she is running EverQuest on an AMD Athlon 64 bit with Windows XP and 4 gigs of ram. she says she is fine with her current setup. I am helping her out because she's on disability and really cannot afford a new system. I know about seven years ago that was a great system. my question is a new system really necessary not that I don't want to do it for my friend. I don't want to go out and spend $1000 on a system and she really doesn't see any benefit of EQ on it because that's mainly what she plays 99.9% the time. I know that loading of zones will be quicker. she does not box she cannot stand boxing, I guess my real question is what are the benefits of a new computer while playing Everquest.

EQ hasnt benefited from an upgrade in PC technology in a while(since i think Luclin). I used to 2 box on a rig that I got in 04, it also ran WoW(for many years) and LoTRO without any problems. I actually just got rid of that rig back in 2011. I used to run EQ on an old gateway laptop back in 2000 when i first started playing, it was when Luclin came out that my laptop wasnt able to handle EQ anymore from the graphics upgrade. so in short you probably dont need to spend any money on a new rig for your friend. Or if you do you can buy a decent rig for about 500.

Considering EQ requires an out-of-date edition of Microsoft's Direct-X Driver,, clearly the game doesn't require anything close to cutting-edge computer technology, unless you want to box a full group's worth of instances on one desktop.

But... JEEZ, do buy her an upgrade to Windows XP! I wouldn't tolerate my worst enemy using that O/S anymore. Well, maybe my worst enemy, since it's sure to do him harm someday, but my "ordinary" enemies.... I'd advise them to upgrade! Smiley: lol

Zoning actually probably won't be quicker. Alot of that is server side if im not mistaken. Even if she did box it sounds like that system should be more than enough to run EQ especially if she doesn't box. If Everquest is the only thing your worried about I wouldn't change a thing. If its not broke don't fix it.

EDIT

One thing that might benefit her would be a larger monitor. I upgraded my 19 inch monitor to a 24 inch and it made settings up my UI soo much roomier on EQ. With all the hotbars, chat windows, etc a large monitor helps alot.
