Hi, I was wondering what gamepads people are using out there on FFXI and what they rate them/where they got them. (I have a logitech dual action gamepad that totally blows, the calibration starts to reset now every 30 mins and the joysticks dont work like they did when I first got the controller.)

Those things are awfull, my brother got one and had the same problem. On the other hand I'm using a Logitech Wingman Rumblepad and it's the best gamepad I've ever used, though you'll never see one like it made for game consoles because it's not really desiged to take abuse the way a typical PS2 controller is (thrown against a wall ect. I went though at least 5 different PC gamepads and this was the only one I found that didn't suck.

If you want a PS2 type gamepad, I'd reccomend just getting a PS2->PC controller adaptor (make sure it's one that supports vibration function)

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

I use the Saitek P880 Dual Analog:
http://www.saitekusa.com/usa/prod/p880.htm

It's cheap; basically had this before I bought FFXI and was pleased with how well it functions with this game.

Alot like the PS2 controller, but no rumble and 2 shoulder buttons instead of 4, and 6 thumb buttons instead of 4.

It's also somewhat bigger than the PS2, which is good for me because the PS2 controller is too small and uncomfortable for my hands.

Saitek does have a rumble version, too.

I'm using an usb converter and a ps2 gamepad.. works perfectly no complains at all =)

got used to the keyboard now... tried the gamepad(original PS2 controller with the PC adapter) and didn't like it... still keyboard seems more convenience. If I can do all my macro with the same controller, I will reconsider. I rarely use the mouse now... mainly the numpad and the arrow keys.

Okay thanks guys.
But I still have one more Question Where do you get the PS2 USB adapter for the controller?
#7 Jan 13 2004 at 4:21 PM Rating: Decent
this is one of them... but there are plenty more out there. Average around $15 each.

Half the people who drive me nuts by not being able to stay on one side of a mob so I can sneak (I can't dude, I use auto follow during battle) are using a keyboard. Hate the camera? Well, a gamepad completely fixes it that too. (you move with one stick and position the camera with the other) And you can use your macros from the controller as well (accessed from the shoulder buttons). Menus are easy too, you use the dpad to scroll theough them, pretty soon you'll be able to use your menus while you are moving (use the thumb you were using to control the camera to move, use your left thumb on the dpad) Once you get used to it a controller is faster. I still use the ketboard for a few things, but 95% of the time I use the controller.

I second the motion! This controler rocks. The best $20 I ever spent, maybe almost the best =>. You can completely customize its funtions and sensitivity. It takes a little time to configure it, but its well worth your time to do so. Send me any questions you have about this controller!

as soon as I can type with a controller, I'll use one. This explains the lack of communication I am seeing in groups....

Has anyone using the Saitek figured out a way to utilize the "shift" button?

I'd love to set it up so that shift + button 1 through 4 accessed my most frequently used macros, but I haven't found a way to do that yet. :(

And as far a communicating goes, it's easy enough to switch to the keyboard to chat...that's what laps are for. :) (I mean, you have to take your hands off the mouse to chat too, right?)

I use a PS2 controller with the usb adapter. Got one off of ebay $10 shipped. 2 controller slots, rumble

I also wish you could just hold the macro button and hit buttons 1-4 for the most used macros.
Most people got a PS2 or PS dual shock controller laying around. If you don't you might wanna buy one of these other controllers, as it would probably cost less.

I also use the Saitek P880. I have used the customizing software to make one button CTRL-C and another the TAB key. Makes targeting mobs and checking them really fast.

I like this product a lot. I had nothing but trouble with the logitech one. It would stop working within 30 minutes of starting the game.

My ONLY complaint is that more than single button press macros don't work in the game. That's fine since it probably violates the EULA or something. Still it would be nice to have an inventory sorting macro. (CTRL-E, +, up-arrow, enter)

I use the Saitek P880 and have befoer I got FFXI. Yes you can't type from the controller but I don't have to type every second or every minute for that matter. As for the shift key, I use it to change views myself. My friends all have different gamepads and all are Saitek and they all love it versus using the keyboard which was making my wrist sore. Go with the Saitek P880, stay away from the cordless ones battery dies to fast.

I just have a Microsoft 10 button Game pad. Works fine for me. The D-Pad moves the character. If I hold the left shoulder button it the D-Pad moves the Camera, and if I hold the right shoulder button the D-Pad moves the Cursor in the Menu's. Bo fancy rumble stuff or 3rd party app macroing abilities or anything. Just a basic Microsoft 10 button (was like 15 bucks I think)

I use keyboard, no mouse.

I have 10 Macros that I use on a regular basis... shoulder buttons just aren't gonna cut it for that. I like talking in my parties. I like communication and planning and opinions and all that good stuff that comes with playing with other people. I talk to my LS and friends between fights and can hop up, target and start casting before the puller even gets the mob back in my casting range. (Healing puller as he comes in.)

As far as keyboards result in people running around stupidly...
Naw, people run stupidly because they refuse to learn that while running they can alter camera with one hand, run and control the maps with the other using autorun, and that during fights they really just plain shouldn't be running around without a reason.

I think the only reasons I move are pulling aggro (tank provokes, but battle is closer and I need out of AOE again.) or running in for a mid-battle protectra etc. and then running back out.

WTF, people cant move around with keyboard? they just suck then. I can do absolutely everything with my keyboard. I NEVER, i repeat, NEVER, use my mouse ingame, or even through POL. And as my sig says im a THF, I dont have any problems whatsoever sneaking. Everything is insanely fast, while im walking i can change views / etc with the arrow keys, its perfect. I will never go back to a controller. Never.

forget all the other control pads the new iType2 controller rules all. Ive been using it for about a week now and it beats my old controller, a Wireless Logitech Wingman, which broke. the itype2 has a keyboard built into it so u never have to use the keyboard and not get CTS. You can also set macros for it. my only complaints about the controller is that its made for the ps2 so you will have to buy a ps2-usb controller adapter which costs about $10-20.

I got an airflow. The most amazing thing ive seen, has a built in fan so it cools your hands while playing.

Thanks guys for all your help... I went out to the store tonight and bought a PSX to USB game adapter from Radio shack (10 bucks). It says PSX on the package but works with PS2 controllers. I think it is worth the 10 bucks to buy the adapter especially if you have a PS2 because all of the Gamepads for PCs blow. oh and it comes with a driver but my comp recongnized the device right when I plugged it into the USB port.
I rate this device a 5 out of 5 because its cheap, and works great.

I will be getting one of those PS2=>USB from the $h|+ Shack because they are cheap and will work for some arcade emus I play. As for FFXI, I will try it and see but I have my doubts with it. I am too used to the keyboard and ignore the mouse if I can.
