gear and gil and we all share it) thanks to my LS I always have a link to advice, and thanks to my LS I almost never go groupless.

We all help eachother, we chat and we have fun! heck I don't think I'd bother playing the game without my linkshell friends.

very useful ... not necc. if you're just starting out since most players would be glad to give you tips to help you along.

But otherwise i was fishing in Windy and was missing a lot with my Comp. rod and wanted a Mithran ... none at the Windy AH (about 10k there but likely would have been more if there was one) and the guild wanted 25k for it.

I asked one of my LS buddies if they were near a AH and at the one in Jueno it was there ... and only 15k

Sold 4 stacks of moat carp that day :D (would have been more if i was a better fisher)

Being in a linkshell can be of tremendous benefit. For one, you have someone to ask questions to if you are really stuck on something. You have someone who can come assist you with quests if you need a partner. It's convenient also in that you can ask people to check prices at AH's in other cities for you if you are trying to compare prices. Quests and missions that require a lot of people to complete will be MUCH, MUCH easier to organize. My linkshell scheduled a Saturday for us all to go do San d'Orian mission 9 (Delkfutt's Tower). We formed a 3 party alliance and kicked butt. We had to fight the NM three times on the top floor to make sure everyone got the required key but every single one of us was awarded mission rank 4 that night. We even picked up a few new linkshell members that way (these were stragglers in the tower who were looking for groups to join to do this mission) and they are really great people too.

I hear that as your level gets higher and higher, eventually you won't be able to do many quests at all without organizing an entire group, or in some cases alliances, and I would hate to have to be standing out in the open trying to find that many strangers to group who were in the right place, right time, didn't have to log off mid-quest, weren't idiots, and were the same level range, working on the same quest as you.

I would strongly recommend looking for a good linkshell to join.
