Does anyone else think that FFXI is kinda lacking sumthin that has been in some of the more recent FF games...limit break type abilities. Now i know that the 2Hr abilities are really powerful and all that, but when i think of something like Lion Heart from FFXIII and then i do my "Eagle Eye Shot" it seems kinda bland in comparison. Im not saying that there should be super huge kill everything moves, but at least stuff that looks a little kooler. I dont know how much it would slow down the game, but i just imagined kooler looking abilities from FFXI. Final Fantasy games (since VII, got into them fairly recently) have always wowed me with some of the spectacular looking attacks and this one doesnt seem to have them. I like the 2hr concept, but maybe if you got new ones that were kooler/better as you lvled? Maybe its not a really good point; and im def. not disappointed with the game. I guess i just like the flashing lights in the FF games ive played b4 this one =^)

Curious... how far along are you.

I felt the same way up until I got my WHM above 10... now I feel like unzipping and floggin it right there every time I cast slow... errr... I mean... the mid-high level special effects are really keen... yeah... that's what I meant... dun mind me... ^^

I agree that Weapon Abilities are pretty bland, for the most part. But like you said, they can't really be overly long or complicated, because that would increase demand from the PC, the servers, etc, and after a while it would get *really* annoying to have to wait through a 5-minute sequence to deal your 40 points of damage.

Hit the nail on the head.

Unfortunately, they try to make effects that aren't so demanding on computers. Keeping minimum requirements as low as possible means more money for them.

However, I'm sure in the next couple of years they will change some, for example, with everquest, they put out a new spell effects system that looked great, but was optional. Same for the newer models.

I think that the programmers like eye-candy as much as we do, and most of them have a desire to make THEIR game better. I alos think that alot of times little things like that happen in their spare time, so it will take a while for it to get finished/submitted/approved/tested/added, etc.

But it is a nice though, definitely.

It sounds like the guy in #1 hasnt heard of tactical point weapon skill attacks.

Watch the TP gauge on your character, and when it reaches 100%+ you can do a weapon skill. While not a ff9 alexander summon, it is a little flashier than your average attack.

in case you didnt know anyway.

If everyone was running around performing "Omnislash," our computers would sieze up and have a heart attack.

I recently got Raiden Thrust and I'm very pleased with the effects. I can't wait to see penta thrust ^^ And I love Renkei to death. Tell ya what. Go compare these graphics to EQ's when they were 2 years into the game...you tell me.

I agree, and that's not what im talking about. Like even if Eagle Eye it the only thing I can get...make it look more pwerful. Its the same animation for shooting a regular arrow just with diff. color flash at the tip of the arrow. Would it really be TOO much to ask to throw in a more diesel, maybe more exaggerated character motion in there and maybe a follow through trail for the arrow...i dont kno...SOMETHING to make it really unique. Hundred hands in JUST a monk attacking more quickly then they usually would. Granted its really good, but its not really sumthin that i feel deserves 2hrs to be able to see again. THF, 30 secs of no melee dmg!? should i really have to wait 2hrs just to be able to do that again? I just think that if its sumthin thats supposed to represent the really strong point of the character it could be a lil lesss bland/normal looking.

"they can't really be overly long or complicated, because that would increase demand from the PC, the servers, etc"

its always funny to see ppl that know nothing about programing speculate about the technical side of things like this lol

so ummm... why would a improved client-side animation cause more load for the server? and what's the "ect"?

just funny cuz i see it so often in forums... if you don't know anything about a subject then don't spread incorrect information.

Dont exactly know what stoofoo is. And pentathrust really isnt THAT amazing. Also, even thro it looks kool, its one attack. Anyways, not my main thing. Im mainly talking about the 2hrs. If im waiting 2hrs to use an ability, I'd like it to be KINDA impressive to watch, not just impressive in the battle log.

And since you seem like you know, Wheatpuff. How much slower would adding some more spectacular animations (nothing crazy now...Maybe Pentathrust spectacular)

Separate question. How big are Behemoth/King Behemoths?

Ok, This has very little to do with programming this has to to with network load between a server and several clients. I won't go into specfics, but for everyone to see those great graphics the server first has to recieve packets from the client preforming the "Cool Attack" to send packets to everyone in viewing range that "Cool Attack" has gone off. Where the slow down comes into play is when below average computer #1 recieves the info to display "Cool Attack" from the server and lags because his video card/RAM/cache can't handle that much data along with normal stuff. This is of cours best case scenerio with a cable modem(256K+) or DSL and this is also assuming that the animation is client-side and not server. Computer Programming has very little to do with lag. Not to harp on you, but hate to see misleading info like this being spread. If you have some information to prove me wrong I'm willing to hear it out.

Kitira
Red Mage

Yes, I do have the XP to back this. :)

Have you seen some of the new WS that require a quest? It's just like in the other final fantasies, the good stuff doesn't come until the end =p

Why in the hell would the animation ever be server-side? The server sends your computer the "do cool animation" packet, your computer receives it and renders the "cool animation". It would be completely laughable and redundant if the animation was being rendered server-side then sent out to your computer.

No i have not seen the newest, quest only WS. But i guess ill take your word for it that they are kool. And to the above post thats why he said best case scenario for having animations be client-side. Makes the most sense. I hope that i get to see some really kool stuff cuz as of right now im pretty un-wowed by any of the attacks ive seen. Maybe the higher lvl stuff is kool and i just need to wait. Anyways, thanx everyone for the input.

i think skillchains/renkei are the equivalent of limit breaks.. with magic bursts they're VERY good..

and there's also the 2hr ability...

Don't know much about WS since I am all out mage (besides, who needs weapons when you got magic =P) but I saw a few members of my LS chain WS and the effects were spectacular. It was big and loud and fiery and I was like, "What the hell was that, and can you do it again!!!" Just wish I had thrown in a Magic Burst. He was ~lvl 25.

And for those people who say it takes too long to get to that level to do cool stuff, my suggestion is for you to go play Star Wars Galaxies and you won't have any problems reaching uber levels in hours.
