While its a very good explenation of how xp works, its somewhat misleading with the party ranges.
At higher levels party composition becomes much more important, and there is much less room for errors. I'll use my current situation as an example. Right now I'm a level 48BLM and I've been hunting beetles in quicksand caves, the east altepa desert entrance. When I hit 49 I'll have to move to west altepa entrance but until then the xp is still pretty good on the east side. Anyway, if you take a well balanced party of 47-48's to quicksand, say whm rdm blm thf pal sam, you'll do very well. On the other hand if you have the same party composition but instead its 42-48 you'll get barely any xp at all. Not due in any part to an xp penalty based on level ranges, but because you won't be able to kill anything. Your tanks will take too much damage that your mages won't be able to heal, the blm will be hitting for 10-20 dmg instead of 200-250 because of the high resists, thieves and samu's will be missing, no one will be able to hold agro, and the beetle will eat your healers for lunch.
Oh, and its here also:
