Some people just shouldn't exist:

On Shiva, this guy Syth asks me if I want 300,000 gil. I say "Well since you twisted my arm, sure", figuring he was a high lvl guy wanting to help out newbies. I investigate him, and he's a lvl 13 War, no subjob. So then he starts telling me that he can duplicate items. Since I'm pretty sure it's a scam, and if it IS possible I KNOW it's against the EULA, I asked him how he does it. Big mistake. His reply is "you go to the website, dumba**".

Next, I tell him that I want nothing to do with him, and that I'm just fine playing the game like it was intended to, which results in a "fine, your loss you stupid b***h" (or something to that effect). So then he starts spamming me with tells filled with swears and insults. I stop replying, until he asks me how old I am. I told him I was 15 (a lie, actually 22), figuring that he'd stop using innapropriate language to a kid, but then the tells continued for a few more minutes, none of which I replied to.

At this point I petitioned a GM, and he explained the /blist function to me, and that he'll investigate the duping patch he claims to have (probably a standard reply, as I doubt one actually exists). That blacklist is great, problem solved.

I don't really mind swearing, as my Linkshell swears quite a bit. All the original members are real life freinds, and if you don't like it you can always throw the LS away (having a love for dark humor is a prerequisite for our shell). Even so, I would not send a stranger tells for several minutes full of curse words. This case is exceptionally odd seeing as how he's trying to cheat, in one way shape or form, and there's probably other people out there that will give him al their items...

Has anyone else heard about or been a vicim of this scam? If a "duping" program ever surfaces, I hope all users of it will be castrated and deported (vote for me for president!).

And Syth, if you're reading this: refusing to cheat doesn't make me "gay", or a "little b***h" or anything else except an honest man trying to have a little fun in his spare time.

You did the right thing by calling a GM, unfortunatly, that's about all you can do in that situation, other than blacklisting him, and staying away from him. If you see him around anymore, make a note to either petition a GM again, or e-mail SquareEnix directly. I don't know how much help the latter will do, but sometimes the only way to get things done is to go to the main source. And no, wanting to play the ggame the way it was intended doesn't make you "gay". It makes him an idiot 13 year old, (considering they're the only ones who use the word gay as an insult.)

This was obviously a scam man, and i would spread the guys name around on your server as a scammer if I were you. Someone new to MMORPG's might fall for something like that. Just try and make sure you bring up his name in each and every party you group with at some point. It could just be a second char, but if he gets caught (ie. being monitored by a gm) I *think* they ban all accounts related to the credit card the one account is registered under so bye bye scammer.
I laugh at people like this instantly, but new people that are greedy and want to cheat may lose all there items/character to something like that. If he said it was a patch, it was probably a keylogger that you were suppose to run prior to starting FFXI which would send a log file to a specified email address or upload to a website or something along those lines.
So which is worse? The scammer or the attempted cheater? All subjective opinion i suppose. Some may say you get what you deserve in a case like this which is partially true. But most of the blame lies with the one providing the temptation in the first place.

Oh and regarding the gay comment... I say it all the time in RL and I'm 28 with kids so...

Was the GMs only response to explain blist to you? Cause if that were me the GM would get an ear full if that was all he had to say. I hope he at least said he was going to give offending player a warning.

The GM also said he would look at the game logs and see what he could do, which I also figure is a standard response, then he explained the /blist. He didn't mention a Warning, but it might be implied in a case such as this.

I dunno, whatchagonna do? My word verse his I suppose as far as the /tells are concerned. I already warned my LS of this foolish mortal.

Thanks for the support/feedback Allakhazamites, or is it "Allakhazamians"?

Im pretty sure that /tells are logged to. There is no expectation of privacy for player interaction.
