I'm curious about what other players have thought about Collectibles.

Now this kind of thing is right up my alley since I've always been a collector. (My wife would say hoarder, but she's the other extreme. She throws away everything including holiday cards one day after the holiday is over. She'd ditch the Christmas tree after dinner on the 25th if I didn't put my foot down. Proof that opposites often attract.)

Completing sets of Collectibles gets you rewards of 10-11 AA's, not to mention even better stuff for completing entire expansion's worth. Like finishing off RoF, which I just finally managed to do, earns you Sliver of Fear, which is a darn fine item even 3 xpacs later.

Don't tell DBG but I'd pursue Collectibles even if there were NO rewards. Completing sets is a fun challenge, especially with the added experiential bonuses of exploring zones I'd otherwise have no reason to visit and trying to figure out where the collectibles spawn or drop.

I'm also intrigued by the rarity aspect. The last two Collectibles I needed from all 3 expansions' worth of sets were both RoF: Pretty Flower and Crackers. Now I do believe they're both the rarest items in their sets. Every set is supposed to have a "rare", and it's SUPPOSED to be the last one on the list, which is true for these two. But I doubt these two are especially rare when considered across all Collectibles. However I have practiced the routine of checking the Bazaar on FV just about every time I log in. I have never seen Pretty Flowers and the only Crackers I ever saw has always had an ask price WAY beyond my limit.

I'm inclined to think the reason for this is that few players still play in RoF zones, and perhaps even less so in Crystal Caverns, where the flower drops, and Breeding Grounds where the crackers drop. Because I did finally acquire both of them fairly quickly once I made an intensive and devoted effort to clearing the mobs involved. My previous visits to both zones were for doing advancement missions and my focus wasn't on Collectibles. So their rarity isn't so much because they're designed to be rarer than all other Collectibles. It's just a side effect of which xpac they're from and what zones contain their carriers.

My questions for you are:

Do you actively pursue Collectibles?

If so, have you noticed any that are especially hard to find?

And do you enjoy the pursuit or do you feel like a laboratory animal "enticed" into this activity despite your reluctance?!

Actively - not so much. Have some from spending time in some RoF and CotF zones, but it's purely a back-burner activity for now. Later this year, once I've completed progression in HoT and VoA, I'll be in those zones much more, so then I'll pay more attention to it.

I do have one pet peeve to add (and another comparison to EQ2, where they did it right). When I look for collectibles on the broker in EQ2, the names of the ones I have are dimmer text, and the names of the ones I don't have are in bold text. And then, on top of that, they added a filter to just show ones you haven't collected yet.

On the EQ bazaar, there are many cheap collectibles available, but I'm not gonna waste time figuring out which ones I need. It's a shame, there's probably thousands of plat I'd spend in the bazaar, otherwise.

Totally agree. The biggest pita is trying to figure out if you already have the item in question. You have to check the lore tab of the item, and the go the achievements, expand the expansion it comes in, then go to collectibles, then scroll down what may be a *very* long list looking for the set name (which is generally not in alphabetical order, but in order by zone, but may be tacked on later if collection sets were added later), then open up the set, and then look at the list. And sometimes, the UI is dorked on that, and it doesn't show the box checked, but just the number on the right instead.

Our guild tends to drop these things into the guild bank all the time. I've found it's faster to just grab the stack, click on it to see if you have it, then drop it back in than take the time to actually see if you have it. Which is still a ton of wasted time. Not like I can remember all the names of different things I have or haven't collected, across multiple characters. It would be amazing if they could have the icon, name, or whatever glow or otherwise indicate that this is something you haven't yet collected. Would save a massive amount of time.

I agree as well. What I did was convert the list of Collectibles from here, Collectibles, into an Excel spreadsheet, sort them alphabetically, add a column to indicate how many I had, and then printed it out. Eventually I added fields for expansion name and achievement name. Sure, it takes some time but ultimately I think it saved me a lot of time once I started making good use of it. There are quite a few players seriously pursuing gathering all Collectibles so having some available for trade helps, particularly with the sets that require slaughtering mobs inside an HA, or even the ground spawns that come from HA's. It can be very tiresome to do the same HA over and over, at least until you get to the part where Collectibles spawn, and then have to scour the zone, avoiding mob agro, hoping to locate that last one you need. You have to approach completing sets as a fun challenge or else it's no fun at all!

I'm a hoarder as well (especially with tradeskill items). As for collectibles, there are several reasons why I get them. a) the rewards, b) I'm an achievement junky, c) some of the rewards are awesome - like that aug you linked.

As an off topic, I'm such a horrible hoarder that I have alts that have their own guild, just so I can fill up the guild bank with tradeskill crap. =P
