Low FPS with Radeon 9800 ProFollow

#1 Jan 20 2004 at 7:19 PM Rating: Decent
i just upgraded from a GF4 to a Radeon 9800 Pro and my fps in FF hasnt changed a single bit really. It's still really low around 20-30 in any area, i run in 1024x1024 and other settings are on default, i just cant understand why it isnt smoother.
My pc specs are pretty good aswell
AMD 2200XP
1024 DDR 2700 Ram
SB Audigy

Defragged HD, no viruses, errors etc. no probs with the pc.

Anyone else dissapointed with performance ingame?

I would imagine a great deal of your perceived problems with the game's FPS are due to the terribly unoptimized FF11 engine.

I personally am running a rockin' setup (including at Radeon 9800 Pro), and I've never seen the game above maybe 40-50 FPS. This is on a computer that gets 100+ FPS in Unreal Tournament 2003 at 1024x768.

It's pretty clear to me that Square did an "absolute minimum" job of porting the PS2 engine over to the PC. As such, common features such as full-screen antialiasing, the fading in of popup polygons on the horizon, and high-resolution textures are nowhere to be found. My guess is the engine is where the problem lies, not with your computer.

In the end, I don't think there's a whole lot you can do.

yep ... especially since it's a DX8 game

Pax Payne2 which looks very impressive runs killer frame rates

FF11 the 30fps cap is poopy, and if you're using higher than 1024x768 resolution i really reccommend using the higher textures outlined here

800 is really for 1600x1200 resolution (in my experience) even though it improves the sharpness of those further away. I use 500 (400 is the highest choice I was given) for 1280x1024 and noticed a big improvement in IQ (less jaggies and sharper picture).

That being said i can't wait for a R420 or a new NVidia card

I'm also using the Radeon 9800 Pro. When I was running it at 1024x1024, I would notice my fps dropping to 20 around high lag areas like the Auction House, but outside of there it would be fine at 29/30fps.

So, I switched to 1600x1200 using the above posted method, and noticed no performance hit at all. Still 20 by AH, 30 anywhere else. It definitely looks amazing now. It'll take a while to get used to the tiny text, but you'll learn to love it.

Oddly enough, in high hunting zones (like the tower outside qufim), I can maintain 25 fps or so. I figure that's pretty nice since I can sometimes see four groups battling at once.

P4 2.6, 512 ddr400 ram, radeon 9800 pro

ok, thanks for replies. i ran FRAPS and it is indeed capped at 30 fps, i'll try it in a mo with v-sync turned off see if anything improves.

Download FRAPS from www.fraps.com. Will show FPS in any DirectX game.

why is everyone complaining about 30 fps ? that's plenty for this kind of game. consider the awesome animations, well articulated monsters, animated terrain, ambient lifeforms, awesome water, weather, high res textures, insane draw distance, tons of different magic effects, killer lighting with day/night cycle, volumetric effects, etc. add that to the fact that there is absolutely NO twitch involved in playing and ... seriously, what does it matter if you only get 30 fps ? and capping it at 30 fps means that it will stay at 30fps, assuming the rig can handle it.

its so annoying when people who know nothing about graphics come onto forums to ***** about an engine's framerate, and they don't consider all the things it CAN do. fps is not everything to a game, and to a MMORPG it's next to meaningless. even most shooters are totaly playable if they maintain a steady fps.

*ahem* i think i know a bit about graphics and graphic engines. i was unaware that FF was ported from the PS2 version, therefor the 30fps cap.
I was only asking because i just bought a new gfx card which cost a bloody lot of money and i was expecting a little more, considering i know what to expect with cards.
You make some good points about the game engine physics, allthough come on...they're not that amazing! have you even looked at water effects?

Femur, the only thing FFXI has going for it is good animations. Frankly, if you've played any DX9 games, you'll realize that using DX8 because S-E is too lazy and opted for a direct port is simply ridiculous. Even though we all have 9800P's and 5950's, it doesn't mean squat because S-E is too lazy to augment the code for PC users. The textures are crap, everything is jaggy because even though you can turn up overlay res, the gfx are maxed at 1024 and the game refuses to support AA. These are problems that customers simply shouldn't have to deal with, because it isn't that much a waste of manpower to get these problems fixed.

I like the game, and it does seem to be the best MMO around for now, but when World of Warcraft comes out... S-E is going to be left in the dust, and that's an understatement. The game simply isn't up to snuff.

lazy ? pfft.

dx9 or not, 30 fps is plenty for this game.
