General question about over all fixes.

When the tech's of Square come in I wonder if they fix the problem on paper first, work it out on a sub/side server or just wing it. Beeing as Big as square has become i would hope they have side servers. When i was on Guam we were poor and my bosses were lazy so we didn't have ne nore did we break out the paper and whipe up a flow sheet we would just wing it and see how it came out..... not that i understood that my self.

Arg, out of Netflix. Downtime sucks. But, I am not down on the provider.

I work on an online service (not a game). We test the hell out of it. We have 10 test clusters and one live cluster. Every change to the product hits a minimum of three of these clusters in succession. Even with all that testing, its surprising how many problems make it through to the live site.

Typically, after a big release, we make a list of problems, Create fixes, do some targeted testing to make sure they work. probably 99.99% the time this works out as we plan. But once in a while, one of those "little" fixes runs amok and interacts in some strange way with some part of the system. Users do things you could never guess in a million years.

An online game has got to be about the most complicated computer software system going. I mean think about how complex any operating system is. Now think about putting an online world on top of that OS.

I have played EQ, DOAC, Earth and Beyond (boring!), Planetside and Eve. So Far FFXI takes the cake for stability (Planetside being a close second.).

What I am rambling about? Well, if I have a point it's this: This is a damn fine game, and I don't fault Square-Enix for tonights downtime. Well, as long as they don't make a habit of it anyway.

They could have been hacked, and every new character was gettin 100k gil... You never know.

I actually heard a rumor about this from someone in my LS before we logged. That someone had figured out how to hack/exploit gil and that was one of the reasons for the downtime, doubt there's any truth to it, but seing you mention that reminded me of it.

Lokina, you were on Guam, when????? I'm there now! Lol, and I know EXACTLY what you mean. I'm military but still same situations all the time. Like today, somethin went wrong at the power plant, the ENTIRE ISLAND lost power. Brown tree snake. lol (Lokina would know what I'm talkin about). And it was down for a good 3-4 hours, was there ANY notice HELL NO. Did anyone know why? NOPE, all that was put out was, powers out, some problem at the plant, will be back up soon. If anyone REAAAALLY wanted to know they coulda went to the plant and asked, or called. Maybe you should do the same instead of wait for a message on their website.

If the emergency was so bad, I'm sure they aren't too worried about a website at the moment.

ok im just gonna drop my 2 cents before I call it a night..

I payed shadowbane for 6months guys and I had so much more probems trying to log in the game thanyou could imagine.. Square-enix are doing such a great job keeping over 25 server up and lag free that none of us should ***** at em. If you ever tried another mmorpg before this one, you should know what Im talking about. If they have emergency stuff to deal with, just let them do it, cause it will only get the game to a higher level. I played so much MUD's out here to know know what Im talking about. The fact that we're all paying 10$ a month doesnt give us the RIGHT to ***** at what they're doing at the moment cause they're only trying to make it more enjoyable for all of us. And here's a few things I want to share with you:

- I have never expreienced LAG on this game
- I have never been kicked off the game
- I NEVER had trouble logging on the game
(i know some of you had troubles lately but i got on first try)
- I never died due to SQUARE-ENIX server lag

- If you experienced any of the above, blame your ISP

One more word before i go to sleep.. There's nothing we can do about this downtime. and if you want to raise a class action law suit cause this 6 hours down time caused you major problems,.. i think you need a little time off. Take it easy, go out of your appartment to meet your friends, or call your parents that are probably wondering what you've been doing since you've bought that one KickAss game, and everything will be fine once you get back home.
Till then, i'll be waiting for you on Ifrit,

thanks,
Oh and forgive my Frenglish

Guess you guys never played Everquest. Server maintenance notice was called ingame. Like 10 minuit before maintenance they anounce it ingame. There are other times where you don't get any announcement and just kicks you out.

On occation where sudden disconection like the incident happening these 2 days happens in EQ aswell. And their usual response is:

"We are aware of the situation Blah blah blah. NO ETA AT THIS POINT"

Yup, no ETA is very common in there. That means server could be up in 1hour or 10 hours who knows... people couldn't know when they can actually go back to the game. At least in FF11 they give an ETA. In EQ, they never ever tell why did the server went off, nor the modification they did. At least Square enix is more informative.

hello,

I really think some of the people here a complecating things soo much, there are 2 types of problems when it comes with Online games...

1- The game it self
2- Playing it online

****
game bugs has nothing to do with this emergency maintenance.
i've been playing the game for almost a month now... i think they are doing an amazing job handling every little details, japanese ppl think about little things more than they think about God.

and this is why i think they are really really lost, the game is just so mixed up. you lvl something you found out it's not worth it, many jobs, many spells, many equipments, many items, many mission, many quests.... everything is just alot and so spesific. and you have to pick.

After picking what you need, here comes money....
if you want to fish, you have to see the guy's mom (who brought this idea up) looking at the moon btween 4-5 and 17-18 if she is there btween these giving hours but it's no moon you suck fishing, if you want to synth. you have to see his mom scratching with a crystal in a losy dark day...

ok lets lvl a thief... BOOOM!!! IT SUCKS AT EARLY lvls... it takes one day to lvl it to 7, so little money... THEY SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BEFORE FIXING THE SERVERS.

the most sucking thing i've ever seen in this game is the shops
(all of us know the reasons) THEY SUCK, THEY SUCK "period"

and all of this just to make sure we are stuck in this for ages... DAMN IT trying to lvl up a single guild skill to 15 takes like 2 damn weeks.
***************************************************************
I dont think handling thousands of ppl at one moment is an easy job. they are doing GREAT with the online part.

anything else is just amazing "period"

Alright, I was looking and i didn't see a thread about this, but as you may have noticed, Final Fantasy 11 is now down for "Emergency Maintenance" once again for 6 hours MINIMUM of maintenance. The part that really struck me is the emergency maintenance notice was posted on the official site at 8:34 PM and the server went down at 9:00 PM. Am I the only one that thinks that this makes Square-Enix look a little... I don't know what's the word for it... incompetent maybe? Let me know what you think.

this is nothing bro. there are other games where the servers can barely stay up, games that have been out close to a year *cough shadowbane cough*. games like that where the problems that cause these issues do not get fixed...

guys this game is probably the most error/problem free mmo there is. dont go all whining until you have played other mmos where the downtime, server crashes, bugs, exploits are 100x worse, and i do mean 100x worse. in the 2 months i have played this game this is the first time the server has been down. thats bloody amazing.

heh... if you think this is bad.... you should play Ragnarok.
I was a beta tester and played it when the went pay to play. They have no customer service at all. No updates on sites when things go down... they never answer your emails....ban you for no reason....and for however long they want....Good game just horrible service.

I would rather pay the extra $ and play FFXI. At least they have common decency to actually tell you the server is going down and give you enough time to get out of where you are and try to provide you with an estimate of when it will be up. Whereas Ragnarok would say "O yah, servers shutting down, you have 5 minutes. We wont tell you the problem and we dont know when it will be up."

Well I checked the notices on the main site, and the work is done... except they're having trouble with logging in. Then they fixed that. And then....they're doing more work, and we don't know how long it's gonna be. ><

Edit: Scratch that. 6 hours. I'll just go to bed, I guess.
