Wayyy too expensive to buy crystals and way too time consuming to farm them. Look at sheep leather, uses a dark crystal. Ive saved all my crystals that ive ever found and i have 7 dark crystals. Im lvl15. Sheep leather is used in a lot of recipes and can be made at lvl 0 leathercraft yet the dark crystals are about 500 each. Thats ridiculous. The frist few levels should use the more common crystals and the higher level skills should use the more rare crystals.

Its takes money to make money. I spent a good 20,000 gil (even including the things I made and sold) before I got to the point where I could make a profit cooking.

Fishing is probably the easiest skill to make money with, and most lower level people choose it first.

Be more selective in the monsters you fight. If you know that you want to take up Leathercrafting, your main targets should be Rabbits (Rabbit Hide x 5 + Grass Thread = Rabbit Mantle); Sheep (Sheepskins for leather); and Funguars (Dark Crystals).

Knowing what items monsters drop is absolutely key to being a successful craftsman. I try to (but can't always) farm all the items and crystals necessary for the items i am attempting to craft.

I have to agree. I haven't quite figured out the crafting thing yet...maybe it's just something that you are not supposed to start getting into until you are much higher level and/or have more disposable income to work with. I enjoy fishing a lot, and I have been working on my clothcraft. It's fun, but I feel like I'm either crafting or adventuring. It's sort of two seperate things that are hard to do in conjunction.

I'd like to work on fishing, woodworking, goldsmithing, and harvesting stuff to work with. But it's tough to keep enough room in a mog house for sets of equipment for a main job, a sub job, and one or two crafting skills, let alone more. Most of my friends have given up on crafting because they need the space and resourses (gil) for other things. Maybe that's how its supposed to be. A little dissapointing though...I guess I'll have to restrict myself to fishing only, and see if I can adventure at the same time. :P

You'll only start breaking even around lvl 20 with crafting, and actual profit comes only when you get into the 40's. If they made it so you could start making a profit right away we'd have a screwed economy like Star Wars Galaxies where everyone has a few million within 2 months and nothing to spend it on.

I only lvl my crafting when I have a spare 50k laying around and nothing to buy for a while. What I've done is look at the chart and find somthing cheap to make that's within or somwhat above my current skill lvl. Then I go out and find the componants at a shop (never the AH, unless it's crystals or it's cheaper). I'll wait for the full moon, and craft on a day that matches the crystal I'll be using, then I go to the guild and buy the advanced assistance and start burning up my supplies.

Also, keep an eye on your skill, because it caps every 10 points and you have to pass a test to uncap it (you can just buy the item they ask for, you don't have to actually make it)

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

So because you can't afford it, there's a problem with it? The economy is steady because of the way things have been set up.

Thanks for the tips. :) That sounds like a good way to go about it. I'm sure I'll eventually plan fishing trips the same way, find a good moon, put on all the fishing +1 gear, get the right rod and bait, and go out specifically to fish. That could be fun in it's own way.

The problem isnt that i cant afford it, its that i shouldnt have to pay 1200 for the wind crystals needed to make arrow wood lumber. The cost of the items needed should go up with level not start out costing a fortune.

Once again....choose the monsters you fight selectively.

You want wind crystals? Fight Bats. There are plenty of bats in Ronfaure at night and even more down in Ranperre's Tomb.

Ultimately, I do think Squenix wants you to wait a bit for crafting. But if you want to start this early in the game, do what i said and learn which monsters drop what items. It's not that hard; generally a family of monsters will drop the same crystals and items. i.e: all Bats drop Wind Crystals and most bats will drop fangs and wings.

Okay, so think about it from the other end. You DON'T do any crafts, yet you need money. You work your butt off getting that stack of Wind Crystals. Why? Because they're worth 1200 gil and is a good way for you to earn some cash. It's certainly not fair to those who are doing the dirty work for you to not get the rewards for it. If you're going to complain about price go freaking farm them yourself.

There's two suggestions that I can make for your moneymaking woes.

#1: Simply wait until you've gotten your advanced job to start crafting (which is what I did) when you'll have lots of money from selling off the mid-level gear you'll never use again.

#2: Instead of perhaps farming the exact ingredients you need, find something easy to kill that drops something that sells extremely well. I can't really make any recommendations, since I avoid San D'Oria (and Windurst, for that matter) like the plague, but I'm sure there's some friendly San D'Orians on here that can give advice.

Don't farm regular mobs for crystals, that's what elementals are for! With a thief sub, you usually get 2 clusters for every elemental kill - that's 24 crystals total. If you have a mage job, you can start farming elementals pretty early (25ish?), though as a physical attacker you'll need to be a few levels higher. Zones like La Theine and Konschtat almost always have weather, and the elementals spawn in the same places predictably.

Tahrongi is very good for Wind and Earth clusters. I once got 15 Wind Clusters in one day. (I was lucky though, no one was camping)

You picked a poor example, for two reasons.

One: Dark crystals are one of the highest priced crystals, leatheworking also being one of the highest priced crafts early on.

Two: You can make money wiht level 2 leatherworking using dark crystals. Quite a bit of money.

I personally think anytime is good to start with crafting, usually people between 1-30 have an average of 10-15k if they've saved, and it can be put into a craft. If you run out of money, go fishing, or go level up a bit until you save up another 3-5k or so. You can also hunt for items to farm too for gil, ain't too hard.

Also, it's good to only focus on one trade skill, because it's best if you get it to a high enough skill so you can make profit, however there are other reasons why you might want to include 2 tradeskills, such as culinary skills and fishing, because they work well with each other and are relatively easy to do.

I'm taking about a week or so just right now (at lvl 20) to raise my tradeskills, so I'll have plenty of money for later levels, mind you I'm not racing to level up like everyone else is.

Spent almost 400k on alchemy so far.. Current level? 34... Extremely expensive, but I'm having fun leveling it so I can't complain.
