Which one do you use/prefer and why. I use a keyboard now but have plenty of PS2 controllers laying around. Thanks

Hmm another one of "these" posts. Compact keyboard, I use it because it is easy to use, not many people have tried it, it's more like other PC MMORPG setups with WASD and camera controls for your left hand.

What do you mean "these" posts? I use compact keyboard too but see a lot of people with ps2 controllers and just wanted to know why.....that's all.

I don't use a controller because I don't feel like putting it down to type. I'm used to the keyboard interface now, as clumsy as it is. Using compact also.

I use a gamepad (Saitek P880) and I love it over the Keyboard. It feels more like the FF games I've played before on PS and they Keyboard makes my wrist and hands sore from playing for 6 hours or so. If you want to use a controller buy the adapter for your PS2 controller and try it out, the worst that could happen is you spent $20- on something you can probably sell to someone else.

I have to tell you all, IMHO the Saitek P880 rocks! only $20 to start. I came from 4 years in EQ, so I definatly know how to use the keyboard. The gamepad is soo nice. Only thing is you have to tweak it to your likeing before you play. its got the D-Pad for moving, the left analog stick for menu's the right for looking(so nice in dangerous areas to be able to look left and right easily while running forward) and Hotkey Control and Alt's on the top. then the 6 buttons... it's beautiful. Also with a gamepad its easier to 2 box. I play with my girlfriends acct when she's at work sometimes. Nice Red/wht & Blk/wht combo. i hope this helped everyone.

Do you not talk to anyone while you play? I talk to people all the time, LS, /tells, party, etc. I like being "over my keyboard" all the time. It's not a chore, my arms dont hurt, I dont get all uncomfortable or anything like that. It's just more efficent for me to use a keyboard (compact) because I can easily do so much more with it.

Compact Keyboard setup. "WADS" for movment, TAB for targeting, directional Keys for camera movment, and the keypad for movement/targeting/etc when my left hand is suffering from RSI using the "WADS" and pressing ALT/CRTL+1..9 all the time.

That inconjunction with macros and you have the most efficient and powerful input device avaliable on the market for FFXI.

Using a controller is like beating your monitor with a wetsock.

Before I got this game, I thought I'd end up having to use a controller because I've always had trouble moving around in games using the keyboard. But I've found the controls to the game rather simple with the keyboard ... it only takes a few days to get used to.

I also like to chat a lot, so using a controller wouldn't be too good of an idea for me. I'd end up having to put the controller down every 2 seconds to type ... and then I'd never get any leveling done. (Not that I get much done in the first place ... )

After about a month of using the "Compact Keyboard" method I decided to purchase a PSX to USB adaptor, using a PS2 controller. It is AWESOME. The game has an entirely new feel, no pun intended. I agree with what was said earlier, its nice to be able to sit back with my elbows down instead of being perched above the keyboard.

I am sorry but I need my keyboard short cuts. Why slow down your actions with a controller.. right?

With a Black Mage as my first serious character, the only realistic option to me was a keyboard. In a party, I simply could not get by without my macros available to me.

Even as a simple warrior, I can't realistically expect to pull and fight efficiently with the limited buttons on a controller, so again, the choice is clear.

Don't get me wrong, having a controller/joystick in my hands has always made me enjoy my games more. As a Atari/Nintendo child, it simply feels more natural and I'm usually willing to accept poorer performance for the tactile pleasure of a good controller in my hands. But whenever someone in my party mentions they're using a controller, I don't expect much out of them.

PSX to USB game adapter at Radio shack for 10 bucks. It says PSX but works with PS2 controllers. And whats with all this BS about putting it down to type and if you have a controller it limits you from typing. I sit 3 inches away from my Keyboard and when I type I just drop the controller on my lap and type away. All this talk about you wont type as much or your to far from the keyboard to put your PS2 controller on your lap and reach 3 inches in front of you is total BS.

I played for a long time using the keyboard (for a good month or so) then decided to get a SAitek (same controller previously mentioned.) Yes, it is great. You can use the program that comes with the controller to program any key combo into that controller. Lets say you wanted a button that would /attack. You could set that up so that at a press of a button, it would /attack.

But seriously, it's all about preference. I came from EQ and lots of FPS (First Person Shooter) so I figured that I would like the keyboard. But I decided to give the controller a chance, and I loved it. I still use my keyboard for chatting and some other stuff, so I'd say I use both... But the controller more.

Anyway, if you have an extra $10.00, give the controller a try... Besides, the PS2 controllers rumble.... =D
