A happy story:

I had a minor in game thing to due with guild rankings to sort out.

GM Accapelo fixed this for me less than a day after my petition, and the email from him/her was personalized so I didn't feel serviced by robots.

I like GM Accapelo. One of my augs accidentally disappeared on me, and I petitioned. 30 minutes later, Accapelo comes in and hands it to me. I was so happy and excited that I couldn't stop thanking him/her. :)

My thanks goes to GM Dunbar.

I had a minor bugs - once a quest was bugged and some other time Franklin Teek refused to give me a task, hehee ;) BTW, if someone has troubles communicating with this guy, remove your buffs such as levitation.

And once I had a major issue - after returning this spring I delited by accident (don't askSmiley: lol) my char on Silver Account and lost my free mount, bags etc. I got all the items back.

Every time I got very nice and personalized answers from GM Dunbar in couple of hours (it was night in US when I sent my petition).
I think maybe it's a rule that GM's describe what happened and what they did to solve the problem. Anyway SOE's customer service is really high level Smiley: nod I'd like to meet them IG.

Remember the old times when GM's walked in Norrath? Do they still do that?
Last time I saw one was in 2012, when I returned for a month. I was all alone in Old Sebilis with my shammy and there he was - a male human ranger(?) GM (don't remember he's name) just stopped by to ask how I am doing. We had a very nice chat Smiley: smile

GM stills walk the trails of Norrath, but not so common today.

Yeah, they are usually friendly, giving out milk and cookies and asking how you're doing, typically in quasi-RP phraseology. But I have to admit it, every time I've randomly run into a GM it feels like bumping into a cop IRL. Even if in both cases, "I ain't doin' nothin', Officer!"

The first year I was playing, 1999 or 2000, I was soloing at the Chessboard in Butcherblock Mountains with my little warrior. In those days it was easy to form a group at a camp like that but this time I was alone. I turn from killing a skell and was shocked to see a dark elf standing there staring at me intently. Didn't "say" a word, just those eyes fixed on me. At that point I don't think I had even SEEN a dark elf except perhaps Ambasaddor D'Vinn in Crushbone and we all know how welcome that NPC was as a random encounter! Back then I didn't know what a GM was so I had no idea why he was standing there staring. Then he "vanished", probably gating away.

I only found out much later when I recognized his name posted somewhere as a GM.

A Close Encounter of the Creepy Kind...

My most recent experience happened in the tutorial. Two guides, not GM's, dropped by and chatted for almost 20 minutes. They were great and role played throughout the conversation. I have seen GM's and Guides before, but they never interacted on a personal basis unless it was as a response to a petition to correct something. It was very refreshing to chat about past experiences in EQ.

Alot of times during holidays guides role play NPCs. If their dialog wasn't so responsive you'd just think they were a well written npc dialog. I talked to a brewer in CR, several frostfalls ago for quite a while. He started off just spouting stuff like the random verbage from any npc, but I recognized it wasn't the same old stuff the normal npcs say, so thought it was a special holiday npc. Took a little more than a hail and one response to get it was a real person.

It was very fun, and brought back memories of the old days when alot of people role played to some degree.

One Christmas season, a GM was in PoK recruiting players for a contest that involved being shrouded to level 5 and then running a race. What the heck I had time to kill so I volunteered. He ported me to Lavastorm where I found there was one other contestant... so far. Both of us were shrouded down to level 5. I forget the race/class of the shroud but it had no stealth or innate invis ability. He tells us wait a bit while he recruits more contestants.

Now this is Lavastorm where the average mob is 11-20s. The race was to run across the whole zone to some goal on the other side. What are the odds that any un-invisd level 5 is going to make it thru this crowded zone of red mobs? Maybe possible using zone walls but if memory serves the target was inside the zone so still would be close to impossible.

To make it worse, he has us waiting at a spot where lava crawlers pass by (fire spiders) and he didn't invis us. Sure enough, we both get killed. He does rez us. We get killed again. (Still no invis.) This happens a third time while he's still trying to recruit more. Now I'm pretty sure (but not absolutely) that these deaths won't affect my main but we all know how it sucks to be killed in-game even if you're getting rezd by a GM. Plus with only two people in this coming race I'm thinking this is going nowhere fast especially as we'll probably both die within 10 feet of the starting line.

Not well-planned, not well-thought-out, nice try but I was disappointed.

I also remember one time, again years ago, when the GMs amused themselves as high level dark elf mobs going around instantly killing players in Greater Faydark. This was back when GFay was always PACKED and there were dozens of dead players on the ground. The dark elves would run at bard speed, come up to a player, kinda glare at him (like my incident at the Chessboard) and then presumably harm-touch or just use a "GM death grip." I never got the point of this "event." Maybe if they had controlled a swarm of level-appropriate dark elves raiding GFay, and been able to be harmed and killed themselves, this would have been fun. Being randomly assassinated by super-powered evil NPCs... I don't think that made anybody's day.

Don't get me wrong, GMs do help players out and many are very friendly and solicitous. Again years ago I ported with my druid into Butcherblock and instantly died to the "under the world" bug. You don't see that much now but back then it was possible to fall under the geometry and die in a place that was totally inaccessible---in this zone probably deep inside some defunct dwarf mine! After running around frantically and being unable to locate my corpse, I petitioned. Within minutes a GM appeared, summoned my corpse, rezzed me, buffed me up and apologized for the problem. Good service there!

I was in the basement of Kurn's tower a few years back and ran into a named mushroom. Intrigued, I tried many and various hails, question etc. Nothing.

I left the zone and after selling all my loot it occurred to me that "Oh, man; that was an GM!! I hurried back to the basement but, alas, the 'Shroom was gone.Smiley: frown

About three years ago I was in Gloomingdeep with - I think - a cleric (one of my many Taterkuks - Smiley: smile). I had finished every quest in there so I was running about buffing folk for a couple hours, healing and generally just helping others finish their quests. Right before I zoned I noticed a buff that had no business being on my buff bar. It was Voice of Intuition Rk II if I recall correctly. I did a /who and sent a tell to the buffer who said something like "you're welcome; keep it up" and then promptly logged. I can only assume it was a GM rewarding me for "friendly play".

Then there was the time when in the course of 12 hours I accidentally destroyed my Whistling Fist - TWICE. Smiley: oyveyBoth times I had them back within a few hours. So, yeah, I banked the Fists.
