Gear that talksFollow

There was recently a thread on the DBG veterans forums titled "What's a feature you miss" and talking gear came up. I have been using a talking shield on my necro for a while and this made me wonder how many pieces of gear are out there that talk?

My shield is Nogglegrop Fendlebar the Unwilling.

I have also been using another evolving item called the Blade of the Once Bitten - but I don't remember if it ever talked. I used an audio trigger to notice when the shield talked to me but didn't set one up for the sword. Are talking items a subset of evolving items or is that completely unrelated?

There's one more piece in that set - talking leather breeches. I think it drops off the named clockwork spider in the cul-de-sac next to the ledge.

Fancy Leather Pantaloons.

Thanks for the link Trappin. I'm camping it and it's clearly the rare drop.

Accursed Mask of Reptilian Clarity *Sentient
Ancient Werewolf Skull *Sentient
Glume'Inas the Stinking *Sentient

Shield of Smoke

Wrap of Three Blessings

Blade of the Night Sky

Cloak of the Spirit Tracker

Twisted Shank

Skymaul, Ceremonial Hammer *Sentient

Earring of Resistance

Symbiotic Larva

Accursed Grin of Malevolence

Wretched Skull Ring

Cloak of the Spirit Tracker

Wegar's Lantern of Sidewise Fearing

Eldritch Ring of Prismatic Refraction

The Shattered Blade

Very Small Stone Tear

Remnant of Grokui's Claw

Please feel free to add on if you know of any more!

Based on the item numbers... looks like this was a one expansion feature (Dragons of Norrath) that they tossed a few new items on circa Secrets of Faydwer and Veil of Alaris respectively.

I was headshotting thralls near the zone line to Undershore when the sword dropped - I dispatched hundreds and hundreds of them to get that silly sword. I put it on an old L55 ranger alt with max 2h slash skill. It took ages to evolve the sword to the 2nd stage.

Now that you mention that... I remember my brother hunting a couple of these in Depths of Darkhollow zones. Maybe the links I looked up were assigned the wrong era?

On kill #88, which was the 9th spawn of Scuttlebucket I finally got the pants. First thing they said was "Dear me. We have GOT to do something about your clothing. Do you realize that I hardly match the rest of your unsightly garb?"

On to the Oizen ring...

I think it's all Darkhollow stuff. I love the DoD theme - and spent a fair amount of time there, but don't recall specifics. An awesome ranger-only clicky drops in Undershore(?,) but i forget what it does. It's a tough series of zones with lots of cross traffic / roaming mobs with tricky pulling and odd pathing.

I wanted this but cold never quite turn the corner on Zoriles the Champion while boxing a L65 shaman + L62(?) ranger

I stopped playing by the time DoD launched so I never saw this stuff at the appropriate time. The little I had seen in these zones hadn't impressed me but now that I've spent days here and gotten familiar with a number of these zones I'm impressed. This was a real / full expansion with lots of real zones, lots of quests and instanced zones, and nifty new mechanics and game elements. I like the zone and mob art / models too.

I'm currently evolving Oizyn, Nogglegrop, Black Leather Pantaloons, and Skymaul on my necro and between the 4 of them they keep up more chatter than a real group of people. Skymaul is clearly a set piece with the shield Nogglegrop. Both have moving gears and the same style. It's a shame the pieces only speak generically and not to each other though. It would be pretty funny to have the pants complain to the shield when they get spattered with blood.

Talking and evolving items was a neato idea, I guess. Honestly though, the biggest problem with the idea was that it took so long for the gear to level up, that it was worthless to bother with once it was no longer current content (and frankly questionable even when it was). If they'd made the gear actually continue to level up as you did, that would have been a much better approach. Of course, I can see why they didn't do that though. They need people to replace/upgrade their gear every expansion, otherwise no one will bother with the content. So a neat idea, but one that couldn't survive for long, almost by design.

I never really liked the DoD expansion anyway. It wasn't terrible. And to be fair, it did have some interesting quests. I just really hated the geometry of the zones themselves. They looked really cool (which was an incredibly nice change from the previous several expansions where it felt like I was adventuring at the local public middle school), but pathing sucked really really bad. Visibility was bad. Finding routes just to travel through a zone without getting aggro was bad. Line of sight for spell casting was bad. Just far too many negatives, which outweighed the nice looks IMO.
