I have just ordered FFXI for P.C. and I was wondering if the game is good or bad on a scale of 1 to 10. If someone that has the game wants to respond, I would apriciate(spelling)it.

Gee, I dont know if anybody around here has this game. But if someone does Im sure they can give you an unbiased review of it.

I only said,"if someone has the game" because there are people that don't have the game that like to respond and I am looking for someone that has the game that can give me a review! So if anybody wants to,I,agin would appreciate it.

how about instead of the consensus following notcoach, we can stop being jackasses for a second to just be polite to another human being?

I rate the game a 9.0 as i would rather have a little bit more recreational activities planned for vana'diel.

I have only found 2 things I dont like wit the game.

1. Leveling is too slow!

2. You get addicted to it and can't think about something else=)

EQ killer. Someone might actually knock SOE off thier cash cow if that gives you any idea how GREAT this game is. With 500,000 subscribers now, just think how that number will grow when the PS2 version comes out. Ironic i think since Sony makes the PS2 and EQ.

Too bad lineage 1 has over 2 million subscribers...I think somebody already beat SOE long before Everquest was even out.

As far as FFXI, I'd give it a 7-8, but I expect it to get much better as more content comes out. If you want a more in depth review of the game, check out sites like gamespy.com or ign.com, they'll have a lot of coverage on a game like this. Good luck and see you ingame.

As far as US subscribers alone EQ wins and stays the winner even after the PS2 version is released here. But FFXI will be close and may over take them within a year or 2 depending on how things develope. Lineages subscribers are mostly in Korea and the surrounding areas. No idea if Lineage2 will grab American consumers like Lineage1 has grabbed Koreans. Kinda dount it though. Alot of FFXIs appeal is that its an FF game which alot of Americans are familiar with. But well see.

The game itself has very few bugs. The graphics are about what one has come to expect for the current game fare, nothing will "blow your socks off", on the ohter hand nothing is bad, either.

Character creation is by far the most sub-par I've seen in a while, honestly I felt I had more control over my character with IRO and that's pretty bad. You have five races and you get to choose your head and gender (two races are one gender), each hair style gives you the wooping choice of two hair colors. Also there is no stat variation on characters, only between races, so all human warriors will have the same stats as every other human warrior.

Now then taking the "this is a MMORPG, so you have to party" argument aside, this game is **** poor on soloing. You will find that after about 15 for most clases, 10 for some, soloing will not be worth it. Given many if not all high level missions require a party to even hope to acomplish and the artifical level capping to prevent someone of a higher level from compleating it, you will find that 1) you must party, 2) if you don't join a link shell (in-game created clans/chat channels) you cannot get past a certian point.

The monster check system becomes grosly inaccurate between types of mobs and as you increas in levels.

Also the game is infected with munchkins. Powergamers, powerlevers, and min-maxers, this often makes partying less then desirable. Also, unless you join a Link-shell and make some good freinds, expect to spend levels 1-40 in the exact same placeses as everyone else, after 40 you can go back solo and explore some of those areas your party wouldn't be caught dead in.

Lastly combat, while requiring a modicurm of attaion, is very statict. It boils down to one of two formula, auto attack and wait for the signal from a party member to exicute a WS. Or sit in the back and wait to cast your spells. Given this is an RPG and not a twitch game, this is expected but can get quite tedious.

Good points, it is FFXI, there is a huge installed fan base. There are familer monsters. The giant chickens make their apperance as well as Cid and Airships. It's a solid game and can be enjoyable, but there is no real way to tell if it has the staying power of other similar games.
---edit---
Now let me add to this, I am still playing the game and paying for since it came out. I just figured I'd risk my rank by listing a few of the games flaws.

I haven't touched a MMORPG since beta'ing UO a million years ago and hating it..

That being said.. I love ffxi. I played a buddy's dark age of camelot character one night and it was "okay"... but it didn't get me hooked by any means.

I watched my roommate play ffxi for one night and I was at the store buying it.

As for solo'ing - I'd like to comment on that.. Certain classes can solo way better than others. As a monk/warrior I was able to solo quite a bit in leveling to 30. Sure I partied along the way but I didn't sit on my butt with seek party up when I wasn't in a party. I'd find some monsters I could handle.. and I'd kill them.. People that complain about not finding parties annoy the heck out of me. Now I'm leveling bard, so I really need to party to be able to take decent monsters... but with whitemage sub I don't think I'll have a hard time finding parties.

Just a quick list of what I found to be ideal situations for leveling -

1-10 solo - you can party up.. but xp will be slow - as brd, I started to party at 8.. but it was just a party of 2.

11-20 - I did a wide mix of solo and partying at this point as a mnk. It really depends on what area you start in.. Windhurst needs warrior types.. so if you want to play a warrior and not have a hard time finding parties anytime.. that's where to start. :) I started in sandoria.. which has a large share of war types so I did some waiting for parties.. but like I said, I would just find a monster I could get xp off of until I got a party request.

20-30 - Basically all party.. I maybe spent an hour or two solo while looking for a group. Also, I power leveled from 23-30, doing it in just over 2 nights of gaming. I got sick of monk and just wanted to get it over with.. and get my advanced classes.

The problem you'll find is that it's all about the quality of the party. I've only been in one mediocre party that gained xp. I've been in a lot of bad parties that didn't do well but I've also had a lot of great parties that piled XP in short periods of time. One of the best parties I had, did not have a dedicated healer too.. we had two casters with sub whm and they did just fine in Batallia with a 3 monks and a war. :) 3 monks + goblins = no bombs!

I never thought I would be "hooked" or sold on a MMORPG... I always made fun of them.. until ffxi. I only played ff7 too.. so it's not like I bought the game just because it was ff.

I give it a 9

I agree.....gave up EQ for this game after playing the month's free trial...and I'd been an EQ addict for over three years.

Easily blows EQ away. :)

Wanted to note that my 9 - is because of minor annoyances..

Like once you have a chocobo license.. you can only rent them if you are lvl 15 or higher... seriously.. why can't my lvl 12 brd ride a chocobo? It's not like he forgot how when changing jobs.

Also, some of the quests just seem to be full of "run across the planet 6 times"... it's just annoying. Even with chocobo's you can spend hours and hours doing missions that the "meat" of it only takes minutes. Like the rank 3 quest. Took like 3 hours to do.. had to run around and kill monsters for a bit.. then it all ended with a 2 minute fight with a black dragon. The dragon was cool.. but man that was a lot of horsing around. It sort of keeps me from doing more missions of that type because of how much time you spend doing nothing but riding your chocobo around.. gaining zero xp.

I don't really agree that leveling is slow, if you know what you are doing and you put your mind to it. Like I said before.. I gained 7 levels in just over 2 days.. from lvl 23-30. It's all about location and party and monster selection.

I spent 1 week leveling my cooking skill from 1 to 39. That got annoying fast.. but now that I have it at 39, I'm happy with it. It was a huge PITA to get there.. but I got my goal and now I can use that trade to make some money. Had I dedicated a week to leveling a new job, I'm sure I could have had it mid twenties, easily. :) It all depends on what your current goals are. If you want to make money, level up, learn the game, farm for items, learn a trade, gain fame for special quests, etc. They can all be done provided you set your mind to it. Also, some web research never hurts.

Gah you're kinda asking the parents how good a doctor a newborn baby will be... So far I give it a 9. It has a lot of gameplay elements that blend real well. Most of the problems in this game come from players and not designers. Overinflated low level items kinda suck but POL doesnt set the prices we do. If someone sucks at their job and you lose a level it's their fault not POL's... Things like that suck but it happens. The game itself is great and a complete joy to play. I think with a year ortwo in the States this game will develop into something bigger than any of us can imagine right now. We Americans tend to voice our concerns about problems rather quickly. Hell this country was founded on innovation! Expect killer expansions and updates in the future. Who knows Squarenix might just make a brain surgeon out of it's little mmorpg baby :) We can only hope.... and play!

So far, I would rate FFXI as a 9+/10 .. with my only issue being the PC interface clunkiness (but I am getting used to it). The graphics have EQ beat by years imho. The scenery is beautiful and the lighting is amazing.

If you are really into 'levelling', perhaps it is tougher to handle .. but .. I don't think that that is what FFXI is really all about. FFXI is kind of a 'living life' game in that, in order to really completely be ready to move ahead level-wise, there are many other 'tasks' to be taken care of along the way. And sometimes .. because of the beautiful scenery .. I think it is designed for people to just 'smell the roses and sit and enjoy'. I know I have been so dazzled by the change of night to day and vice versa that I have often just stopped for a while to watch and wonder at how well they have done the lighting. At any rate, this is just my kind of game. :)
