I have cable internet of course and im with a very stable, dependant provider. My PC is very recently formatted (within last 2 weeks) and has just been defragmented. I wonder, what is making it lag? here are is a list of the stuff inside my PC:

Every one i know is laging. I'm running on Cable x2 from my provider and have a computer built just to play FFXI, and still i lag. I think it has to do with the fact the servers are over in Japan.
#4 Jan 17 2004 at 6:02 AM Rating: Decent
are you sure theyre in japan? this IS the usa version of the game im playing.. but i live in australia hehe.. but still, with cable it shouldnt lag. i have been told i have a bad graphics card.. i thought gforce 4 was good? i got a gforce 4 MX 440 or something.. any more suggestions on what i should do to make run faster?

nobody else gonna answer me??

Hey,

Everything on your system specs seems pretty good, the only thing I would suggest is investing in a new video card (which you probably already knew). You could pick up something much faster (like geforce fx 5200 or 5600, maybe higher end ATI radeon card) for reasonably cheap and it would make the difference.

I don't think anything else on your system would be a factor in the choppiness, especially if you are on high speed internet.

And yes, all servers for the game are in Japan, though I've seen less lag in this game running on servers across the world than from ones that have servers in North America

Perhaps because you're running FFXI off the D:\ drive?

I am not positive but have two suggestions

1. When I played Morrowind it wouldn't play well on any other drive besides C or the active drive with OS. Maybe that could be it.

2. Try upgrading the video card. There are other posts here where people with better video cards are only getting 30-40fps.

Here are my specs and I don't have any lag at all. Everything runs very smooth.
AMD AthlonXP 2800+ Barton
512mb daul channel corsair ddr 400
80gig Hitachi SATA HD
Gainward Geforce fx 5600 ultra fc (golden sample)
Cable Internet average connection is 2.5mb

Hope this helps.

Technically speaking, it should make no difference which harddrive you run it off of (as long as the other harddrive is decent, ie: a 7200rpm drive, etc.)

Typically it will actually run better if its not on the same drive as the OS, and particularly if it's on its own IDE controller altogether.

In other words, thats not the problem... Go with the video card.

It's not from the servers, whoever said "everyone i know is lagging", is lieing.

I would say its your graphics card. Not that it is bad, but for some reason, FFXI doesn't like some GeForce cards.

I just got a new computer with a GeForce FX 5200 installed, and I was REALLY choppy. I switched to my old GeForce Ti4600, and it worked perfectly fine.

Probably your graphics card.

It may depend on what server you're on. I've noticed that the servers with more people (like Garuda) are laggier than other servers with less people. I never witnessed lag until I went onto the Garuda server.

Well I experience the occassional graphical sputter as well.

Running Intel P4 2.6C HT
1 GIG DDR 400 Memory
40 gig HDD 7200 RPM WD
120 gig HDD 7200 RPM WD
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro

I never had issues running the game on my Athlon XP system, 2500+ barton Oc'd to 2.3ghz. But this intel system seems to run the game like crap.

To clarify an earlier question for you; yes, all servers are in Japan. Also, there are 2 different kinds of lag. Video lag and server lag. Video lag is when your FPS drops way down and everything is choppy. With server lag things arent choppy, but more like skippy. You or another toon are in one spot one moment and then another the next. Or, everything may seem like its all stopped even though you are still swaying and the scenery is acting normal. Another sign of server lag. Yes, server load does affect server lag. But your problem sounds like video lag. Need a new card.

I'm running:

AMD 64 3200+
1GB DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
120 GB HD
Cable Internet

I go pretty perfectly everywhere at 1600x1200 with 2048 background resolution. Ironically, the only place I suffer from slight lag is the moghouse.
#17 Jan 18 2004 at 2:52 AM Rating: Decent
lol you lag in the moghouse? thats like the only place i dont lag.. well, not quite. but yeah it isnt server lag im getting. thanks for the help :) im gonna get this graphics card tell me if its any good please:

Well, first I'd suggest getting the latest detonator drivers from nVidia. After that, I suggest that you defragment your hard drive.

The graphic sputter you're recieving doesn't have anything to do with the actual connection to the servers, so I wouldn't worry about that. That's all performance of your pc.

You can have the game installed on any hard drive you like, and it will not make a difference. Hard drives basically just store programs until they're needed. Then, when they're needed they're loaded into memory from the hard drive. The OS loads into memory at bootup, so beyond that the hard drive is normally free. That's why it can spin down to save power on laptops.

Also, make sure you don't have anything like kazaa running. Double check and make sure that no spyware is on your machine bogging it down with software like spybot.

If you can't afford a new video card, you can try your hand at overclocking your current one to squeeze the last bits of graphical goodness out of it.

However, the game is choppy on my pc also, and I think it's not so much the power, as how the game renders graphics. It doesn't work the way things normally do in a 3d game (wire mesh plus tectures pinned on). I saw an article on it, and why it's wholly innefficient for pc. This would be why some people with powerhouse pcs have stuttering issues also.

My PC:
Pentium 4 2.8ghz
2GB Crucial PC2700 Dual Channel DDR
Winfast Geforce 3 TDH
420GB of assorted hard drives
Net access: 4 T1 trunklines

nope.. i did all that.. still choppy.. im not overclocking because it voids the warranty and i still have 18 months waranty on the card.. as i said in my last post. i am gonna get a new card. yours probably is choppy cause you only got a gforce 3 but everything else on your pc is absolutely amazing!! mustve cost you TONS of money for all that!

You think thats something. Check this out:

CPU = Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
CPU Speed = 3291 MHz
No. of CPUs = 2
Main Memory = Capacity: 2046MB : Free Space: 1489MB
Drive [C:\] = Local Disk Free Space: 121.49 GB (Capacity: 149.06 GB )
Graphics Card = NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra
Type of Chip = GeForce FX 5900 Ultra
VRAM = 256.0MB
AvailableVidMem = 250.3MB
AvailableTextureMem = 358.0MB

Hes got me beat with HD space, but no biggy. I dont have any MP3s nor want any. But Im running duel HDs that are RAID 0. Which means data split between both drives increasing my read/write times by about 30 to 40%. During treant event had 60+ people on my screen and I was like "video lag? what video lag? Muhahahahahahaha!!!"...*cough cough*, excuse me. That was with every setting maxed including setting background resolution to my own tastes of 1600x1200. I make love to my comp every night...

Um, I have 10 plants with some furniture in my moghouse- I think that's why it lags a little.

Coach: Did I mention I have a 2.4 Laptop beside me, two 1.4 AMD's and some POS 1.8 (something like that, cant even remember) Dell beside me? :D

haha it plays hard to get ^^ thats funny!
anyway guys you still havent answered my last question... is this a good graphics card, well better than gforce 4 mx 440.

One thing I believe no one mentioned yet is heat. Heat plays a major role in lag... I have my computer underneath a desk (no other place, really) and when my GPU gets hot, my game starts to lag. BTW, here's my specs (I know the graphics card isn't the best, but still runs just fine):

Athlon XP 2500 +
Chaintec GeForce 4 TI-4600
Dual 80 GB's, RAID 0
640 MB DDR RAM
And all the other perks...

Anyway, like I said, make sure your computer is getting proper ventilation.

I have a ***** Dell sitting next to me to. What do you think I browse these enlightening boards with? When my lovely, beautiful, gleaming, sleek comp wont put out I ***** slap my Dell for some laughs and stress relief. But my POS Dell is only a 1.5. Excuse me while I put the hurt on...I mean, it accidently falls down the stairs.
