This thread has been linked in the Forum Information and Useful Threads sticky.

From a Progression perspective you have a couple of reasons to do a quest (aside from the fun/challenge): faction, coin, gear and/or experience. Most quests have been adjusted down over the years to not give much experience.

Good Experience: NOTE: Early in the Phinigel server era they have nerfed quest XP massively (90% off by some reports)... unclear if this nerf was to all servers or just progression servers. This means there may not really be any more "good experience" quests on progression...

Crushbone Belts (good XP well into teen levels, gives patchwork armor)

Crushbone Shoulder Pads (better XP than Crushbone belts)

Red Wine in Neriak (decent XP at level 5 --note a week later from when I last did it we are hearing it has been nerfed, so maybe just a faction quest now)

Fire Beetle Eyes in East Freeport (note same NPC does bone chips and spiderling silk which are both less XP)

Fire Beetle Eyes in Neriak (need faction with The Dead to do this, decent XP at 5)

Deathfist Slashed evil and Deathfist Slashed Good (nice that you can hand in singles)

Moonstones (Captain Tillin has a few quests, Moonstones involves gnoll teeth)

Gear and/or starter coin:

Bone chips in Kaladim (if you can't wear the gear, there is a merchant right by the quest NPC.)

Crush the Undead in South Qeynos (used to be good XP up to level 7? needs confirmed)

Spiderling Silks in GFay (gives newbie bards a drum, may be good XP?)

Red V Clockwork Also known as "Bullsmasher quest" in some sources (gives a variety of awards, sounds quite involved, need verification of factions and XP)

Lizard Tails in Ogguk (gives rawhide armor)

Going Postal (Kelethin to Freeport) is one example. Doing a search here of "going postal" should generate this list of 18 quests.

Scarab Breastplate ; Scarab Boots ; Scarab Helm (gives +to many Dwarve factions as well)

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=1026" rel="external nofollow" title="https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=1026">Gnoll Fur is a pretty easy quest out of Halas that rewards a magic dagger (https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=4361" rel="external nofollow" title="https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=4361">Fang of the Wolf). (It isn't great, but it's something if your race/class combo can wield it.)

Faction:

Batwings in Felwithe (need to be liked by high elf mage guild... I got my high elf cleric to level 3 with this quest, but I handed in nearly 200 bat wings to do so. My wood elf ranger didn't have the base faction to do the quest).

Bandages in Misty Thicket (may give XP at very low levels --needs confirmed, does build most Rivervale factions)

orc scalps in High Pass (captain Ashlan is up top on the bridge/ridge over the path in the south of Highpass, this quest may be good XP at low level but is not by level 10. It does give decent gold for the level)

Crushbone belts are good XP thru as high as 20, especially where at higher levels, they're easy to pharm.

Lego pads even better.

At 15 I got 2% XP from belts and 5% from each pad. I'm told XP-enhancement buffs (like double XP weekend) don't affect this kind of XP so there ya go, 2% XP from turning in one belt, acquired from a mob that paid XP when it died, that isn't bad at all.

On TLP servers belts and pads are far and away the best possible quest for XP. This explains why on Phinigel there are players all the time offering as high as 4pp for belts and 7pp for pads.

Orc scalps quest in High Hold Keep is worthless for XP, it's only good for faction. I turned in 80 at level 15 and got 1% XP. TOTAL

I've always considered it ironic that for a game called EVER QUEST quests themselves are not that important a part of the original game and for early leveling. When I first played back in 1999-2000 the only "quest" I ever did thru my first 30 or so levels were CB belts and pads and these aren't even really "quests" since you don't have to be assigned the quest before pursuing its required steps. Contrast with World of Warcraft where you can rise thru early levels almost exclusively doing various quests. They do get tedious, however, usually amounting to the same template repeated over and over.

It's apparent (after reading a lot of old quest entries here of late doing updates) that many of the original era quests have been heavily reduced in respects to the XP given.

EQ gets a pass in that the task/quest system came along several years into it existing, and they didn't put the old quests into the system. We still have unsolved quests from this older era (no doubt some of which are broken).

What is sad, is that "the vision" couldn't be looked at to make the actual difficult quests give decent XP for the intended level, especially if the reward is not something worth it unto itself. Rivervale quests, for example, nearly all used to give good XP past level 10 --now few of them give good XP past level 4. Now that faction numbers are revealed, it is amazing how little faction hits most quests are as well. That's another spot some quests could be boosted to make them more worthwhile (instead of big XP).

Having played WoW, my biggest issue with their quest system is the repeated templates and the fact that you replace the quest reward (say gloves) with a new quest reward (gloves again) a few stages later in the linear quest chains.

I ripped the post and pasted it to reddit and linked back to this thread. I'll edit the reddit post if you object to my naked thievery.

It's all good, thanks. There's a few already in the reddit that probably should go on our list here.

I would add in the bard quests from Freeport, Butcherblock docks, and Kaladim to Kelethin. That yields a good amount of XP but also 2.1 platinum (and the quest going back from Kelethin to Freeport is another 1+ platinum). So for about 30 minutes run time there and back, you get probably level 2 and enough platinum to get a couple bags and all your spells for the first few levels.

In the () for Crushbone belts, you can note that you get some patchwork armor. That's really helpful.

Tried to do the bat wing quest earlier today and Niola Impholder is nowhere to be found on Lockjaw. In fact, several npc's seem to be missing.

Rogue should get the mask of deception from LGuk, it's not a quest, but a rite of passage. Check the old website Safehouse on how to do it at level 5.

Low level rogue may begin the Redemption quest. Begin collecting the skins and cask in Blackburrow - pronto! Grab the oblong bottle in OOT and collect the ales and wines. Nab the bottle of blood off a a hemo enologist corpse at MM castle, then get the purse in SOLB(?) Rogue need the BR to complete the epic (feather quest was added later*** maybe Velious expansion?)

Just wanted to add the scarab BP and Helm in Kaladim are good armor quests for plate too! The pristine carapaces drop like candy in UNREST - if you ask nicely people will give it to you free because the the weight is not worth 7g. The helm requires two pristine carapaces plus 5 gp and you get them back with helm. Use one to get the bp for 23 gp. You can't repeat them, but selling back to the vendor is actually profitable.

Missing Gnoll Fangs quest in Qeynos, Captain Tillin in the warrior guild.

[–]Georgraphy
Red Wine quest is no longer good for experience at all. Bought up tons of it for an Ogre Shaman, turned in 80 at level 1..1%, if that. Still amazing for Neriak merchant and guard faction though. Word of warning watch out for a patrolling guard in Third Gate who is on The Dead faction. 1 shot my poor Ogre :(

If you're a gnome, I recommend the Bull Smasher quest in Ak'Anon

That's really odd. I did it about 2 weeks ago on Lockjaw. Have they removed the NPC from the mage guild (that's a fun place to figure out how to get into if you have never been there before... all the other guilds your swim and run in to, mage guild you teleport up to via the bridge/tower structure).

I agree. I think I would call that a "mid-level" classic quest (in era) so I made a new thread here

Added notes, thanks. Bull Smasher and Missing Gnoll Fangs aren't the names of the quests here so I put them up under their respective Zam names.

I'll go back later to check again. When you go up the ramp, before going to the teleport area, there were no npc's at all when I was there.

Went back today, and she is there.

I'd recommend the Bull Smasher (Red V) quest for any small race of the correct classes. While not magic, the very fast delay on that weapon makes it one of the better one handers you can own in the pre-Kunark game. Heck. I was still using it on hate/fear raids back in the day for this very reason (swapping it out with a bigger/slower magic weapon if needed). Of course, back then I think I was still wearing my DRT and wielding my SBS in off hand at the time too (resist gear ftw!).

Oh. I'm lazy with the quest links, but another thing to note in general is that there are a number of old quests that give you a container to put stuff in. So if you're looking for free bag space, these can be handy until you have enough plat to buy better.

If your enchanter on progression server the Stein of Mogguk (probably spelled it wrong) is a very profitable quest to do. As a lowbie you can farm the honeycombs for money as there are always enchanters looking to buy them in misty thicket for part of said quest.

Oh. And I think I mentioned this the last time the subject came up (and who knows how long ago that was?), but I always had much much better luck getting honeycombs in Kith than in Misty. I actually created a chanter alt back in they day almost solely for doing this quest for cash. It was one of the few classes that could actually make significant money pretty easily (early jewelry stuff isn't half bad to do either). Suppose that depends on the market for such stuff, but I'd assume there would be at least some market.

Hardest part of this quest is catching Dyllin Starsine up - or knowing his spawn timer. People camped this guy 24/7 when Fippy went live - I recall one group of very aggressive people in one guild farming/cockblocking the spawn - they parked a whole crew of low level guild caster-alts there and owned the spawn timer .. I finally ganked Dyllin... moments before one of them logged in Smiley: cool

Turn in quests have been nerfed on progression servers. They still give coin and items but almost no XP like they used to. Too many people PL'ing themselves with turn in quests instead of grouping. Getting to level 10 is a nightmare now.

I haven't summoned the courage or cash to try a progression server yet.

However back in the day you could turn in lightstones to an NPC in North Karana for decent XP.
I used to spend a while on the isle between Qeynos and Erudin where the place is overrun with wisps. Snare is kind of essential though.
