One of My Biggest GripesFollow

OK.... The battle isn't going well and we decide to zone, or I'm trying to help someone yelling frantically for help while being chased by a mob, or I'M being chased by a mob. I want to cast cure, or maybe put the mob to sleep. Can I cast while I'm running? Nooooooooo...

People die, or I die, and kaos ensues. It would be SOOO GREAT if I could cast spells and move at the same time.

This would be the best thing to change on this game in my opinion. It could save lives and valuable exp.

So many times, people call for help, running by me and they die because I can't catch up, stop, and cure fast enough.

Anyone else? agree with me? or have gripe of your own?

I understand your feeling on this, but I think it kind of makes sense that you have to stand still to cast. (You also have to stand still for ranged attacks.)

If you think about it, casting a magic spell requires some sort of concentration, and the game enforces that by making you stand still.

Argh!! I'm with you Loralei! It just drives me bonkers when someone's screaming help and they run AWAY from you. Group members do that to me and then scream "Why didn't you heal me??" when they're dead on the ground. Duh. It makes me shake my head in dismay because I could have helped them, either by healing or engaging the monster myself, if only I could have caught up. Darn stubby Taru legs don't go far very fast. XD

So hear hear! It would be extremely very helpful to cast and run. I could see it as an advanced jobskill maybe? I mean, if you're not getting hacked at by a monster thus interuppting your concentration, why couldn't you run and cast at the same time?

Maybe they'll add these features in the future.

I agree Loralei, it is kind of annoying that you can't cast on the run. However, moving is a nice way to cancel high MP, longer casting spells you hit by accident ^_^;

I agree that casting should require some sort of concentration, and thus you should have to stand still.

However, in the same vein, I hate that monsters can run and attack (from a great distance, no less) and we can't do the same.

Hell, I can be practically ON TOP of the mob as it runs, and I still can't land a hit, all the while it's moving at the same pace as me, and smacking my WHM left and right.

Bah you got it easy enough in this game:P

I remember playing mage in Dark Age of Camelot, not only did you have to stand perfectly still to cast a spell, if mob was attacking you couldnt cast, simple as that.

At least in this game if mob attacking you can cast inbetween attacks, every class has to have there weakness, it sucks but compared to other MMORPG's the mages here have things pretty easy.

Damn youngins, also back in the day we had to walk up hill both ways to get to an area and we liked it, we liked it just fine:P

I'll tell you what I hate: the exact OPPOSITE!!! In EQ, you could duck to cancel the casting of a spell. The only way to do it in FFXI is to run around and hope you break your concerntration. Even on spells with 4+ second cast times, I can run the whole time and not intterupt casting!!! I'm used to having to stand still to cast, and I understand it is linked to concentration. But any half-decent caster should be able to stop speaking the words to a spell and thus not complete it...come on, give us a reliable way to stop casting a spell!!

[edit: perhaps if they made it so that you can cast while running, but at a greatly decreased chance of succeeding? Like you have a one in four chance of getting the spell off while running full tilt. Just a thought...]

I just find it crap how you have to hold still to use magic, yet there's some gobby's that "slide" towards you while casting a spell..

Pharadox, try sitting. ;) I used to get frantic trying to cancel a Teleport, running around in circles with the white bubbles coming out of my head, but now I just sit down, stand up and I'm all better. :)

Same thing with bows. I can have my shot cancelled for moving before I draw my bow, but then I stand there for 7 seconds before it tells me, or I can spin in circles and still fire.

How about some consistency?

Pikko, if that works consistently then you have yourself a new best friend. <3

Im going to get flammed for this:

Casting while running has to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard of. If anyone has played any type of magic user in any game before hand they would know that concentration is the key. Casting magic is not 6th grade mathematics.

If you were able to cast and run at the same time, imagine fighting a IT mob and have autorun on, you can cast until your MP runs out. the IT will chase you off course, final result you kill the IT easily or you run out of MP and Zone. Honestly people where is the challenge in that. I read all these ideas of making the game better but there has to be balance, everything can not be handled to you on a golden platter. The game would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO F*%?&ing BORING THEN!!!

/end rant

No flame from me here. :P This "gripe" to me is like saying they should make towns all one zone so that it's easier to quest. Or that crystals should be dirt cheap. haw!

I agree with Ikas on this one.

You're going to end up shooting yourself in the foot by requesting that casting spells while running be allowed.

Why?

Simple, for balance. If you are able to run and cast at the same time, it would make caster classes the ULTIMATE solo character. You could simply hit autorun, keep on nuking the mob till your out of MP and not take a single hit of damage.

Why would this work? Because in this game, you don't have to be facing the target in question in order to cast a spell on it.

This greatly imbalances the spell casters vs. everyone else. All melee users, as well as ranged, have to face their target in order to perform an attack. Thus, I can't run away from a target and continue to attack.

So, what would be the next logical step then? Enforcing the rule that you have to face your target in order to cast a spell on them (WHM note, this includes HEALING)...? :)

I really don't think you want that. :)

If they changed the way casting is now, The change would be spell targets would have to be in line of sight. Being able to cast at an enemy while he is behind you is retarded. Unable to see target comes up when a Mob goes around a wall/hill etc etc.

I wish they would change the camera settings, move your mouse a little to far in either direction and your viewing settings are F&*ked.
