FFXI is choppy for me. Am I doing something wrong?Follow

I got a new vidcard to play this, and I figured I could play it with the details all turned up, but it turns out to be fairly choppy. I have:

Athlon XP 1600+
768mb PC2100 DDR
Geforce4 4600 8xAGP version

On the benchmark I get about 2900-Hi and 3400-Low.

Not bad scores right? I figure I should be able to play 1024x768 and 1024x1024 background textures fine. Nope. Turning off bump mapping and environmental effects didn't help much either. In my Display Properties thing I have AA/AF set to Application Controlled on the very left.

So I did the regedit thing and changed the background textures to 800x800. Now it's pretty smooth (still not silky smooth though). But 1024x1024 is noticeably nicer looking. :/

Is there anything I can do short of overclocking?

Argh, I'm sorry for the triple-post. I got server errors and assumed that the posts didn't go through. :/

How choppy?

I have less memory, and a lesser video card then you, but a faster processer.

Is it constantly choppy? Or just choppy lowered frame rate in crowded areas?

Walking through mostly empty fields with a rarab or so, it is pretty smooth. Probably above 30fps.

It is slightly to moderately choppy while walking through Windurst. If I had to put a number to it, I would say around 15-30fps.

At the AH and when battling an IT w/ 5 other party members it can get extremely choppy. My guess would be 5-10fps.

That was when I had all the high-quality settings on.

how recently have you reformatted. and what is your OS? If it's Windows ME then that right there is the problem. Otherwise you just might be due a defragment, or reformat.

Try some video card tweaking programs as well. And make sure Anti Aliasing is turned off in your card settings

FFXI is very CPU dependent. A faster CPU will help out a lot.

Make sure you have the latest drivers. The drivers that ship with most geforce cards are pretty awful.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to defrag later. I do take care to keep junk off my computer through anti-virus and spyware detection software though. And I have the latest drivers. I am on Win2k Pro. I don't know if I can spend money on a CPU at the moment. What do you mean by tweaking programs by the way?

Can you run dxdiag and click the "Save all information" button to a text file and post the contents from the start (System Information) down to the end of "Display Devices" section?

Sure thing. I just defragged as well. The program showed heavy fragmentation on my C drive. I will test FFXI later though, after I get through my homework. Here's the dxdiag info:

Stop downloading so much ****.

haha, im j/k.
hmm, one of the biggest feature is the 'clipping distance'.

Try take that down a knotch.. This game is very good with that, it'll move the fog-effect ahead of the maximum distance too, while still giving a good look.

tell me how it works

im running ffx1 on my medium rig
1.2athlon
512 pc133
gfart4 4400

it runs acceptable(being a fps gamer i know framerates :) )at full settings and 1280x1024 and full clipping distance-all options enabled except AF and AA.
when you turn the corner and hit the AH and see 20-40 characters anyones systems will choketh a bit.

now if you say since you upgraded your old card to your new 4600 you've seen worse performance...well thats another story.
make sure 8x is enabled in bios(although not sure if itll make much difference)

What's ur old card?? The score u got is good compare to a pc of my friend. He got Athlong 64 3200+ with FX 5600Ultra and only get 3000 on Hi res... so u should do fine.. :)

The thing is sometimes pc are stupid :)

I had GF3 Ti200 with Nvidia driver in, then I upgrade to ATi Radeon 9800 and installed ATi driver, the omega driver.. back and forth and guess what.. a super smooth gaming.. benchmark is 1000 more on hi res then I clean install the windows :)

With Ti4600, u should do just fine with 1024 background and 1024x768 overlay and medium details...

I also found out that defrag first then install FFXI will improve the gaming too.. and never defrag after u install the FFXI because it will slow down a bit.. not sure why.. I will test it when I have time again but that's the case I found.. very weird.. which I don't quite understand as well :)

As for overclock, the Ti4600 isn't good to OC at all... You can try Powerstrip http://www.entechtaiwan.net/ps.htm for the vga card..

As for the CPU, I need to know more about the cpu and motherboard u are using b4 I can tell u anything :) and from the pc2100 DDR ram u got, u won't get much from it :)

Edit:
Saw the system info u posted.. the ECS motherboard are good for 150mhz fsb if your ram can do it :) as for CPU, I am not sure though.. u can try it.. ur cpu multiplier is 10.5 and fsb is 133 now, u can try 150x10.5 that should speed up a bit :)

It might just be the lag and nothing to do with your computer. I think everyone gets a choppy display in crowded areas.

This is going to sound terrible, but try playing without sound...get it *sigh*
Seriously, and I'm not just talking about turning your in game music off, but from the FFXI config disable sound. You would not believe how much better your framrate will be!
I too was haveing some real issues until someone suggested turning the sound off and now it runs like a nice quite dream. You get used to it, and if I'm just farting around I turn it back on.
Try it and see, may help you diagnose a few probs anyway.)

Windows 2000 is okay for gaming, but you might want to try to get Windows XP Professional. You have to remember that Windows 200 is used in a server environment. Windows XP is used for client use and was created to be more multimedia friendly.

Lower every option you can within the game that could attribute to speed.

# of Character Models Displayed
Clipping Plane
Weather
Shadows

Those 4 things when off or set to thei rlowest will give you a huge boost. From there slowly move them up until you're satisfied with your visual quality & Performance.

Well, as I had mentioned before, you're drivers appear to be extremely out of date (from dxdiag output). Get the new drivers here and see if it helps:

Another thing you might want to check is your AGP memory size in your BIOS. Make sure it's set to 128 Meg if your BIOS supports it.

Not really. They are pretty much the same:

Thanks for all the suggestions people. I looked in BIOS and it seems to be pretty sparse as far as options go. I will see if I can flash it sometime. Right now performance is acceptable and not too ugly. So, if anything I at least have the current state to fall back on. :)

(My old card was a Geforce2 MX btw)

That's just about as wrong as it gets.

Both have the same internal architecture, just a different 'skin' over the OS. In fact, most companies I've done systems for prefer Win2000 over XP due to the extra resources the XP 'advanced' GUI draws.

To boot, the only difference between XP Pro and XP Home is system admin resources (remote login, ext). In fact, 99.9% of Windows users will gain nothing by using Pro over Home. Save yourself the extra $100.

Jeeze, you might as well say that Mac OS X is only for server environment as well simply because of it's UNIX underpinnings and classic Mac is for the 'regular consumer'.

Sheesh.

Not to hijack the tread or anything ...

Might as well through this out here in hopes of someone's experience being able to help me out. My high res benchmark comes in at 3928 and I get the feeling it should be a lot higher than that. I still get some chops once in a while. Specs are as follows (this is a fresh XP Pro installation with all service packs/updates, and only FFXI installed on the primary hard drive) :

P4 2.4
ASUS P4P800 (800mhz FSB and 8xAGP equiped)
512 PC3200 DDR400
ATI Radeon 9800 XT (8x - 256DDR400)

I've seen people boast scores well in excess of that with worse hardware.

Does anyone have any suggestions or performance tips?

Hi again,

Just a quick update. Today I googled some research on overclocking and found a program called SpeedFan. I did some experimentation with it and found that my (admittedly aging) CPU is probably holding the video card back. Here's the results of the quick testing I did on the FFXI Benchmark:

1327Mhz (default speed)
3360

1379Mhz
3492

1425Mhz
3636

The increases are almost evenly proportional.

Anyway, back to the main point. The gameplay is acceptable right now at moderate settings (not the default ugly mode, but not quite Candy land either). I'm afraid to try higher overclocked settings for fear of damaging something. Plus, this program doesn't let me adjust FSB without changing PCI and memory bus speeds. But at least the cause of everything is found.

I must admit, I was probably being a little harsh when I said choppy. Having played several FPS games, I wasn't expecting an RPG to be so demanding. So anything under 60fps annoyed me.

Anyway, thanks again for all your help. I may try my hand at more overclocking later, once I learn how to do it better. If I do, I'll post another update here. Or maybe I'll just break down and upgrade my CPU. Who knows. Oh well,

Ta-taru :)
