Hi All, Just have some problems with Radeon 9800. Does anyone has this problem which the game doesn't seems to use any Antialiasing? One the ATI driver side I manually selected it to run at Best Image Quality or even use the Custume setting with max settign for all. In the FFXI config I selected 1024X1024 and 1280X1024 something liek that. All other MIP setting on, ALL Texture Uncompress. But still... graphics are still look like nothjing been turn on... any idea?
Also, the PC I have support Hyper Thread.... I thjink I saw some post saying if I disable HT I'll get better performance? Ay idea?

Turn off the post render effects (anti-aliasing and filtering) to "game preference." FFXI does some weird business where it renders to memory first (at 1024x1024), then resamples that to the screen resolution when it goes to the output buffer. You can make things look smoother by upping the "background" resolution, thus when it resamples there will be less aliasing.

FFXI does not support full-screen anti-aliasing. There's nothing you can do about that.

One thing you can do, however, to mimic the effect of antialiasing is to head over here

and externally increase the background resolution.

I personally have a 9800 pro 128, and I set the background resolution to 1280x1280 and most of the jaggies are gone. It's not perfect, however, and it would be really great if at some point Square catered to the PC crowd in this way...

You can tell they did a rush job of porting from PS2 to PC, a lot of common PC graphics features are missing. In addition to the FSAA problem, pop-up is EVERYWHERE in the game, it should smoothly fade into view...

I've got an All-In-Wonder Radeon 9700 PRO. I've found that the game looks best with Mip-Mapping DISABLED (it seems to add a "grainy" effect on this card/game combination), and Anisotropic Filtering forced on through the driver. I've experimented with Antialiasing, but haven't noticed any real benefit so I usually leave it turned off.

I have the game running at 1024x1024.

I also use "Low" texture compression rather than none. This setting only compresses the sky textures which saves a bit of memory, and you don't really notice it (unless you walk around looking at the sky all day). I find a lot of the time I can't even see the sky in the game.

Also, I had very bad luck with the Catalyst 3.9 drivers. The game would crash back to the desktop regularly. I've gone back to the 3.8 drivers and crashes are extremely rare (but do happen). I haven't been brave enough to try the 3.10 drivers yet.

As for Hyper Threading, I really can't say. In theory, Hyper-Threading should only improve performance if it is enabled, but try setting it either way and see what effects it has.

When I first got my new 9800 I immiediately jacked up all of the settings and was very disturbed by the results. Jagged, blurry edges everywhere, it gave me a headache. Increasing resolution helps somewhat but also makes your text too small.

I couldn't rest until I fixed the problem so I played with the settings until it looked good again. Sadly, I dismissed the scientific method because it takes so damn long to exit POL complete to change graphic settings (the earliest you can observe the effect of your changes is at character select).

So, I can't say what exactly I changed to fix it, but my graphics are perfect now and I am not changing them anytime soon.

Mip Mapping: OFF (unchecked)
Overlay Graphics Resolution: 1152x864
Background Resolution: 1024x1024
Texture Compression: High
On-screen Maps: Uncompressed
Bump Mapping: ON (checked)
Environmental Animation: Smooth
Show opening movie: OFF!!! (I bet this was the culprit)
