It was a bit annoying at first (and definitely has some bugs related to folks in group leaving/joining/zoning/etc). Having a box pop up on your screen in the middle of a fight can be a hassle. But once I got used to it, I found I really really really like it. It massively speeds up killing when soloing IMO. With my paladin, my common soloing tactic is to round up a batch of lt blue mobs (4-8 typically) and kill them, then run to the next batch and repeat. Stopping to loot all the bodies got to be a significant slowdown. And I've always been annoyed at the whole "can't loot from this angle. Nope, not that one either.". Nocs are the freaking worst. You can only loot them by pointing yourself at an angle with their feet towards you and their head away from you. So I found myself constantly having to move around in circles just to loot a freaking mob. Now, box pops up. I can start killing the next mob and click click click the items in the loot box in between other combat activities. Took a little bit to get used to, but if you're fighting the same mobs over and over, and know which items to loot and which not, it's really fast and convenient.
Another thing I really like is that it allows for remote looting. With my wizard, it's not uncommon for me to kill a mob that still over there. So I have to run over to it and loot it. And sometimes, it's over there where other mobs may roam by, while I'm over here where it's safe. Being able to loot out of the box rather than have to move to the mob to loot is great. Also, if I'm roaming around killing stuff (like doing the oh so annoying oceangreen dailies), I can click invis the second the fight ends and start moving and loot while looking for the next rat or bat or whatever it is I'm looking for. Serious time saver. There's a spot I camp where there's a bunch of static mobs that spawn more or less in a circle around an area. Before, I'd move to one mob, root/nuke it, then have to run up to it to loot, and then run back away and to the side to position for the next kill. Now, I just loot out of the box while positioning for the next kill. It's awesome!
In groups, it has some advantages as well (lots of them). One person can be master looter and basically divvy up loot as it falls. Used to be, you'd have someone looting, and then have to randomly hand folks stuff. This is much easier. No moving around required. Looter can hang out wherever he/she needs to be for fighting while doing the same thing they'd have done previously. For HAs, or other tasks with specific drops involved, they can make sure the right person gets the needed drops for each task, and it's a lot easier to avoid missing drops because a mobs corpse is hidden, or in water, or fell in a well or something. The downside, is that it can get buggy. I once went off to complete some dailies after doing some guild group stuff, and found myself unable to loot anything despite being along in the zone. Had to leave the group to loot, and still couldn't loot the stuff that was in the loot box, despite being listed as master looter. That was like the first day or two of the system being in place though, and I think they've fixed most of the more obvious bugs. A few days later, I did something similar, only this time I actually needed to stay in group (was finishing up some DoN progression tasks), and looting worked just fine.
Again, it takes a bit to get used to, but IMO is a serious improvement over the old loot system. And, as several people have pointed out, if you really don't like it, you can disable it. Worst case is you're in a group with others who are using it. And that just means you don't have to hassle with it yourself. Just click "loot all" in your own window at the top when the master looter hands you stuff, and you're good to go.
