What is FFXIFollow

#1 Jan 13 2004 at 8:35 PM Rating: Decent
I have been playing everquest online adventures for some time now, but im starting to get pretty bored with it. This game is probly my next choice of a game to pick. Im just wondering
1. whats up with these job subjob things, i dont understand it at all
2.Is this game bigger or smaller the eqoa i know there are many more users, but is the actual surface area of the game bigger?
3.is it harder to grow lvls in this game then in eqoa.
4. what are all the skills you can learn, all ive seen is you can become a better fisher and stuff like that.
5. Can you own property, grow plants or something like that.
6. finally whats the battle system like. is it realtime and is it very fast and strategic, do you cut through the bad guys gauntlet legends style or is it more like ffx where each battle is a big deal.
7. What are the seperate jobs, is it possible to solo through levels, or do you need groups to make any real progress.
Ok thats alot to answer, but i hope someone can answer 1 or 2 of these questions to help me make up my mind.

1) Subjobs basically let you play two jobs at once, although there are restrictions on your sub job.
2) Not sure, never played any other MMORPG.
3) Again, not sure, although I have heard many say it's easier. I got to level 30 in about a month and a half playing about 20 hours a week.
4) Blacksmith, Goldsmith, Alchemist, Cook, Fisher, Clothcraft, Leathercraft, Bonecraft, Woodworking
5) You can buy furniture, flower pots, even paintings. Yes you can grow stuff.
6) Realtime-battles, not as grandious as FF series. They are not like hack-n-slash like Gauntlet though. Turn based.
7) Warrior, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage, Theif, Paladin, Dark Knight, Dragoon, Bard, Summoner, Ranger, Beastmaster, Ninja, and Samurai. Each has it's own benefits and weaknesses. You can solo until about level 10, then you need to party up to make real progress. But Linkshells (Guilds/Clans) makes it pretty easy to find people and make friends.

I'll do what I can, but I've never played EQOA, so I have very little reference.

1) subjobs (or support jobs) - when you first start the game you pick a job, once that job (or any job, because you can change jobs) reaches level 18, you can complete a quest, which allows you to gain a support job. The support job allows you to be a level 18 warrior / level 9 white mage. If you ever play D&D, it's a lot like dual classing, but a lot more versitle. The only big rule is that the subjob is always half (rounded down) of the primary job.

2) no clue

3) easy to grow levels, after level 5, each level requires 200 more XP than the pervious level. I've only been playing the game for 3 weeks, and I'm a level 20 warrior and level 12 white mage. The level cap here is 75. (for now, who knows what expansion packs will do later)

4) there's a lot to crafting, blacksmith, goldsmith, clothcraft, alchemy, cooking, fishing, etc... I'm not a very good crafter, so I can't offer much here

5) everyone gets a free "Mog House", with it's own butler called "Moogle", when you're not in your home city, you can "rent" a Mog House, even though it's free. You can grow things in pots in your Mog House.

6) The battle is real time, weapons and spells have a delay between next strike/recast, varies by weapon and spells. combat is very intense. 8 basic elements in the world, think about what elements work best on what mobs. This is not a Diablo style hack and slash... :)

7) general consensus is that it's best to solo until level 10 to gain XP fast (though not everyone would agree), then after that, i personally would recommend being in a party. As far as jobs go... you can look at the jobs link on this web page (left menu bar). That does a much better job than I can of explaining it.

Good luck, hope that you'll at least give FFXI a try... heck first 30 days are free. Can't hurt right?
