Dark Knight Vs PaladinFollow

As a lvl 23 War I know I have the decision to make on a new Adv. job coming up relativly soon. Ive managed to narrow it down to Paladin or Dark Knight. Paladin sounds great for the ease of getting a party and the ability to tank like no other. But the Dark just sounds like a blast for sheer damage. Also alot of people have said that Pally's are in demand at the higher levels, which, if true leans me more towards that choice but on my server (Bismarck) I've occasionally done searches by job and there generally seems to be more like a 5 to one ratio of Pallys to Darks. If anyone has any suggestions, maybe some cool little ability of a class that would help make the choice easier, that would be great. =\

I am lvl53 Paladin on Bismarck. Find me in game, and I can talk to you about your paladin questions if you want to. Can't speak for DKs though, never played one.

There's nothing stopping you from getting both and trying them out for as many levels as you have the patience for.

I've loved my Dark Knight from the moment I got the job, and I'm still low leveled. I plan on getting the Paladin job too just for the heck of it. I have fun starting a new job at low level and leveling them up. It's great for drops and I like helping out the newer players as they learn the game.

One thing about using Darks later is that you have to be careful when you use their abilities. You can't go full out all the time or you'll have the mob on you in no time flat and nobody will be able to pull it off you. There's a good deal of technique to them, when to use your skills and when to hold back.

I'm not saying playing a Paladin is cake, but you won't be in as much danger of perishing because of using your skills as you would be as a Dark Knight.

i find this statement rather humorous.

A paly's job is to keep the aggro on him... they use all the skills at their disposal to keep that the case. And in a pt the paladin dies more times than anybody else (not counting of course the retarded blackmages that overnuke, being their own fault of course)

I think what he is saying is that a Dark Knight has a higher chance of dying in a group IF he acts like a retarded overnuking Black Mage (since Dark Knights are half BLM and all...)

The thing about Dark Knight is that you are basically a damage dealer and backup debuffer. There are many other jobs that can fill in as damage dealer. They could get a Dragoon, Samurai, Ranger, Black Mage or Monk.

Paladins are tanks. A balanced party needs a tank so they need you or possibly a Warrior or Ninja. So while there may be 5 times more Paladins out there then Dark Knights, the Dark Knights is competing with a lot more jobs for a spot in the group.

Yeah, my point was that as a Dark Knight, if you don't pay attention and just go all out (nuke) with your skills, you will most certainly perish.

If you are a Paladin and don't pay attention and just use your skills randomly, you probably won't be the one to die.

Even so, Paladins are built to take hits, Dark Knights are not, and I think it's safe to say that you can die much more quickly as a poor Dark Knight than a poor Paladin.

At higher level, it is not a very good idea to deal massive damage at once as a DRK (especially at beginning of the battle, before PLD gains full control of the hate). Therefore, an unskilled DRK, who loves to deal damage without thinking twice, will usually die faster than anything else. (well, second to un-skilled BLM).

High damage is a good thing, but it has to be dealed in smaller pieces over time.

On my server, we have lots more DRK than PLD.

Well, I'm a DRK and I can say that the only job that can beat me for damage at my level is BLM. Once DK's get guillotine, they start doing even scarier damage. Hate becomes a problem though, as you'll find you're getting a ton with souleater among other abilities. But oftentimes if you have a really proficient PAL, he'll have enough tricks up his sleeve to keep the aggro on him. BTW, having both a PAL and a DRK in your group is awesome. Pure damage and pure tank. :)

Thanks for the input guys, right now Im leaning a bit more towards Paladin, mostly because I have a feeling I might get to "trigger happy" as a Dark and and up pulling aggo, the urge to hammer stuff is just to great =] Eventually I'll likely work on dark as well but I think Ill do pally first.

Well, on my server DRKs aren't in real high demand (most of the time). I have 2 HL DRK friends, and they sometimes wait for hours for party invites.

PLDs, I have seen tons of them aswell, but I'm sure they are more needed in parties, because there are less awesome tanks out there than damage dealers.

You can always replace a DRK with a DRG, or a SAM, but when looking for a Tank, you have 2 options, WAR, or PLD, and most prefer PLD.
