While working my Shaman's alchemy skill I got to the Suspension of Slime VII bit where you create vials that - according to what is says on the label - are a sort of ersatz Snare.

Great for all those classes that have no Snare ability and have to deal with the wonderful tendency of some mobs to run away when they are losing.

The trouble is I can't figure out how they work. I tried googling, searching here and on Daybreak and I get advice like "Just put them in your Ammo slot with one in Range and use ranged attack. Well that just got me a red message saying "Not a valid ranged weapon".

I've tried it on a Mage and a Paladin with the same result. There were people saying it had worked on their Mage - more specifically moaning about how badly it worked but it must have worked for them to whine about it. The Paladin had 10 in Throwing (didn't think to check the Mage)

Has this changed? Or am I just missing something very obvious?

Yes that thread from 2005 is exactly the sort of thing I found.
"Put one in range and the rest in Ammo and use Ranged attack"

I tried that. I don't get a too close or out of range message I get "not a valid ranged weapon".

Has anyone done this recently?

Does the potion vial actually say what slots it can go into? Is it possible it's some kind of clickable thing that creates what you throw? Are you double checking that you have one in the actual ranged slot?

Works just fine for me on my 67 shaman

Are you sure you don't have different suspension types in the ammo and range slots?
Never mind. Just tried with one type in ammo and the other in range and it threw the range slot one.

Works with regular range attack button and with auto-fire.

You are trying to throw Basic Suspension of Slime VII...right?

Well I owe the forum an apology for not learning to read Smiley: frown

After the reassurance that it worked on a 67 Shaman I tried on my 44 Shaman. Presto It Worked!!

Wondering if somehow it was shaman only despite no such warning I tried it on the 45 Beastlord. It worked again.

So it isn't shaman only, hmmm. I went back to the 21 Paladin and re-equipped the potion.
Thats when I noticed the faint yellow background.

The potion requires level 35.

Sorry for wasting everyone's time.

btw also worked for 42 Monk.

Actually, no. The two characters I pretty much play exclusively are a paladin and a wizard. Not much need or benefit to throwing stuff on either char. And certainly not potions. I did spend the time getting the summoned hammer item for my paladin just so I could get the combat skill achievements though, so it's not like I don't know how to throw stuff. It's just not something I do for any sort of combat benefit.

But my comment wasn't really about whether I'd used thrown potions or not. I was just tossing out the possibility that what he had in his hand was some kind of clickable thing that opens up to a stack of potions or something. Which is totally a thing that could be possible. The aforementioned item (although it's a bracer I think?) is used to summon a stack of hammers which you equip and throw. I figured this might be something similar and he was using it wrong or something.
