if you start in Bastok (hume town) you get a bastokan ring, which gives you bonuses to stats. If you start in San d'Oria (elvaan town), you'll be treated as a lesser being by most of the elvaan NPC's, but you can spend your conquest points on armor. If you start in Windurst (tarutaru town), you'll start in the coolest, most beautiful of the three starting towns, and you'll have the best newbie ground in the game.

Bastok is the homeland of Galkas where they founded almost every mines around from their almighty strenght! This town is really my favorite since Elvaans NPC are really ****** ("Move on foreigner!") and Windurst is just uselessly huge and taru's speaking gets annoying (and are those mithras always pissed? lol!). The bastokian ring is also the best for any melee character. +1 Vit, +1 Dex. Better than the San D'Orian one where you like the +1 Str but dont give a d@mn about the +1 Cha!

Oh btw Bastok is surely the most space efficient city I've seen with Jeuno. No neverending hallways, grouped merchants and well positioned AH and moghouses (maybe excepted Bastok Port's one).
