Roleplaying in FFXI?Follow

#1 Jan 20 2004 at 12:35 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all!

I just picked up FFXI recently and was wondering how much roleplay goes on in this game? I am a long-time roleplayer and gamer-girl and was seeking other roleplayers here if they exist.

What is everyone's experirnce in this game so far? Much roleplay happening, or is it sparse?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope to see some folks around...

At least on the seraph server roleplaying is sparse,
and the only roleplaying I do see is usually by
tarutarus. I'm trying to find a roleplaying linkshell
(kind of like a guild) on the seraph server, and
if that doesn't work I will try to find a roleplaying
linkshell on ANY server, and if that doesnt work,
I'll likely end up at NWN.

Havent seen any RPing Linkshells. Im sure there are some out there.

They shoulda been like with Dark Ages of Camelot and put up a server in which you have to Role Play or you get booted :P Prob never happen in this game.

The best way to go if your really really into that sort of thing is to put post up such as this one with your in game name and server and just ask anyone interested to contact you and form up a Linkshell that is all about Roleplaying. Organize it yourself or to steal a line from a movie "If you build it they will come".

Anyways the best of luck to you, hope you get a Role Playing Linkshell, of course if i was Roleplaying for real i would be doing everything i could to thwart your attempts at having a good time because im EVIL, just not as evil because i left my bumbling lackey back in DAoC.

I am a long time roleplayer and think its very fun. I roleplayed on such games as Medievia (MUD) Daoc and NWN. But I have never seen anyone roleplay in this game, maybe they thought they were roleplaying but not in my opinion. Of course everyone has their opinion on what is roleplaying but I have pretty high standards, of course it doesnt mean I'm "righteous" or whatever, I realize some people either aren't as imaginative as others or just see it a different way.

Now that I think of it, I've seen one person roleplay a bit. I myself dont always stay in character, but when I do I roleplay as a swashbuckling pirate type from Norg. The other person I saw was roleplaying along with me as another pirate. Sometimes my brother does as well, he's also a pirate.

It is hard and inefficient to roleplay in this game, given the number of game characteristics that are unexplainable while still being in character, without someone going "WTF??" Then theres just plain idiots, theres alot of those as per usual. Then people who could also be grouped in the "idiot" group, they aren't actually mentally deficient so much as they think that roleplaying is some weird sickness that some people need to be cleansed of by "getting a life" or "getting a girlfriend."

Well I'm sure you've seen em all.
I am in two linkshells on Bismarck, my original one, was just a group of RL friends playing the game, now we have a few people we met from within the game too, its a rather small linkshell of about 10 people total, all roleplayers in the past but do not exactly do so often in FFXI (for stated reasons)

Then the other linkshell, is strictly an RP'ing linkshell named "Ridir" (Gaelic word) started by a friend of mine. All roleplayers in there but I can't say I stay in that linkshell very often.

Either, could use a person that likes to roleplay and wants to encourage others to do so. Need some initiative. If you haven't started yet and are looking for a server to join and possibly some people to RP with, we would be honored to help. Send me a message or post here if anyone is interested. I can get a world pass easily enough.

Add me to friend's list also if you so desire, and message me through their if you prefer. The name is the same as the one I am posting with.

Good luck in finding roleplay here.

It is, in my experience, very rare to see players OPENLY Role-Playing, i.e. talking in character, /kneel-ing before important NPC's, talking about that political policies of the Bastokan President. If it exists at all it is in Linkshell format, and it stays there.

The roles most people ever take to heart are the role of Tank, Melee, Healer, Nuker.

Adding flavor text to some macro'd actions can help, but it is always a horrible thing when it is on any macro that is constantly used. Flavor text works nicely for non-Samurai Weaponskills, and rarely used powerful spells.

And yeah, talking in -taru speak doesn't count if you are talking about Real World subject, nor does Hot Mithra cyber /lick-ing count. I can't picture a Xena warrior catwoman race sitting around trying to get laid all the time.

Well just give it time people. There are a whole lot of MMORPG noobs here and it'll take time to adjust. I for one wont really start role playing until I've accomplished more in the game and have a powerful character. I think it'll take some time but leaders will eventually gain fame and people will follow their lead. Once I am an "uber" 70RDM/35DRK and whatnot I will mount campaigns to take territories for my country (Bastok). I don't think I'll be particularly flowery about it either but hey that's MY character right? :) Some people have the attitude that role playing in a game like this is for people who need to get a life. But if you do it right and people are having fun then you might just gain your own following. Right now it seems that the lions share of powerful characters are Japanese so just give it a little time for more English speaking power characters to come along and start some trouble ;)

Thanks to all who replied, the info is much appreciated. :)

Litany, indeed, I am that same woman. I haven't been involved in mod-making for Morrowind in almost a year now, but I am still always amazed at the number of people who recall my work. I am glad you enjoyed it. :)

As for roleplaying...well, I have been gaming and roleplaying for more than 20 years now (ever since the first incarnation of D&D in the late 70s), so I know how it goes. I guess I will just do it and gather some friends who roleplay and hope it catches on in FFXI. I did that in Star Wars Galaxy, and ended up building the biggest and best roleplayer city on our server...so you just never know where a little roleplay will lead.

All three of my characters in game are on Valefor server, if any roleplayers are out there reading. My main is Kissa, a level 6 mithra warrior in San d'Ornia.
