HI
I'm trying to help a friend (WARRIOR 20) get a skull for the subjob quest. I already have mine a high-level got it for me.
We are in the mines coming from the Konschtat Highlands entrance we turn left at the first intersection and kill ghouls at the next open section. We can't go further into the zone is dangerous for just the two of us).
We must have killed maybe 20 now and no skull, the ghouls are tough or even, if we see a IT we ignore.
My subjob is a thief, does using the steal ability help or hinder getting the skull?
Do we need to go further in?

Hey, I just recently pretty much went through the same thing. Friends and I had been hunting ghouls for some 6+ levels (13-19) trying to get skulls, killing some 40 or so ghouls in that time with not a single drop. So, believe me I feel your pain.
I must say, having as many thieves as you can in the party will help immensely.
Using steal really won't do anything at all. It'sa prett ymuch unrelated. What would help the drop is the job trait treasure hunter, and you'd need to make thief your main job for that to be in effect.
You don't have to go in any farther than you were at the time. It's not going to make a huge difference. Low level ghouls are just as likely to drop it as high level.

There's a couple other spots where members of my LS found the skulls.
One is in the Valkrum Dunes (at nite)...anywhere really, except higher chances of drops are near any groups of palm trees (kill all nite bats to get the ghouls to spawn).
And on the Burburu (sp?) penninsula outside of Mhara (take the boat from Selbina to Mhara...wait til nite when the tall rocks begin to glow. Fight ghouls after you take a right turn out of Mhara and go near the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

That's interesting. My party killed four ghouls last night and got three Magicked Skulls and a sack of poison flour. All of us were working our advanced jobs, so none of us needed the skulls. It was a shame we had to dump them. We all felt kind of guilty and decided to stop pulling them when they popped.
In west sarutabaruta ... in the Ruins to the northwest
at location g-7 there are about 5 ghouls spawning at any 1 time. They are also the most dangerous thing there (some decent or even Gobs from what i remember)
a THF level 15+ would help the drop rate on the majick'ed skull
try and have the lowest level person take the last swing that kills the ghouls for the thing to drop

the spot you are in at the mines is fine. ghouls are ghouls. there isn't anything about certain ghouls in that mine dropping more. though there is some mention that ghouls in the dunes seem to drop more often.
it's chancy...i was the thief that was called up on to join such a group. group said, if i helped them they would help me get my skull. so i was in another zone but joined that group. before i arrived to the mines, one skull dropped after about 5 kills. once i joined, it was another 2.5 hrs before another skull dropped. i had a lvl 30 paladin, and 60+ blm and 60+ whm helping. so trust me we killed a lot of ghouls during that time.
so even with a thief, you may find yourself taking a while.
When I was farming for my subjobe quest, I got mine in Gusgen mines. Took about an hour or two.
Recently, I was in Shakrami Maze (NE corner of Tahrongi Canyon) doing the Dragoon Quest and killed a few random Ghoul's along the way. About the fifth or sixth one gave me a skull.
Damn shame I can't give it to anyone. I'm hanging onto it in case some patch comes out (incredibly doubtful, but what the hell, it's only one slot) that allows trading of EX items.
