Ok... So this is my first virgin post that came to mind. I have a theory about the Tarutaru...
It's a bit radical but I believe that the Galkas and the Mithra did some bad nookie and came up with the Tarutaru. A mixing of two different races to make up the mutant children strong in magic.
Just a theory but seems logical. :)

Galka reproduce asexually and I'm unclear about Mithra but i think they're hetero ... just that the males are very uncommon and thus the inability to play one
I heard that over 2000 years ago a Galka pulled a rib from his side and placed it under a rock producing the taru we have today. Cant be that far fetched. meh =/ lol
The Tarutaru are the evil spawn of the Shadow Lord. They were built to look cute as to deceive the world. If you don't believe me just wait for a few more expansions and you will see.

They just say that in the US version because they thought that the truth would be offensive to us. In the japanese version the mithra are a race of futa catgirls.

Have you noticed how the elvaan ears and the taru ears look so similar? I say the two elvaans overdosed on viagra and shrunk :P now their babies are permanent midgets ^^

The Gods decided to make the most annoying race on Vana'diel. After the first experiment was wiped out by the existing inhabitants, the Gods revised their plan. They decided that if the creatures were also disgustingly cute, their lifespan may increase as they might not be strangled the moment they open their mouth. Hence the Tarutaru.
Tarutaru: The greatest MMORPG race ever. And the similarities between Taru and other races are most likely explained through the fact that they are most likely the handicapped offspring of Tarus unwilling to witness such inferiority in their homes. Unfortunately, the famous Tarutaru kindness allowed these crippled offspring to flourish instead of disposing of them properly. Now we Taru have to not only put up with your obnoxious inferiority, but your bad smells to.

Sorry to say this but I always thought that the Tarutaru evolved from prehistoric rats that once rule the land.
Of course other races have to invent such vile theories in order to try and raise their own status. But dont feel to bad. Most Tarutaru will feel badly for you and heap pity upon you. Take cheer in that at least.

I think they were synthesized by some high level smith. He was supposed to make a mithran sword, but he got a +1 midget instead.
Some hypothetical explanations of the Taru race I gathered over time :
- Tarutarus are exactly what they appear to be : brown-nosing children. Windurst is a penal institution for juvinile suck-ups.
- Tarutarus are Elvaan, as demonstrated by their Elvaan ears - just with a (different?) growth deficiency. Whether this is the cause of physical mutation or improper medication (it is rumored Elvaan use various experimental growth stimulants, especially those that increase their ears, neck and ... eh ... yeah) is unknown.
- Tarutarus come from a galaxy far far away - the Star Wars galaxy, that is. They're shaven Ewoks.
- Tarutarus were designed by the great Goddess as lackey-annex-footstool combos : for her own enjoyment, she gave them a childish psyche. The other ancestral races, taking pity on the fate of the poor misguided creatures, decided to ask the Goddess to set them free (a decision their offspring regrets to this day). A vast portion of the Mithra felines were instated as guards-annex-babysitters.

I've always thought that they smoked a little bit too much paoti out in sarutabaruta, which stunted their growth and messed with their brains. Would certainly explain their speech impediment!

That's where the Mithra males are!!! They can't hunt cuz they got stuck babysitting Taru!!!
