You can add comment lines to macros like this:

/gsay INC %T ----I'm Telling Group Mob is Incoming
/alt act 544 ----Activating Some Useful AA
/cast 1 ----Casting Debuff Spell
/cast 2 ----Casting Big Nuke
/cast 3 ----Casting Root

Don't need more than one blank space before the comment. You can't see extra spaces here but in my macros I put a bunch of spaces so the comments appear well to the right of the commands, for maximum readability. I guess the command processor ignores any text after a complete command sequence has been processed.

I'm embarrassed somewhat to admit that in all the years I played this game I didn't know this. It's REALLY useful for AA abilities since who can remember what talent these code numbers reference.

Note that these comment lines are strictly for editing purposes. They don't get issued as say commands so nobody else sees them.

I did not know that.

Forgive the retentiveness in this next comment, but don't forget your pauses of course, or else your AA, and 3 spells will try to cast simultaneously and the gsay may interrupt all of that if you get some server latency.

True dat. But it was just an example and it's one of the type involving spells with long recast times, and different timers, so all you care about is every time you hit the button at least ONE of them casts. You're right, though as well, in THIS example, only the groupsay command would be issued if I was hitting this hot button very rapidly.

On the other hand, I am truly astonished that evidently almost nobody I've asked in game, such as guildies, knew about these comment lines...

Search old threads here about "foraging macros" (may have to try other wordings) and you'll get some interesting tidbits like this.

I do see the "new" piece in what you are saying which is adding a comment so you know what the macro line is about, which with AA abilities would be helpful for sure.

Some tradeskillers and users of tedious AA like flesh to bone used to play around with it as well (since casting it put the meat on your cursor it was nice to make it autoinventory). In that case I just named the macro fleshbone so I wouldn't forget what it was doing, but that's not a combat situation that matters.

Some enchanters played with it a lot, such as setting up
/cast 1 (tash)
/g tashing %t he is going to hate me
/pause 3
/cast 2 (mez)

or some such. My brother and I fooled with mez macros that recasted in case of fizzle/resist. I used a /g mezzing %t line in my mez macros of course, sometimes using a line to put it in /say as well.

I remember a player that had set up all his cast/ability macros to emote in the style of Final Fantasy tactics...

I sure wish they'd permit more lines in a macro. It would be nice to be able to announce in group what a macro is doing but usually I can't afford a line for a /gsay statement particularly with complex actions like from an enchanter, where every line is at a premium. Enchanters get so many different types of mez spells, rune spells, AA mezs, AA runes, that I'd rather devote all 5 lines to using as many of those as possible.

Last time I played with it my enchanter was level 65 so I have no doubt AA/ability/spell inflate has made it silly. At 65 most of my hotbar was macros that combined a few things and told the group what I was doing.
