Issue Phinigel is facing with Plane of StormsFollow

If you haven't been following this thread on the official Everquest forums, the developers appear to be setting up a bottleneck for upcoming Planes of Power progression.

Here is the issue.

In order to get flagged for Bastion of Thunder, you need to kill named giants in Plane of Storms and loot different pieces in order to finish out the quest to get flagged. See this quest entry for a more detailed explanation.

Normally NPC's like this would be in the Agent of Change progression instances so guilds could just farm them in their own private instances. However developers have decided not to put these giants in instances. They have stated they will leave them in the open world and will spawn in picks.

Here is the problem. There is quite a bit of competition on the server to become one of the first guilds to finish expansions. See the phinny kill board. Notice how many raid guilds are on the server. In Luclin there were 21 different raid guilds and the top guilds normally will do whatever they can to be the first on the server. Train, steal camps, dps race. I know this because I am in a raiding guild on Phinigel and have dealt with this. The top guilds will monopolize key mobs in order to progress the fastest.

Some people have suggested coming together as community to have multiple raiding guilds zone in to form new /picks and then assign picks for certain guilds. This would be great if everyone played by the rules, however in reality this will fail when the top guilds don't play by the rules and storm into your instance and take your camp and kill your key mobs.

What do you all think about this?

I can't think of a reason for Daybreak to do that to PoS. What purpose does that bottleneck serve? I can only come up with a conspiracy theory that one of the devs is in a top raiding guild and has an inside track to get flagged.

That sucks, hope it doesnt hurt the server pop. I dont play there but I like to see EQ severs become popular.

There is a storm coming to the Plane of storms, a storm of trains, KSing, and general chaos. Feelings will be hurt, friends will be lost, and I feel that daybreak is making a mistake. I for one am thinking i may just stay on luclin for an extra week. although that relies on thinking that the people who (need to be first) will just move on when they get theirs. part of me fears that they will continue to roll though PoS creating chaos and havoc just to slow everyone else down more.

I dunno, maybe I'm missing the point here. But I do think these kinds of complaints are generally consistent with the "Care Bear" mentality than modern day gamers sometimes are prone to. The thing I remember most vividly about PoP was that advancement REQUIRED EFFORT. Heck, I can't tell you how many times my friends and I had to do the Plane of Justice trials just to get flagged for the next level. I got so fed up failing by a few seconds in some of those required---and instanced---trials. No KSing, no ****-blocking, nothing nasty involving other players, it was just a tough challenge that required real coordination by a team of six different players. Even then I was a skilled dual-boxer (druid and enchanter) and I had to run each of my toons thru the trials separately because the events were too demanding to box.

Personally, I don't believe once players get their flags, they're going to keep killing the quest mobs over n over just to **** block other players. If they do that, they're only going to slow down their own progression and get passed by others they're so desperately trying to keep ahead of. Or if they do such shenanigans then that's the time to petition and see if DBG can be encouraged to step in and stop such obvious in-game harassment. Yeah, I know, from what I hear, DBG customer service and GM services aren't anything like in the good ole days of Sony-EQ at their peak, but surely if a "storm of trains, KSing and general chaos" overwhelms the Plane of Storms they'll have to get off their keisters and do something.

In the interim, I suggest a bit less whinery and more effortery (if that's a word, lol.)

It comes down to Phinigel server has been "anyone can try everything" thus far. This doesn't mean your guild is capable of taking down Vex Thal (for example) but if you want to do the work to get the key to get in there, you can.

What is causing the angst about PoP (PoS & PoJ) in particular is that availability of the content, not that difficulty is going to create a bottleneck. The server is not racing to unlock.10+ guilds fully capable of starting PoP progression are going to have to deal with this bringing out the worst behavior in several other guilds and possibly themselves. People want to test themselves in the harder content in era... not "DPS race" over the bottom tier junk of the expansion.

For what Phinny has been, this is completely unnecessary and contrary to the "sell" of the server. Why risk losing paid accounts over this? PoP progression has been a traditionally breaking point of many guilds in EQ across various servers at various times. This is when guilds implode, half-progressed guilds lose officers to more elite guilds and all that. PoP is many people's high point of raiding as well... but there is a reason LoY and LDoN tried so hard to be something for the non-elite crowd back in the day. There presently are a lot of non-elite players paying to play on Phinny. Many of them won't be impacted directly by this... but the drama can be a poison to the server, and some of the best casual guilds have raiding cores that this could really deflate.

Frankly, make the PoS and PoJ encounters way harder... but readily available. They could retune everything PoP earlier for raid content to "hard mode" and that could be a healthy progression move. More challenge can be good.

Note that I play on Phinny and have no intentions of raiding any of PoP in era. I'm just trying to see a bigger picture here. If it isn't adjusted, smart guilds that don't want the drama/hassle should just stay out of PoP for a few weeks.

Maintain ruleset consitancy. Hardcore servers are contested. Casual are instanced. Nothing *isses people off more than camping out with one set of rules and logging in to another.
