Clarification

After further consideration, we have come to the conclusion that the previous news item on the use of third-party tools ("Warning About Using Third Party Tools") contained some ambiguous information.

Therefore, we would like to issue the following clarification regarding character deletion:

As a policy, we never delete a character as a penalty in any event, regardless of the circumstances involved.

We hope this makes our position clearer, and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

So this doesn't necessarily mean that you should use third-party utilities, but they point out what we already know, that if you exit FFXI improperly due to a third party app, they're no more responsible for restoring your character data than if you accidentally hit the Windows key and lost your character data.

Ill make a wager that these "unintentional deletions" cease to become a problem.

Warning About Using Third-Party Tools

As previously mentioned, when playing FINAL FANTASY XI, use of third-party applications is strictly prohibited.

Regarding the use of third-party applications, we are receiving constant reports about unintentionally deleted characters. Using these applications can inadvertently delete your characters.

Therefore, not only can your account be penalized, but your cherished characters may be deleted as a result. This is a reminder to refrain from using such applications.

*It is possible all characters can be deleted for use of third-party applications. This is not any kind of technical issue, and we do not delete characters as a penalty without informing the player in question first.

Now this should shut alot of people up.

The point is that their clarification simply re-stated that they do not delete characters as a penalty if they catch you using third-party apps. Their original news article clearly states that they do not delete characters as a penalty, but the wording is somewhat ambiguous.

What Xenuear is getting at, I think, is that the original post was pretty clear. But a lot of people don't take the time to read and digest what was said. If you take more than a cursory glance, it's clear.

People HAVE lost characters, but the loss is due to some sort of third-party app either ******** with the data stream and corrupting the character, or malevolent code simply deleting people's characters.

Their clarification was for that point only. The use of third-party apps is still in violation of the EULA. If you get caught, they will ban or suspend your account.

Caveat Emptor.

Thought i would start post off by saying that i wish beyond words that we had ability to alt+tab out. And that what imma say might sound harsh, rude and unfair but its just the way it is and though i dont like its i just wanted to push across the point that as crappy as it is its the truth.

The simple fact that ive tried in other posts to get across but people dont seem to understand is that by agreeing to the EULA everytime you log on your pretty much saying that your agreeing to play by Squares rules.

Square can do what it wants period. No matter how idiotic, unfair, no matter if there is nothing mentioned specifically about it in EULA, NO MATTER WHAT.

There nice and simple, if you wanna argue it your wrong. The fact is that 500,000 people pay 12.95 a month to play, they would never ban every single person that uses 3rd party app or something that they dont like. They have more people joining everyday, if they decided to they could ban up to 1-2k people just to put the fear of God into us and discourage 3rd party apps and really not feel any financial pinch.

Ive been in other games where this has happened and i have warned people beforehand and i always hear arguments like well they can ban me for something that silly, or they wont ban people cause they dont want to lose money, or its not fair. All good arguments but the simple fact is that Square can do what it wants no matter what, and for some weird reason if they feel that your doing something they dont like they can temp ban or perma ban you and there is NOTHING i repeat Nothing you can do, cant state this more clearly. People dont seem to get this until they get penalized in some way. Some people just have to get burned first i guess.

I dunno about Square cause they new, hopefully they are cool with it but ive been through my fair share of MMORPG's and seen people banned for stupid stuff, not lotsa people but they always go after a select few to scare people from doing what they dont like. I dont like it, I dont agree with it but thems the facts.

I've pressed it a couple of times to save my character but was I just lucky or is there some bug or something that could erase my character data?? Anyone have any info??

Yes, you can lose your character whenever you log out of the game improperly, i.e. hit the Windows key or Alt+Tab. I don't know the specifics but I know people who have had this happen to them.
