The Art of Making GilFollow

Ok, I've seen a whole lot of posts recently about people and their in-game fiscal concerns. I'm having them myself. There's just not enough ways to make money. So, I figured it was time to post a guide for you all. I can only contribute part of it, but that's where the rest of the people posting here come in. I'd like to come up with a decent gil making guide. I can only really post about how to start making gil in windurst, so you guys will have to fill in the rest. With a little help we could all be a heck of a lot richer without lowering ourselves to the point of people who buy gil with IRL money.

(By the way, this isn't a playing guide; it's just my methods to help friends make money in the game)

Here goes...

IN WINDURST:

LVL 1-5:
First, obtain the quests "The Postman always K.O.'s Twice" and "Paying Lip Service." For now these are the best money making quests to go on.
Next, go to the gate in port windurst and get signet cast on you. Proceed outside and slay everything within the limits of your skill. Try to keep a watch out for things which check as even or tough. At this low of a level an even match tends to not really be even. Just kill everything you can, and when your inventory gets full, run back in town and drop it off in your mog safe, then go out and keep hacking away. I never really bother with buying new equipment until around level 5. Once you reach that point, head back inside the city, go to your moghouse and unload the last of your loot into the mog safe. Now, look at the safe and its contents. Look for stacks of twelve. You may want to write down what you have stacks of and run to the auction house and check to see what's selling for the most. Try to ONLY sell stacks of things at this point. Selling single items really won't benefit you too much, so you might as well let them sit in your mog safe until you have a stack of 12 (there are exceptions to this).
Then, pick the 7 which you believe will sell the best, and go place them up for auction. Now would be a good time to go drink a beer or something, watch some TV, what have you. Come back in a little bit and see what's sold. (Or you can skip to the first part of the next section and get some quests).
With the money you've earned, buy yourself some new equipment. Drop the old stuff (old sword, etc), it can't be sold for the most part, so don't waste your time on it. Now the real money making can start.

LVL 6-10:
Before you go hunting, you're going to want to start the missions:

Creepy Crawlies
Mandragora Mad

These two quests will be extremely valuable until you're ready to go up to Tahronghi Canyon.

Ok, you're going to want to get signet recast on you, and then head back out into west sarutabaruta. Now, venture out slightly farther. You should try to hunt almost exclusively for Crawlers, Goblins (which check for a decent challenge), and Carrion Crows. Crawlers drop Crawler calculi and silk thread. A stack of silk thread sells for about 10000 in the AH. 3 Crawler calculi are good for an easy 600 gil at the Dhamel ranch. Carrion Crows are only good for fire crystals (in my personal opinion). Once you have a few stacks of things, run back in town, check the safe to see if you've completed any stacks, and go sell your booty at the AH. Buy some new gear, and head back out again.
By now you should be able to take on Mandragora and Yagudo. The main target should be the mandragoras, but yagudo are occasionally good for dropping spells which can be sold on market. Just about everything which mandragoras drop can be used in the Mandragora Mad quest, so take advantage of its repeatability and earn some gil.
If you fight some yagudo, occasionally they can drop yagudo necklaces. Use a wind crystal and a single yagudo necklace to yield a set of 3 grass threads. The threads are worth more in a stack than the nonstacking yagudo necklaces, plus you'll get to build up your cloth working skills.
Pretty much stick with this method until you can take out just about everything in West Sab.
You may want to run over to East Satura Baruta and try some things there. Be careful though, I noticed a big increase in difficulty when I started there. However going over to east sab can help you earn a little more gil from the Postman quest.
When you think you're ready to move on, head back into town.
Now is the best time to buy pots to plant plants in. You don't have to worry about seeds for now, but buy a variety of pots. They're decently priced at around 1k each, so try to get as many as you can (not more than 10 though).

Lvl 11-?
Get signet cast on you, and head to tahronghi canyon. Be careful as some of the enemies are rather tough here. For now you'll want to stay in the pass until you feel secure enough to venture out into the open plains.
The biggest money maker which I've found here are Strolling Saplings. Kill as many as you can. They drop the second best money maker in the windurst area, bags of herb seeds. On my server, Garuda, a stack of 12 bags sells for about 8k gil, which is decent considering it’s a fairly common drop. You may get other types of seeds dropped such as fruit or grain. Take these seeds home and plant them, and feed any spare crystals to them.

This is where I am now with my gil making scheme. Now is where the rest of you come in. How do you make gil in different areas of the game? What do you think are the best things to hunt/best hunting spots? Try to contribute what you can.

Good idea on making an open-ended guide.
Here's a few tips for the San d'Oria area:

Lvl 1-5: Get signet and go into West Ronfaure. Kill Wild Rabbits for Earth Crystals and Rabbit Hides. The crystals only go for 300-400 a stack at AH but you're still young so it's pretty good for now. Now there's 2 ways to go with the Rabbit Hides: you can either sell them at the AH (sorry I'm not sure the going rate for them) or you can trade them to Parvipon in
E-8 of S. San d'Oria. He pays 120 gil per 3 of them. I use this method simply because it ALSO BUILDS FAME. Fame becomes very important later on, and since the quest is repeatable it keeps building up. Another good money maker comes from bats, Ding Bats specifically. They drop Bat Wings which can be traded to Secodiand in E-6 of North San d'Oria. He pays 200 per 2, again repeatable. Just make sure to check the bats first since they range from lvl 1-5. As you approach lvl 5 you can start killing Forest Hares too, but again check them first since they have variable lvls. I don't personally bother much with Worms but they drop Earth Crystals, Flint Stones (100 gil per 4 from Legata, K-6 South San d'Oria inside the Inn) and various Ores. The Ores are low lvl such as Zinc and Copper, but it's extra money and EXP so you may want to go after them as well.

6-10: You can stay with the 1-5 stuff since it will still net Crystals, but at this level you can start moving on to Orcs. Make sure you check them first, they range from 3-8 in W. Ronfaure. They drop Fire Crystals (currently 1500 gil/stack on Bismark) and the Fodder drop Orcish Axes, which sell for around 150 (NPC's only, they are no trade items)Personally though I like to hunt Watch Lizards in Ghelsba Outpost. They range from 3-5 and drop Fire Crystals and Lizard Tails. Not sure the prices on Lizard Tails but they stack so keep them and sell them. A warning, BEWARE LINKING!!! While one Watch Lizard should be easy or decent challenge, 3 of them (or more) can be quite fatal even at 10th level. Make sure you can kill them quickly before trying to farm them, but once you can it'll make you a great deal of money at the AH.

11-15: Personally I kept killing Orcs in Ghelsba. If I've done my calculations correctly (which it's entirely possible I haven't) the lowest level creature that will still net EXP (which it HAS TO in order to get Crystals) is 8 levels lower than you. I may be off by a level or two, but that seems to be fairly consistant with the EXP amounts gained starting from Even (100, 72 -1, 50 -2, 36 -3, 25 -4, 21 -5, 18 -6, 15 -7, 12 -8). Basically what I'm saying is that up to level 15 most of the Orcs will still net EXP and therefore Crystals. Some won't though so be sure to check them.

Also at this level you should have no problem at all finishing the first 3 missions and gaining Rank 2. Once you get Rank 2 you can enter the Chateau d'Oragille (the big castle in North San d'Oria). When you get there go in to the right and go down to the basement. Follow the path until you meet Novalmauge (sp?)
He gives you a quest called "The Rumor". He asks you to bring him some Beastman Blood. This can be obtained by either killing Thread Leeches in Pashhow Marshlands or you can by it at the AH. Either way, trade it to him to get a scroll of Drain which sells for 15-20k. The price has fluctuated greatly so it may pay off to hold onto it for a little while. Just a heads up on the Leaches, they're 19-22 so you'll need to be higher lvl and with a good party if you plan on earning the Blood rather than buying it. My advice, buy it. You'll likely be way too low level to farm it when you get the quest, and we're talking about quick cash here, right? Well....quicker maybe.....

Anyways thats all I have for now, I just hit 21 WAR myself so I'm not too up to speed with money making at this level yet.
One thing to remember: If you're gaining good EXP, you won't be making much money if any at all. If you're making good money, little to no EXP. If anyone has a way to get around this, PLEASE POST!!!
Oh and it would definitely pay off to level Thief to at least 5 when you first get sub job (that is if Thief isn't already Main)
The Gil Finder ability helps tremendously, especially when you're farming the Orcs in Ghelsba. Level 15 ability Treasure Hunter is nice too, but unless it's your main job it'll be a while before you can use it.

A quick add on to my previous post:

Go to Port San d'Oria and get the Competition quest. It involves fishing so you'll need to save a little money for bait/tackle first. Talk to Joulet or Gallijaux, they are standing on a little dock in front of the cargo bays. They need Moat Carp and lots of them. You can use Little Worms which are probably the cheapest bait. Get a few cheap rods and start fishing. You can do this standing right next to them. You'll want a Glass or Carbon Fiber rod later since they won't break, but cheap ones work for now. Here's the catch, DON'T TRADE THE FISH!!! Messed up theory, huh? Since giving these guys 10,000 fish gets you a supposedly "uber l33t" fishing rod, EVERYONE is trading them fish. Get stacks of 12 and sell at AH for 3500-4000 gil. Thats up to nearly quadruple the measly 100 per fish the brothers give you. Only downside is you won't get the rod yourself, but thats ok. Any idea how long it would take to catch 10,000 Moat Carp????

"Carrion Crows are only good for fire crystals (in my personal opinion)."

A stack of bird feathers goes for 3-4k in jeuno. If you consider fire crystals at 1.6-2.4k worth it you might wanta re-check some prices on items stuff drops. You can get quite rich killing crawlers and crows only with the occasional goblin outside windhust. As a ranger I'm making about 4 times as much as I use arrows per level. Roughly 4k gil a lvl in arrows and make 10-12k gil in items on the ah.

"Only downside is you won't get the rod yourself, but thats ok."

FYI it's not ok. You want to pass up a 2.5-3.5 million gil fishing pole? 10k fish = 1 million gil plus the 2.5-3.5 million gil rod. You made maybe 3 million selling fish on the ah. net outcome. You lost 1 million gil.

Just some simple pointers to aspiring thieves. Steal has a 5 minute downtime, use it EVERY FIVE MINUTES. In early levels you're main targets will be mandragoras and beastmen. (For Windurst, not sure of Bastok or San, for I don't go there even at my level) Mandragora's of all kind cough up Saruta Cotton, which is usually about 5k per stack, and beastmen cough up Beastcoins. Beastcoins only go for about 2k, but once you're a little stronger and can pick on 3rd tier gobs or stronger versions of 2nd tier beasties they cough up silver beastcoins. (5k a stack)

Anyone wanna pitch in suggestions of steal targets, go ahead, but beastmen should have top priority. When you get around your 40's-50's you can steal mythril coins, 1k a piece. 60's you can get Gold beastcoins, 8k a swipe, and if you pull of reach 70+, Platinum Beastcoins are usually going for 25k+ a piece. (And now you know why thieves get all the money later on ;) )

I always want to start fishing.. can someone tell me where in San D'Oria that sells fishing equipments? I know AH sells them but the price are sooooo expensive... :-( I will say price are double in AH.

Re: San d'Oria fishing rod. The person standing in front of the weapon shop in south San d'Oria sells yew rods. Also if you follow the Chantel river down you can fight goblin fishers. It took me about 20 fishers but I got 1 Bamboo rod, 2 yew rods, 1 F. Water rod and 10 lighting cyrstals.

I find that most gil woes come not from the fact that it's hard to make money in this game, but from the fact that so many people power level they don't stop to make gil. Every area has something of value, of course Windurst and it's silk has the highest potential, but bat wings in Ronfers tomb come easy, not to mention all the gob equipment. Bastok has the bees in the hills, lizard hide all around and worms you can kill with your eyes closed that drop all kinds of ore.

Yea, goblins seems to be have good loots. I always pick up Goblin Mask and Goblin Mill from them which sold for 500gil each. But I never pick up any fishing equipment from them... hmm.....

Only goblin fishers drop fishing gear.

I usually only farm when I'm looking for something specific. If I just want gil, I'll probably farm beastmen in ghelsba with a job under lvl 13. You can get mad quantities of fire crystals there, if you aren't using them for tradeskills.. you can sell them off quick.

If I'm looking for cooking ingredients, obviously it is determined by the recipe. If I want some quick gil, I can make pet food and sell to vendor a decent profit but some of the ingredients don't stack (flour) and are annoying to get a ton of.. just having to use a mule or friend to buy and ship them is a task. :) But things like dhalmel meat, bird eggs, onions, and SEEDS... all are pretty good money.. there seem to be a lot of cooks around these days so the prices seem to be rising for those ingredients.. To the point where I am farming a good portion of them rather than buying them for profit reasons. Especially onions.. damn.. they are so easy to farm.. and they sell for 4k/12 right now on my server.

If you can farm cockatrice meat, I want to be your friend. :) at 30 mnk/war I was almost able to take one axe beak :( If you are higher than 30 and you don't have a trade to make money.. you can always farm that meat for HUGE money. 11-12k/stack right now.

As a cook, I spent a lot of time in windhurst, and the T (sp?) Canyon.. hunting dhalmel and akbaba's. The giant femur's and hides sold well, and I needed eggs and meat for pet food. Also, saplings and crawlers spawn there too.. so you can pretty much just thrash anything that moves there. :) If you are strong enough.. I didn't get any xp while in the canyon.. but I was at 30th lvl in mnk at the time. When I farm, I'm not looking for xp. I want quick kills and easy items. :)

As for low level stuff in Sandoria.. hmm.. bat wings get you good money, orcs, sheep, etc. I can't recall selling sheep meat.. but I may have. I've sold sheepskins. When I was low level there I wasn't farming. :) I killed rabbits, pugils, fishers, etc. until I could go to ghelsba and beat down orcs.

I still think one of the easiest ways to quick money is ghelsba above 9th lvl.. just walk through all the monsters.. including lizards with your signet and walk out with stacks of fire crystals.

All of these tips are great!

I am just surprised that no one has mentioned crafting for Gil??? To me all of those crystals are worth far more in crafting. Sometimes I craft at a lose, but usually I manage to make a profit.

Plus, I just think it is fun... and a great break from always fighting!!!
#14 Jan 14 2004 at 3:27 PM Rating: Decent
i didn't mention crafting simply because it actually cost you money at low lvl. so if gil is what you go after at low lvl, go farming =) save the gils later to improve your crafting skils. i'm sure they make good gils later on, but you will need 10s of thoudsands of gils to get there =)

that little guide is for someone who has no gils to begin with.

My gears and weapons had never ever catch up with my level when I was playing Everquest because making money in EQ is way hard. But compare with EQ, FF11 is way way way easy. I can earn 10k+ a night without going out and "Camp stuff for sell"(actually I cant because Im a WHM)

The secret is Auction House.

Study Auction House, know which item is hot and study where u can obtain them. MAYBE there are some items which is sold by NPC vendors from other cities. so all u have to do is just buy from those NPC and sell in other cities.

Yes Fishing is good money maker-skill, but Im telling you I spent almost 20k on fishing rods and baits and almost 2 weeks(14days) 8 to 10 hours a day NON-STOP! fishing to gain 5 levels(11 to 16). so if u cant spend that kinda time, don't border or it will drain you down.

Always "Buy and Sell" is a good and fast way to earn cash. study your auction house. its your cash machine!

some people say "Camp crystal, camp Rabbit hide and meat, bat wings for cash". well I "partly" agree when you are low lvl. but think back when you were at low lvl, all you consider is only "level up, level up ASAP". and you get from lvl 1 to lvl 10 only need around 3 days(maybe less). all you can earn from all the stuff u loot between that 10 lvls is about 8k. Most people already start grouping with others at lvl 10. when you are grouping, you can only earn exp not the loots. So your loot rate dropped down to 1/3 of when you are soloing(or even less). so actually u are not earning cash after lvl 10.

There are some caves that drop lvl 20 gears that can sell 1.5k to 2k a piece. but strange thing is "NO ONE IS CAMPING". Maybe my sever is still new (Azura)

Yup..buying and selling is another good way to make cash too. But for it to be effective enough to make good cash, you need to have multiple chars in at less 2 cities. One time i happenned to stumble on Comp eyes circlet selling for 500 gils in Windhurst's AH. *no it is not a typo...it was selling for five hundreds gils* what did it do? i bought 3 of thoes, sent to my bastok mule and sold them for 1500 a piece =) easy 3k there. So if you are too lazy to look for each shop for item price, look up the item rewarded by quests for that city in AH, they tends to sell for a lot cheaper in that city's AH.

Here are few example

Windhurst
Blazespike scroll, Comp Eyes Cirlet

Bastok
Drain scroll

Sandoria
Spatha

And there are quite a few more items too, so just look them up. If you are lucky, they give you fast and easy money =)

One way I've found to make money real early on is to switch jobs right around 10th or 11th level. I'm in Bastok so there are a plethora of vultures who drop fire crystals. I havent made it to 18 yet with my rdm (which is the main I want to stick with) I figure with Thief, War, and Monk being able to solo well at low levels I just rake up the fire crystals and when they get around level 10 I just switch. The reason being the game is much harder to solo after L10 or 11 or so. So I might be slowing my overall progress in the game at first but I will have hella loot starting out. If you're choosing an expensive main job this might help you out a lot. Plus by the time i do get the Subjob quest I'll already have some leveled subjobs to choose from. I'm probably going to stick with thief til level 15 or so for the treasure hunting ability. Plus steal gets tha drops. When i have a comfortable nest egg of gil I'll continue with my rdm :) Tell me what ya think!

In most cases crafting will only make you a profit if you farm the items yourself. That is until you reach higher levels. As a general rule of thumb the resources needed to make an item cost the same as the item itself, and usually that doesnt include the cost of the crystal so it actually costs more to make lower level items. If you want to craft for a profit, farm the needed items and crystals yourself. That or save up a ton of money and be prepared to blow it all on raising your skills. It will pay off in the end but its a long and expensive trip.

I like your idea. I was thinking about doing it too, but I have no where to stow my current equipment since my mog safe is full, and i can't afford to buy new stuff!

I've honestly never been a fan of mules. I may end up getting one. However with some RL money concerns, i'd rather not spend the extra dollar. When things loosen up some then hey, i might as well get a mule.

if you didn't buy the soda or coffee that you are sipping...you get yourself that extra $1 for the mule ;)

Hahaha, touchet :) However, I do have the RL concern that my manual is at my house, about a thousand miles away from my dorm... this could yield problems when I try to get a new content id ;)

Either way, i'm gonna check it out. Hopefully its not as tough to apply for a new one as it was the first time around.
