Here's another kind of EQ "mystery" which I've experienced a lot over the many years and I wonder if others have as well.
Playing a druid I do get random tells looking for buffs, punts and ports. I'm also afk a lot since I tend to leave my toons logged in even when I'm working on other computers doing non-game stuff (like REAL work.) So I'll get a tell asking for a port or a buff and I won't even notice it for a few minutes when I happen to check the game screen. I do have an audio prompt for "tells you" but I don't always hear it. I am generous with ports and buffs so I will usually respond positively. But the mystery is that a majority of the time THE PLAYER IS NO LONGER ON-LINE. This happens far more often than you would think and it happens a fair amount even when it's only been a few minutes since I got the tell.
It seems like these players log in, try to get a buff or a port, and if they fail, they just log out. I used to notice this when people would announce in chat they were LFG. Back then I played more in real groups so sometimes I'd send a tell to people I noticed by scrolling back in chat had been asking for a group. A surprising % of the time the same people would have logged out, presumably frustrated after only a few minutes LFG. Now it's so hard to get a PU group that you don't see this phenomenon so much, but it's been replaced by players frustrated over not getting buffs or ports logging off suddenly.
I also see it when players are doing "WTS"'s, and I notice it belatedly and they're offering an item I'd consider buying. By the time I send them a bid, they've logged off. Why in heck would you announce WTS and then log right off?
More EQ "Mysteries", I guess.
