Is mining worth it?Follow

I want to harvest some gils, I would like to know if mining worth the effort and the gil investment that you have to do to get the pick axe?

Thank you!

Very worth it, especially once you have all the field equip (gloves, boots, body). You can get pick axes for as low as 180 in Bastok port (fame dependent). That is a stack for around 2200... 4 Iron ore and you just made 200 profit not to mention when I go out I usually come back with 29 iron ore and about half a dozen picks left.. All in about 1-2 hours.. btw the mines in bastok arn't the only mines :P

Are there "levels" to mining points? Like different water types are different difficulty.

I go to the grotto in ghelsba to mine sometimes and I was breaking a pick on almost every swing, with hardly any finds. I'm really awesome at harvesting wood, but horrible at mining.

I've also never been able to find if:

1) job & level have an effect on harvesting
2) related craft skill levels have an effect (blacksmithing for mining, carpentry for harvesting)

3) a stat score has an affect (strength for mining maybe?)

I'd like to look into purchasing the fishing and harvesting gear when I get the cash.

I can craft my own harvesting tools now, that is a huge help as I can use what I harvest to craft new tools in the field if I have to (though usually I run out of space first when harvesting wood).

Hey-

Do you know if wearing the equipment that raises your harvesting skill is cummulative???

Meaning if you equip the boots, body, etc... do you chaces keep going up that you won't break your pic axe or hatchet???

I noticed in the update they also increased the chance of breaking equipment if you are mining the same point... does the new armor cancel this effect???

I have heard many stories of people not even finding enough ore to break even on the costs of pickaxes. The gear helps but the initial cost of the gear is so much that you are going to have to make a lot of runs into the mine just to recoup the start-up costs.

I would stay away unless you can afford to be dedicated. No easy money here, imho.

Which items are helping to mine?
#7 Jan 14 2004 at 8:18 PM Rating: Decent
Ok these armor help mining, logging, harvesting:

Field: Tunic, gloves, boots, and hose
g'luck!

Heh if u want to be flashy and have a hell lot of gil to spare~

Buy the worker tunic, gloves, boots, and hose. =P
These work the same as field armor but just increases the def of the armor and can't wear them until lvl 15.

Just makes u seem intimidating to others ;P

P.S. Worker armor won't increase ur chances of mining, logging, or harvesting. They're just the same as field armor. Just more expensive and have more def... heh...

I havent really mined too much, but ive done it around two times. Now i don't know how others have done but my first times were pretty good. I had about 6 pickaxes and broke only like 2. However i was able to get some good ore, mythril ore which i think i sold at bastok for 1k maybe more each. Now i dont know if this was luck and i dont even know if mythril ore is one of the better but i think it was worth it for not really spending a lot of time....maybe was only in there for a little more than half an hour.....was in Palborough Mines i think.

Mining can be profitable; and certainly seems more fun than fishing, to me.

Here's a quick primer guide, by yours truly.

Mining and You; the Path of the Pickaxe

It is arguable that the entire Republic of Bastok was founded around their mines, and in accordance, most acceptable locations to mine are found in the vicinity of this nation.

The earliest experience most people have with mining is in the Zeruhn Mines, a relatively safe, low-level area just off of Bastok's Mines District; in fact it is involved in Bastokers' very first Mission. The monsters in this area consist of Tunnel Worms, Ding Bats, Mouse Bats, and the single aggressive monster, a Giant Amoeba (~lvl 6).

While the location for the Zeruhn Mines is convenient, the yields are not the greatest. Most commonly mined here is Copper, Tin, Zinc, Iron, and on rare occasion Darksteel Ore, along with Pebbles. The Mining Points appear anywhere in or below the main room (where Smoke Breath and Subodh can be found). There are three tunnels, a short one to the east, and two longer ones to the SE & SW, extending from the main room.

The Palborough Mines are usually the next step up; and can be a greater challenge to mine. There are Mining Points on all three levels, and a character below level 25 will find the aggressive monsters to be a problem. However, the rewards can potentially be much greater here, as in addition to the above ores, Palborough has veins of Mythril & Platinum.

There are at least two other locations where mining can be performed, but doing so below higher levels is very hazardous. The high-end ores available include Colored Stones, Gold Ore, and Orichalcum Ore (heh).

There is a random element to mining; some trips will be good, others you may in fact take a loss. In my experience, even one piece of Field Gear helps your returns while mining; though the armor does require quite a bit of capital gil.

When Mining, know that as you mine out one Point, it will respawn in another location -- you need to keep moving to find the newest Mining Points. As you gain experience Mining, you will also notice that while there are a lot of potential locations for Mining Points to appear, they are fixed and finite.

You can purchase pickaxes in either the Port District at the General Goods store, or in the Mines District from Boytz's Knicknacks.

If the mining points are the same for all servers... then I can pinpoint where all of the mining spots are for zeruhn mines and Palborough mines... All i gotta know is how do i put this up... Maybe i'll just do that =P

Go fish. Seriously. I love the lake in East Sarutabaruta. Lake Telphidasomething. I usually buy 5 stacks of insect paste and come back with 2-3 stacks of moat carp. I've only broken one rod there, and that was a glass fiber.. I'm still using glass fiber and I've earned over 100k at that spot... In 3 days of just fishing at that.

Doing the math:
4k for 2 glass fiber rods.
Now the true math.
2k for 5 stacks of insect paste. 400g each.
Catch 2.5 stacks of Moat Carp. Sells at 4k a stack.
That's 6k profit. But wait. 2k for more bait. Another 2.5 stacks.. so that's now 3 stacks. 10k profit.

So in two runs and 10 stacks of bait totaling 4k, you've actually gained 16k. If you want to subtract the total of the fishing rods, then you've gained about 13k. Still a profit.

I like it better than mining because it's a more constant cash flow.
