FIREWALL! HELP!Follow

#1 Jan 12 2004 at 7:33 PM Rating: Decent
Hey everyone-

My school currently has a firewall up that prevents me from accessing Play Online. Is there a way to bypass this with the PC? And also, if it is firewalled with the PC, is the PS2 firewalled as well? thank you for reading.

First of all, you should check with an admin before you try accessing it (For some sick twisted reason, your schol might not want you accessing POL.. I don't know why, but maybe they do. Maybe to suppress the student body.. :) )

The next step is to find out what kind of Firewall is involved. Hardware? Software? A linux box?

And as far as the Ps2 being fire'walled.. This is a possibility, since the PS2 has to access the same server that PC users do. I'm not too sure on what ports POL uses.

Good luck..

Like above, you basically have to ask whoever controls your firewall to open the port required by the POL client and FFXI. Here is the relevant port information...

https://secure.playonline.com/polapps/s/s.kb.html.Qa?ZUID=3&polg_loc=en&id=2293&qs=id%3D0%26c1%3D6%26c2%3D35%26k%3D%26s%3D0%26o%3D10%26term%3D0%26caseNum%3D10%26polg_loc%3Den

As a network engineer, if someone asked me to do this, they would be greeted with a firm "Hell no", but that's me. Maybe I'm just weird about networks being used for what they are supposed to be used for, but I'm old so nevermind.

I agree with Zander 100%. Chances of you getting your school to do anything to allow you to play FFXI via their bandwidth (possibly on their PC's?) are two: none and forget it...:) Being one of those IT monkeys as well, that would just be opening many issues. The only problem I have with Sony's "help" is:

PlayOnline(including all related software such as FINAL FANTASY XI) may use any of the following ports. If you are using a router, please configure it to allow packets to pass through these ports.

Port numbers that may be used by the PlayOnline server group.
TCP 25.80.110.443 or 50000 - 65535
UDP 50000 - 65535

Port numbers that may be used by terminals such as the PlayStation(R)2.
TCP 1024 - 65535
UDP 50000 - 65535

This is a highly negligent (sp) approach to providing the information that someone needs to config a software/hardware based firewall setup. To just open these ranges of ports can potentially expose someone to trojans/apps/exploits if your firewall does manage via the application level (IE Allows said application to connect to whatever ports it wants). I really would like Sony to provide better information in this case to make assist users to be able to protect themselves.
